Well should I, considering it's online meaning it would suck... and the servers would eventually go down, should I buy it? also explain what it's about...

I think it's an awesome game and the fact that it's online is why I enjoy it so much. If you dislike online games, then don't even bother.
So ditto Khaotic.

If they made an offline version, I would be satisfied...

You've answered your own question then. Sorry if I seem harsh, I just find it odd how people come here asking if they should get ffxi, but they think the idea of online ff is just stupid. If its so stupid, then dont get it, its quite simple.

That's like saying, oh I wish I could have that Vanilla Coke. Only without the vanilla. And instead of coke, just cubes of ice.
This is an online game. Everything in the game revolves around the fact that it's online. An "offline version" wouldn't amount to much.
If you enjoy playing with friends, needing a group for most of the questing/missions/leveling you do, then get this game. If you don't want an online game, then just play the others?
This game requires a lot of time, and you're gonna need gil to get the gear you need. If you have enough patience to farm for days for one piece of equipment, then at least try this game out.
Yeah, eventually the servers would go down, but without the amount of people playing, I doubt that would happen anytime soon.

By the time that happens we wont be playing anymore most likely, you worry too much, do you think about your loved ones dying daily as well, even though that shouldn't happen for awhile?

Exactly!
They are just releasing, what looks like a very very awesome, new expansion. I don't think they'd let it die within a fair few years. Even then they'd have more expansions out, making it last even longer.

But what about twenty years later, you may feel all nostalgic and decide to play FF7 on your computer by downloading an ISO...
But for FF11.... it would be gone... forever...

I felt that way in the beginning. I hated that it was online and wouldn't last forever... that I couldn't line it up on the shell with all of the rest of my collection and go back and play it another day. I didn't play it for a year after the US release and then finally I caved in and I love it.
Honestly, MMORPGs that don't suck to begin with have very long lives. After around 3 years FFXI is still in its infancy compared to other MMOs that despite lowered populations are still around to this day. It was only a year ago that we had to add more servers to make room for all of the players. The diminish of players hasn't even begun. I'd say the game still has several years before it starts to dwindle in players... at least 2 or 3 more. At that point they will start to consolidate servers but all that means is the same number of people you are used to playing with on perhaps a different server.
FFXI could easily be around for another 5 years and I'm fairly certain you could get your fill from it in that time. Just don't expect the same things you expect from offline games. If you open yourself up for new experiences I think you'll find the game rather fresh and enjoyable.

Could someone tell me when EQ started? Its still running even now, and UO too.
As SE stated, they wont shut it off if you guys still have interest in it.

So all in all, you shouldn't worry about anything dying anytime soon.

I'm not sure about EQ but I know that UO is about 10 years old now... thus my point. I know there are some older MMORPGs that are more text based that are still happening.
Also, a lot of old games that lose support by their parent company get taken up by private servers. Granted support will cease and the owners of the private servers can operate a little more loosely but I don't think the game will ever die 100%... especially within the amount of time you might actually wish to play it. You can just move on to a private server and people who want to give it a shot might be able to check it out on a private server long after SE has cancelled support for it (which I don't forsee happening for quite some time)

play FF1 or FF5 if you want something offline and somewhat close to FFXI...

And from the look of things, FFXII is very similar to FFXI as well. I guess it'd be a good alternative to FFXI.
