I will always be a true fan of the final fantasy series; but i have to say final fantasy 9, was the downfall, It didnt have that can't put down the controller feeling. Well final fantasy X impressed me a bit, graphics and all, not bad plot either. Final fantasy X-2.... give me a break..Final fantasy XI was not bad either, considering it was a online game, which was a whole new feel to Final fantasy series. But unfortunatly not everyone had the right material to play, and cost wise, it wasn't exactly cheap for the low(er) income families. I hope Final Fantasy XII we bring back that old feeling to series. This is only my opinion, other people may feel different. Comments...

Someone once had a quote from Kawaii that said "Anyone who doesn't like FF9 is an idiot", or something along those lines. Not that I'm accusing you of being an idiot, I just think your point of FF9 being a bad game is invalid due to its greatness, and therefore you arguement is defunct QED.

I didn't mean it like ff9 was a bad game. I got some kicks out of it, it just didn't have that same feeling as the ffs before it.

And FFX-2 was not a very strong game (for plot). So one game you found okay, one game that was weak and one game you liked- I wouldn't call that downfall.

Actually, it felt more like playing pre-playstation era FF's than I thought any non 16-bit RPG could. And for the record, I couldn't put it down. I'm left having to agree with raskerino, one game out of the series that you didn't like, doesn't mean the series is going downhill.
I don't think the series is losing it's charm for me yet. Part of it has to do with the fact that the games are constantly evolving and trying new things in the gameplay dept, while still providing solid storylines and characters (ok, so FFX-2 was the exception to some extent, but I didn't mind most of the plot, and the gameplay was fantastic).

although i haven't played the game, FFIX looked kind of stupid. but since it IS an ff game i'll have to borrow it and at least check it out.
FFX was an awesome game. FFX-2 isn't looking good so far, i'm really only playing it because i loved the first one so much. FFXI really doesn't go with the others with the whole online deally so I'm just going to wait for XII.

Well I agree somewhat of your downfall concept. The reason I called it a downfall is because it went from great, great, great, great.....then OK, good, bad, good. It didn't keep the greatness( which some people may disagree )( which most people who have posted have )..lol.

I remember being thoroughly disappointed with 9 after having only played VIII and being major psyched for the follow up to my favourite game. It was a huge disappointment, though Vivi was kool and the chocobo system was quite good. In the end I got to the end, tried the last boss once, and didn't play again, having had as much as I could stomach. However, having said that in retrospect the game really wasn't that bad. There were some great cutscenes, some neat side quests (though some really bad ones i.e. Stellazio), and just overall, it was ok.But I felt the main thing that sucked was there was no feeling of achievement or satisfaction. Ok, I have all the cards. Soo...what? ok, I have all the stellazio. So what? Excalibur/II. So what? etc etc. After a gunblade, a lame pair of daggers or a spinny staff thingy just isn't the same.

I absolutely agree. Well for me ff9 still had that irresistible feeling but it was then that i began to feel like something was wrong and missing in the plot...too hurried, just not as "right" as it was in 6 or 7 (8 was fun but also had its "wrong" bits...that bit about the orphanage?!?!!) :mog: then i played ffx and it was absolutely stunning and with the intro and all i was all eager to play it, then as the story dragged on (like after Yuna's pilgrimage began) things started to drag. Mainly I feel like FF became a cop-out to pop, referrals to pop culture like in ff7 (where everything fit just great) and ff8 (where the setting was still interesting and fab) were in good taste, but ffx just felt weird. It didn't even (shock, horror) hold that much interest for me anymore. I didn't even bother to do sidequests. And I (and majority of gamers I know over here) personally thought ffx-2 was horrible. And it's not because I'm growing out of FF , I'm not cause i still have fun with other replayed FF games. Anywho I'm really hoping FF12 comes out great and I think it will because I still believe (mmph) and will probly always will, even if they put out 13 ffx-2s straight off, in Square!:) i really do. :choc:

Personally, I think Square is still doing just great. Okay, so not all Final Fantasies caused your boxxorz to be in a state of being roxxored. That's a subjective thing. I've found that in every gathering of FF-fans, you can name a Final Fantasy and someone will be there to say it ruled, and someone will be there to say it sucked. It's a matter of tastes. (And no, 'liking FFX-2' doesn't mean 'liking to look at the boobies')
The good thing about Square is that they try different things. If, after FF VII, they kept making the same kind of game, I VERY much doubt we'd still be playing their games. No, instead, every game they give us is something new. And since there is no such thing as 'The Perfect Game', no way to 'please everyone' there's a good odd that at some time, Square is gonna make a Final Fantasy that you don't like, or even don't like as much. That doesn't mean they're bad, because other people will have stars in their eyes and proclaim that that game is 'The Greatest Game EVA!' It just meansit might not be 'your thang'
Personally, I like VIII more than VII, and the SNES FF's? VI could grab my attention, but I had to force myself through IV and V. (And no, it's not the graphics. I LOVED Chrono Trigger) However, I'm not gonna say Square made those games 'bad'. Heck, LOTS of people swear by IV and V, and who am I to say they have no taste?
Square STILL is a company that dares to take chances, that surprises us. And THAT is what makes them such a good gamemaker, even if we don't like ALL of their games.
