Because of how drastically different EoEO and General Chat have become it should be allowed to have the same thread in each forum now. Say people want to joke around and have fun with the topic but it is in EoEO? Can't do it there because of this tarded-re policy of zeroed tolorance. Make a thread that is simliar but is meant to have fun in General Chat...NO!!!!!! NAZITIME! Close the thread. Direct people to the one that is already created and they make a wise crack and get banned!@?Rlfkj WHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?

I think we should be able to dual wield threads in General Chat and Eyes on Enormous Ovaries!

That is the thing. They are both the right forum. It depends on the person. Let us take the thread about aids. There is room for serious discussion as well as crazy ass off the wall ideas.

How did he cure it. With a shrink gun and the british army of course *goes into retarded story*

Then there all the serious stuff that is actually being said. Everything has a serious side and a humours side to it.

If you consider flaming a practical and humoerous joke to the rest of the EoFF, then yeah, you're right.

My assumption is that you're talking about the "Man cures himself of HIV" thread. I didnt ask for that thread to be closed, I wanted to follow what Big D suggested and try to 'mold' if you will, GC into a place where it wasnt a 100% spam fest as it currently is now. I was wrong, and now the only place to have a somewhat decent discussion is in EoEO. I wasnt expecting full blown answers to that thread, but something on topic, but that obviously isnt possible.

Im not 'dissing' spam, as I do it myself occasionaly (...frequently) but its sorta stupid where we cant have even one educated thread in GC and have to resort in EoEO. I believe the problem is in GC, not in EoEO.

A thread about AIDS in GC is going to get closed sooner than later any way you look at it. I can't see what type of crazy ass off the wall ideas you can post anywhere without it being closed.

EDIT: I agree with you 100%, Hawkeye. There used to be a time when that thread would have been fine in GC, but not with today's calibur of posters and posting.

edczxcvbnm
11-17-2005, 08:16 PM
That was just an example because it is current. Another example of fun stuff that is a bit more realistic would be the french riots.

If the problem is that GC is just way too spammy and you can't have a middle ground then maybe it is time for a spam type forum. So that way you can have the retarded zero tolorance policy and the equally retarded spam spam everywhere policy.

Also if you where ever looking for a decent dicussion in General Chat you must have never been in the right frame of mind. That is what EoEO is for. For serious dicussion. Why do you need 2 forums that accomplish the exact same thing?

Zero crapulance in one forum does not mean that it gets free reign in the rest. If everyone would just use their brain before posting all would be well. No Spam Forum. Why would be make a whole forum for something that we're trying to get rid of? Having it's own forum will just bring it out more. Look what happened after usernotes were introduced. Instead of bringing spam down it has increased it. Give someone an inch and they want the whole ruler.

What EoFF needs to do is be stricter on the spam that's going on. Might I say that some of it can amusing, but there's too much of it at the moment. In fact, it's horrible. Of course, there isn't a spam forum, but having a spam forum will make things worse. Believe me. If there is one, it will be filled with complete crap that it will go out of control.

So, what does the staff need to do is to get more strict on the spam that's going on in General Chat. What constitutes as spam? We don't know, but I trust the staff will be able to draw the line of what is considered spam. I'm sure that in-thread conversations can be considered spam, posts that would be more suited to PMs, usernotes, and/or IMs, and such.

I'm sure that there will be time to have fun spam, but those should be a once in awhile moments, not a daily thing like it is at the moment. That was the magic back then, we hardly had much spam, and once in awhile, spam happens, and it's special because it doesn't happen very often. Nowadays, it's spam every day 24/7. Why? Because the staff has gone lax on it. Deleting posts will not work, banning people won't either. If you want to slow down the spam, then delete General Chat, (besides some of the important threads or current threads you want to keep), and start over. With the removal of the threads, yes, there will be repeats of the threads, but the staff should be able to now control the spam and get more strict, now that almost all the spam is gone. Yes, this is risky business, and I'm in no way saying you should do this, but if you want to control the spam and keep everything in order, deleting and restarting General Chat will be a good way to start being more strict.

