How do you bypass a firewall on the server of the ISP you're using.

Say... I'm using my universities internet connection and need to bypass their firewall to connect to mIRC. How would I go about doing this?

Use a different port. If you can't use a different port, say you have to connect to mIRC on port 123, then you have to use a different port to connect to a computer outside the firewall which can use port 123. SSH can be used for this. Google for "SSH tunnel".

hmmm, i dunno, PJIRC also doesn't work. And the port trick didn't work, and the SSH thing just sounds too technical for me, and I'm lazy and at work and cannot leave. Anyways, thanks for the help Unne.

One thing you could try is using mIRC (or other chat client) with SSL enabled, since SSL-enabled IRC servers usually use a different port to the normal ones that get blocked :p

But yeah, best way around firewalls I find is SSH - just stick a linux box running sshd outside the firewall where you can access it and use that to bounce to where you want to go :p
