O RLY owl is the greatest. However, they're starting to sell O RLY/YA RLY owl t-shirts, so the fad is rapidly getting killed by its own over-use.

I haven't seen it anywhere other than 4chan and a few unpopular ytmnds.
We're safe for now from Kuma's wrath.
I see it in the form of LJ icons a lot. One's that shake and say "YOU GONNA GET RAPED" with the bear. But that's really it, so I guess it's not everywhere. Yet.

The owls, however, are simple and 'clean' humour - all that's required is knowledge of internet shorthand, and an appreciation for anthropomorphic humour.

It's not internet shorthand, it's a 4chan fad, nobody says "O RLY" when they would normally write "Oh really?" it's meant to mean "Look at what you posted, try applying it to yourself first". Of course it kinda lost that when the internet raped it like it does to everything else, just look at l33t.

EDIT: I also find this degrading to the wise reputation of the owl. This makes me a very, very sad chocobo. :( Owls are one of my favourite birds, easily, and that's largely because of the "old wise owl" reputation they had prior to this pathetic blaspheme.

I wasn't aware of these crazy owl things until a few months ago when I started frequenting some Soul Calibur forums. For those of you you don't know, one of the main characters of Soul Calibur III has an owl head that looks vaguely similar to that O RLY? picture and, needless to say, there have been a lot of people O RLYing and YA RLYing like crazy.
Personally I never understood quite why it was funny, at least not after the first couple of times you see that picture. I think that taking it beyond just the O RLY and YA RLY pictures is really stretching a bad joke thin.

The O RLY owl was initially pretty funny when used in the appropriate situation (or possibly inappropriate situation, depending how you look at it). However, thanks to Fool's Gold adding all of the owls as smilies and the FG posters abusing them to death, I've grown to hate them.

No, not really. Fool's Gold does have a lot of things that people eventually realise are not funny, but once you come down to it, they weren't funny in the first place. It just took a flood of the images before some of you realised it. All you people do is slap some internet shorthand onto a random image and suddenly it's supposed to be funny. It's not. It's really not. Random? Sure. Funny? No. It's not.

Stop saying "you" like everyone is involved in this, I find people's reaction and annoyance at it funnier than the concept itself.
I generally keep stuff like that for when it's appropriate, ironic, or both.

A lot of people on the internet misspell on purpose. When you look down to it, people who type correctly are in the minority of the people who use the internet on a daily basis. Especially when it comes to making these images, that are often used in "flames." However, I will not condone starting one in this thread, but if it comes to one, even when images are used, I will close this thread myself.
I only started this thread to see the reaction of the members here of the O RLY owl fad in genera, and see if I can get some discussion about the owl fad and other internet fads in generall. It started off positively, but I'm not sure if it's starting to slide. However, it sure looks like it.

I don't really look at O RLY as completely random. What makes it funny to me (or what made it funny for awhile) is that the owl's wide-eyed expression really makes it seem like he is thinking "OH REALLY?" in a surprised manner. I agree that most of the other owls are completely unfunny because the caption doesn't match the facial expression.
And that "pwned" thing had me laughing for a good 15 seconds, I'm ashamed to say.

I'm just not sure why they would be saying o rly, which is something I've come to associate with vc. I'm sure if I read the thread thoroughly proto and lindy would have explained it perfectly though xD

The horned owl is replying, 'ya rly' because he's serious, and grumpy about being disbelieved. The other images are just a variation on this general theme, such as the shocked-looking 'no wai!!!' bird. But the 'o rly'/'ya rly' pair are the originals. Especially the 'o rly' one.

And these things are just never funny. If you just use them once or twice, then they're <i>acceptable</i>, but not funny. Using them over and over again just makes them intolerable.

As the person who made that image, I can openly say that it was overused. It was also an inside joke for people who had heard a very rare comedic song and have a decent knowledge and appreciation of cricket (the sport). It wasn't meant to be funny to the masses at all, and to the masses, it would not have been funny at all. I think I might have posted it here once, using it as an inside joke towards Lenna who knew what I was talking about at the time. It's also not insulting. I find the o rly owl "correct usage" to be very impolite.