Leeza
11-18-2005, 03:15 AM
Deleting does not work, Proto. If you could only see the number of deletions you would know this. The only cure is to ban someone once you tell them that that is what will happen to them the next time they do what they were asked not to do. This is a lot easier said than done though because I really don't like to ban people, but sometimes it just has to be done for the good of all.

EDIT: I misread that. :) You said Delete GC and start over. Yeah, that might work. :)

Ace Protorney
11-18-2005, 03:23 AM
Of course, I also stated deleting posts and banning people will not work. It's a good thing you've already explained why deleting posts won't work, so I can try to explain why banning people won't work. One reason: Second Accounts.

Restarting General Chat, while keeping some of the current and important threads, will be your best bet to control the spam. The members may not like it, but EoFF needs to get rid of the nonsense. If the staff wants to consider this, I suggest that you guys start archiving some of the threads you want to keep forever.

eestlinc
11-18-2005, 03:31 AM
the solution to GC isn't having less bad threads, it's having more good threads. You have to make them. Everyone should spend more time thinking up good GC threads and less time complaining about how much GC sucks. If you can't come up with any good threads, then I guess that's a problem.

Hawkeye
11-18-2005, 03:37 AM
But the ratio of bad threads to good threads is getting out of hand. Big D is the only noticable person I believe who is trying to work from the "good threads" side. If the number of "bad threads" were toned down a bit, maybe good threads would get noticed better, than having to resort to another forum.

If the staff wants to consider this, I suggest that you guys start archiving some of the threads you want to keep forever. What, exactly, would deleting the whole of General Chat achieve? Great, the old spam is gone, and that's all very well and good, but which of these two scenarios do you honestly believe is the more likely:

Scenario A: Spammers, upon seeing the deletion of General Chat, have a revelation. Spam is not tolerated! They have seen the light! Spam is now a dirty word at EoFF, and the ex-spammers all go on to become legendary Cid's Knights.
Scenario B: Old spam gets replaced by new spam. Whoa-ho, problematic!

The problem is that spammers are glorified. A lot of the members think that spam is cool, and that being a spammer is a cool thing, and they all want to get in on the act and look damned cool! Who wouldn't? And therein lies your problem. Spam for the sake of spam or trying to look cool is invariably inferior to spam for the sake of personal enjoyment.

Wiping GC has been done before and to my knowledge it only encouraged spam. Maybe I'm remembering a different clean slate than you are. Either way, deleting GC is NOT something I would be going for, because a lot of those threads are good for reference. I'm happy that we no longer do mass deletions because I've lost so many threads in the past.

Yeah, Psy's not a huge problem these days as far as I know.

There's something I think a lot of people are missing out on, and that's that the problem doesn't always lie in the quality of threads but the quality of replies. About a month ago I went through 100 threads and noticed that all the threads that would have been closed in previous times of EoFF were closed, and all the others had some valid topic. The problem didn't lie in the threads being made, but rather the manner in which people spammed up the valid threads.

My preferred solution: Warn on first offence, usernote ban on second offence, final warning on third offence. Obviously the ol' ban comes after that. I remember HOORJ and how s/he got warned numerous times, said s/he'd stop numerous times and then carried on numerous times. Got banned, right? Yeah. I don't see why we can't do that again if people are doing the same thing.

Primus Inter Pares
11-18-2005, 10:45 AM
Spat is still complaining about HOORJ to this day because of all the "flack" he took for it, thing is, there will always be spam, I agree that too much is bad (really bad and annoying) and some of the spam is in poor taste and quality. The thing is, as a "spammer" I hardly have that many posts, and I've only spammed three of four times, yet I am classified as a spammer by many of the newer members and those I have gotten to know well in my short time here. Some proper spam should still be allowed (with limitations) but the useless short posts in bad taste or simply without substance that many people still post (like my post at the top of the page).

As Psy said, you should spam for the personal enjoyment (or boredom/lack of sleep) of it not to look cool etc. Although I find spamming to make me look like a total tool/idiot to be equally enjoyable :D however the current amount of spam that's arround is pretty annoying, the good threads quickly fall to the bottom while simple two or three word reply threads survive on.

