View Full Version : Gilgamesh, what's his deal?

Someone mentioned in another post that there are hardly and discussion topics with FFV so here's my contribution.

What's the deal with this guy? He bugs you pretty much the whole way through the game until you run into him at the end, then he acts confused, and leaves. Then he shows up again to finish off Necrophobe.

He reminded me alot of Goblez (I think that was his name) from FFIV. However, when that guy changed to your side, he had a good explanation, he was Cecil's brother and if recall correctly, he was being controlled by Zeromus (or whatever his name was).

Gilgamesh on the other hand just seemed to bail for some reason.

Anyone want to shed some light on this?

Gilgamesh is the real hero of FFV. Always at the forefront of danger, he cleverly creates the ruse that he is working for Ex-Death, when in reality he is there to make sure the Light Warriors suceed. I mean, why else would he carry that Genji gear, the most powerful armour in the world, just waiting to be stolen? He couldn't just give the armour to them, that would be too obvious. Better it seem like he accidentally had it stolen. Then he sacrificies his own life so that the Light Warriors can save the universe. Gilgamesh, we salute you sir!

Gilgamesh takes the exalipoor sword and ambushes our heros. this sword was bait for our heroes as they would have certainly used it against x-death. So x-death banishes gilgamesh to the x-zone. when our heroes reach the x-zone, gilgamsh thinks that they have been banished here too, or have died and this is where their spirits now roam. however, when he realises that they fought their way into the x-zone to kill x-death, he is quick to help them against necrophobe so that they can destroy x-death. Gilgamesh was never really evil, he allied himself with side he thought would win. All gilgamesh desires is to fight the worthiest oponents and beat them to prove to his master that he deserves to be by his side. when betrayed however, gilgamesh realises that honour in battle will triumph over anything else and decides to help the warriors by giving his own life.

Gilgamesh is a comic-relief villain, in the same vein as successors like Ultros, the Turks, and so on. For his part, he is Ex-Death's lackey--for whatever reason.

As to his aiding Bartz and company, his loyalty to Ex-Death effectively ends when he is banished to the Cleft of Dimension.

Exdeath: Gilgamesh!

Gilgamesh: ...

Exdeath: You worthless. To the Cleft of Dimension!

Gilgamesh: D... don't!! Forgive me!

Exdeath: Silence!

The Cleft of Dimension and its powerful monsters proved to be less than an amenable situation for Gilgamesh. When the party encounters Gilgamesh, he realizes that they're his only way out of the Cleft, and that they're nice guys on top of it.

Gilgamesh: Another monster! Butz!? it's you isn't it!! Why didn't you say
so? The monsters here are scary and I can't find my way out. I'm about to
cry. By the way, how'd you get here?

Butz explains how they got here.

Gilgamesh: I see, now I can get home! How'd you like to escape?

Butz: ...

Gilgamesh: Oh yeah, that's right.

Butz: Well if we live, let's meet again.

Gilgamesh: I know we will. At that time we'll be friends. Later!

If one fights Necrophobia, and does not defeat the boss too quickly, Gilgamesh will make a final appearance, and redeem himself for any past transgressions.

Necrofobia: Gilgamesh!!

Gilgamesh: Phew! I made it!! If I go home right now, I'll remain in history
as a weakling!

Necrofobia: Heh. Blabbermouth, I'll get rid of you first!

Necrofobia attacks Gilgamesh. It almost always misses though.

Gilgamesh: You're pretty good! You can even defeat, the great Gilgamesh?!

Gilgamesh turns around to fight Necrofobia.

Gilgamesh: Cara, your grandfather, he was a strong man!

Cara: Grandpa.

Gilgamesh: Faris, go fall in love! Then you'd be more feminine!

Faris: ...

Necrofobia attacks Gilgamesh again.

Gilgamesh: Lenna, never forget you love for animals.

Lenna: ...

Gilgamesh: Butz, I would have like to have a one on one battle with you! You
were such good friends.

Necrofobia: Gilgamesh, DIE!

Necrofobia casts flare at Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh: That's my line!

I forgot that Gilgalmesh was banished by Exdeath. If I had remembered that part that would've made my last meeting with him make a whole lot more sense.

I like how his number of arms varies from battle to battle and from game to game.

Actually they are. At least acording to Sqaure.

(EDIT: No they're not, I just wanted them to be back then... I've grown up now.)

SE has never made such a statement. The only official dissemination regarding connectivity involves the Kazushige Nojima interview at the end of the Final Fantasy X-2 Ultimania Guide, where he intimates that he feels that FFVII and FFX/X-2 could be connected. However, those were merely his feelings at the time, and never received any sort of elaboration or verification. To suggest a connection between the other games is sheer fabrication.

I'll simply reassert my previous point: no official dissemination of such information, whether in document or interview, has been made.

The amount of hands he has. It makes a lot of people happy. He can scratch all parts of his body at once and dun get too close when he is wanking. Oh god.
