Now that the characters speak and you can't enter names for the characters anymore, I feel a bit of a disconnection. Sure in FFX you can name the main character, but I always thought part of the fun of the games was instantly making your friends and family part of the game.
I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I miss being able to name the characters.

I don't know, I never saw much point in it.

I would always give my character's their original names... so it does not really affect me... it's still nice to watch my sister give retartded names to her characters (Cloud was Zitch, Tidus was Egg /xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif, Firioniel was Zookla)

I sometimes changed the gfs names but never any of the main characters unless I didn't like them. I used to call Rinoa all sorts of things for giggles. So I think it does take away some amusement now you can't name them.

my favorite naming was changing Red XIII to Nanaki, so when they get to Cosmo Canyon, Who's Nanaki, Nanaki is Nanaki

I miss it to. But it sure as heck sucks when ya name the leading lady after your gf. And then she dumps you. When you go back to that save file, it sure feels dumb getting that little suckerpunch. At least you can let her die. It's a little drastic, but it provides some slight satisfaction.

I liked renaming my characters, it added to the replayability factor of the game...

I was plain annoyed they went out of there way not to say Tidus's name. I use the original name anyway so I hope they just get rid of the naming all together.

I never change the names unless it's a second playthrough and I'm changing it to a correct name, like RedXIII to Nanaki. I hope they do away with it so the cutscenes and discussions can be better. If the name "Vann" is never said in XII I'll be pretty pissed.

I always changed Aeris to Aerith in FF7. Only change I ever made. *shrugs*

You should still be able to name the characters. But instead of making it there real name, it should just be a nick name.
But for now the only time i name a character differently is on the second time through.
Mainly so far i've only renamed Red XIII to Nanaki.

You couldn't name all the characters in ff4, 5 or 6 could you? or 8 or 9.

Umm.. Yes, you could. Except 8.
In 8, you could only rename Squall and Rinoa. Which always weirded me out. I guess couples could make themselves the main characters or something.

I thought you could only rename the hero at the start of FFV, but in FFIV you had to speak to Namingway to get him to change anyone's name.

FF's 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9 all allow you go name all your characters. 2 only allows the first four to be named, 5 and 10 your "main" character, and 8 the two main characters.
Besides, an RPG's not an RPG unless Maxx is saving the world. Then again, it's not technically role playing. Just last week I saved the earth from alien attack. But do they acknowledge it? Nooooo :rolleyes2

Yeah, I always did the naming thing. Sometimes after my friends, sometimes after Star Wars characters... Either way, in FFX it was ridiculous they way they skipped around saying Tidus' name..
"And then...and then...there's the new addition to the guardians" or whatever Yuna says..bothered me quite a bit.

I'm playing FFVII again and I'm naming all nine of my characters "Sephiroth".

I generally don't change the names, as the game is really a story about the characters and I like their original names for the full effect.
And the fact that they never said Tidus annoyed me to no end.
So really, if they're going to do it with speech, don't have the option to rename, it just makes it stupid.

Maybe in the future you could choose your character's name from a list of pre-recorded phonetic symbols, to give you at least some freedom to rename your characters...

That would sound really wierd, as it would be difficult to have the tonal variance set for the different emotional requirements for the game.

I say if you put in a simple name like Chris or somethin they should say it instead of just making references. ya'll agree?

I only ever used to change the main characters name, but now i dont. I just cant be bothered. Also, i always found it amusing as opposed to annoying how X managed to avoid saying Tidus, eg:
Auron: Hey new guy.
Tidus: Uh...me?
Auron: Who else?

I think they should've given us no choice about Tidus' name so the other voice actors could just say it out loud.

It might work if the character voices were synthesized instead of done by voice actors. It would be hard to insert different names into lines of dialogue otherwise.
The biggest problem is that the English alphabet isn't completely phonetic. It would work better in Japanese (with kana) or Korean.

I always used the default names, fit the game more, and if you happen to go on FF boards, i would make the mistake of saying the name of the character that I gave him.
I think I named Cloud in FFVII once to my name, this was the first time I played through the game, and is my best file :D

Don't we have text-to-speech tech now? I mean it would probably sound kinda fakey with current tech, but with time it might work well. Especially if the whole thing was done with a more phonic system, with extra symbols for long vowels and ch or sh sounds.