But it's not the quality in GC that's the worst, nor is it feedback, that now has really improved since I was drunk tanked (not as a result but as a general observation) and you made the rules stricter. But the X-2 forum, I know I don't NEED to go there but it's a great way to release stress, either way the quality of some of the FF boards really is down and that brings more low quality replies.

It seems quite simple really, low quality threads and posts bring more low quality threads and posts, and while you can try to limit this the best solution would be to stop complaining about it and try to bring more high quality posts and threads into GC to promote this sort of posting. :twocents:

Also, the fact that there are no post counts should help the quality...

I've always been of the same opinion, not so much with age but with how long they've been here. You'll find that people who grow bitter of this place are the same people who don't get to know new people and just watch their friends go away while not picking up new ones. They also probably see the repeated threads a lot more negatively. I've always tried to get to know new people - not every one of them, but always some of them - as they come in. There's also the celebrity factor. That's when you join, you can talk about your private life openly with everyone here, because it's nothing to do with them. However, as time goes by, the things you want to talk about are to do with the friends you've picked up from here, and you can't talk as openly about your private life as you once could. I'm a good example of this last bit. When I first joined, I could talk about my girl troubles because nobody in the forums knew the girls. Now I have girl problems with well known members of these forums, and it's not so easy to talk about it.

I'm one of those people. I don't see myself as bitter, just bored sometimes. I need something to occupy me. ;) And I don't want to get to know new people. There are still enough cool people here to keep me entertained.

I hope you realise the one true thing holding you back from having more to occupy you is the fact that you say you'll add the pimp smiley if you get such an occupation. :mad2:

Because I disappeared for a fair few long stretches of time, most of the regulars now are completely unknown to me, which is probably for the best too XD But yeah, the only way I can even stand this place is to randomly fly in, make a post or two in threads that catch my interest again, and then disappear, like a wrinkly ninja. I used to post like, 50+ times a day, and now I struggle to make 5, and most of those come in feedback or the site staff forums.

Personally, I find myself coming here less because of all these crap threads. I say we completely get rid of General Chat for a couple weeks. If that doesn't work, shut down the boards for two weeks. That should make people realize that if they don't start posting with a little dignity, the boards will be gone (for them). Or we could ban every member who has a name longer than ten letters. (That's just random, I don't have anything against names with 10+ letters. :)

Or alternatively, ban three members.

The current state of general chat right this moment, really does make me sad, it's over a small thing as spam, spam can be good, but really spam is the worst thing that can happen to a forum. The only thing those who shall remain unnamed have running for em is that they aren't trolling. If you're going to make more than 5 posts in a thread and then keep posting with only two other people this shouldn't be accepted withing such a short period of time in such a large forum.

Therefore, we can conclude it is all the Ciddies' fault, and so therefore Award Guy's fault, and so therefore Loony BoB's fault, and that we should ban Loony BoB, which is something I've been recommending for a while now. Wish you'd listened to me now, don't you?

That thread had more than 3 people in it, pictures and a general tone of quality spam about it. Comparing it to the current abominations in Gen Chat that come about when Shoden, Alive-Man and GunbladeMaster posts is an insult to everyone that posted in that thread.

AND it was oldbie spam, thus making it legal, funny, and witty. :D

We can ban every non-staff member who has the letter a in their name, or whose name ends in oden. Or both.

Quit the digs, guys. Some of us find your spam to be just as crap as theirs, I assure you. :) And I also assure you that there are definitely more than just 1-3 members that have crap spam in EoFF. Also, most of the spammers seem to be picking up dislikes for each other... I can sort of see this film plot unwinding. A bit like some kind of gang war, where there's this one big gang, along with a few smaller gangs and a couple of individuals who are all trying to make it in the world of the bigger gangs. And then there's this crime squad, who are given the job of not just getting the gang wars to go away, but also the job of getting the gangsters to turn straight, and all the while they have to do it with minimum casualties on both sides. I got popcorn.

Some will rise out of the ashes and a new order may be formed, alliances changed, the gangsters will however continue to entertain until this time, and as the new order rises...
