what do you think about the name of the characters? for example, Vincent (Valentine) comes from the latin verb "vincere" (to defeat)!
Are you agree with the choice of their name, and why?

SPOILERS

Cloud Strife - not much to say here
Barret Wallace - original name was Bullet, which is self explanitory
Aerith Gainsborough - can be rearranged to spell 'I, earth'. Gainsborough is a small town in Lincolnshire.
Tifa Lockheart - possibly derived from 'Tiphereth', one of the ten sephirots that represented glory and beauty.
Red XIII, aka Nanaki - Nanaki is an anagram of Anakin (Skywalker). Another reference to Star Wars apart from Biggs and Wedge.
Cait Sith - not sure about this one
Cid Highwind - there's got to be a Cid, and this one just happens to have similar skills to Kain Highwind, and its the name of his airship.
Yuffie Kisaragi - I like the name, not sure of its meaning though
Vincent Valentine - you've covered that
Sephiroth - the sephirot are the ten attributes created by God through which he can project himself to the universe and man, much like what Sephiroth was doing from inside the Northern Crater. Good choice of name.

And now for the important characters....

Heidegger - I think it is taken from a German philosopher name Martin Heidegger....

Rufus - Might be named after William II (called "Rufus", perhaps because of his red-faced appearance). William II is pretty ruthless pretty much like Rufus.

No, because it should be pronounced 'Shee'.

Well actually both are wrong (unless of course the 'I' in 'Tiphereth' is pronounced with an 'e' sound). Tifa is pronounced 'Tee-fa'. Yes I do have back up. Ahem. The vowel 'I' in Japanease is pronounced as an 'e' sound. Also if the name was pronounced as Tiff - ah, then there would be two 'f's' to shorten the 'I' sound - Tiffa. So its definatly got nothing to do with having breakfast at Tiffany's....:D :D :D But it's definalty still possible the name came from 'Tiphereth' if the 'I' is an 'e' sound.

Safer-Sephiroth means "Book of Numbers"(like from the Bible) in Hebrew, Nibelheim is a changed version of Niflheim, a norse word, meaning either world of man or world of god, I don't remember. Midar is Midgard, meaning the opposite of Niflheim. The Zolom is a snake-like creature that stretched around the entire world of Midgard, hence the giant Midgar Zolom. Ragnarok means the end of the world- also norse- and is one of Cloud's weapons.

Back to Sephiroth, Masamune is the legendary sword forged by Masamune (the word means Fron of blade(Masa), Back of blade(Mune)) and is the 'peaceful' blade, which if put in the river would not allow a single leaf to be cut by it, instead it cut the water so the leaf would be redirected((Muasame was the rival of it, the blodthirsty blade, that cut every leaf floating near it)) and hence it didn't gather Aeris's blood.

Safer Sephiroth has wings, because he is the stereotype of Christian Angels, a warrior angel from heaven had 6 wings on his back. His theme is "The One Winged Angel" due to the deformed right arm he has. He has the form he does, because he accomplished his goal to "become a god" and because it would help to fight mentally the heroes, as they would be fighting something generally heavenly and holy in nature, whether they beleive he is holy or not. (Appearances are hard to get over.) And also the halo... angel etc.

His attack "Pale Horse" refers to the horse Jesus would appear riding upon the war of Armageddon, I beleive leading the 4 hosemen of the apocolypse(Famin Pestelence another one and then Death) His SuperNova, refers to his Meteor... nuff said there.(Knights of the Round, refer to King Arthur's knights, who searched for the holy grail)

That pretty much sums Sephiroth up. :kaoplain:

Apocalyse - biblical final battle between good and evil... destruction of earth
Masamane - Japanese legend about two smiths who made blades (possibly katanas) in which masamune's weapons brought luck, while muramasas blades were blood thirsty...
I've heard of another weapon called the murasame but it could just be a play on the muramasa.... not so sure)
Costa del Sol - means "Sun Coast"
Junon - possibly from the Roman word Juno, wife of Jupiter (greek Zeus)
Malboro - from the brand of cigaretts Malborough... Bad breath is dereived from one of the symptoms which smoking can cause

Was that intentional or just a translation error?

Yeah... because they also lable Tseng as 'Shion'.

Plus they pronounce Cloud as 'Croudo' :)

And on with the names..

Aeris/Aerith also means air.

Cait Sith - irish gaelic meaning "fairy cat"... in folklore her wears a crown...

Shiva - Hindu god of destruction AND a Celtic goddess (wears little clothing)

Cait Sith is Celtic. Said to wander the moors of SCOTLAND, our brothers in tounge.
Shiva is a Gaelic Goddess. So what about clothes?
Also, Aeris is latin for Cloud (mystical link?).

Both are correct. Shiva appears as both the Hindu god of destruction and rebirth and a Celtic/Gaelic goddess.

Cloud - This is obviously a mistranslation, as his name should have been Clod.
Tifa - Shortened form of "Latifa", as in Dana Owens.
Aerith - Properly translated this means "pink" in Flemmish.
Barret - This was naturally a mistranslation. His name is supposed to be Bullet, an obvious homage to the Bill Waterson character Tracer Bullet, who is the basis for "Barret"'s character.
Cid - Doesn't mean anything.
Cait Sith - This is clearly just Engrish.
Yuffie - I've heard this is an old Scandanavian word which means "conqueror".
Vincent - Obviously a reference to Vincent Vega. Who else?

Light Mage
12-01-2005, 12:10 AM
Jessie - from the homosexual cowboy Jesse James
Biggs - from the famous porn star of the same name
Wedge - because he keeps getting wedged in the door when he walks through it

Elmyra - from the Tiny Toons character Elmyra Fudd, she was fond of animals and would adopt strays. (Aeris)
