...no. but each Final Fantasy game sort of follows a pattern. so - who's the hyperactive, usually teenage girl? and how about the one who always seem so optimistic, etc?

Yuffie -> Selphie -> Rikku

...Eiko can add to that. another one can be Squall -> Cloud...quite the anti-hero/taciturn.

EDIT: raskerino, i meant to say that Squall -> was similar to Cloud. i thought that's how the person above did it, but it did seem peculiar when i saw it, xD.

I'd say there are similar characters but I've never been able to call them all that close. There is a hyperactive female, but she's always very different within that.

And Yuffaye, Squall didn't lead to Cloud. Also I wouldn't call Tifa the first in the series of Tifa->Rinoa->Garnet->Yuna, because I think Tifa's toughness is very different then the others. But I don't think any of those characters fit together.

And Red XIII->Quina->Kimahri clearly doesn't work. Quina in no way possible fits into that category. Quina is loud, obnoxious, immature and in some peoples eyes (including mine) funny.

Barret -> Steiner -> Auron

Ummm, those three characters are absolutely nothing alike. Barret's a tough guy with a gun on his arm who's looking to kick as much butt as he has to save the world, preferably while swearing a lot. Steiner's a somewhat bumbling knight who spends a good chunk of the game blindly following orders and worried about nothing but his duty to Garnet and her mother. Auron is the wise tough guy, who knows more than he let's on and acts as something of a father figure to Tidus and the gang on their journey, wanting them to find the truth about the world for themselves.

Nothing about those three characters personalities strikes me as being similar to one another.

I think that their personalities are different, but there can be found similarities, sure. Most of the similarities, though, are probably going to be influenced by either writing conventions or, more importantly, the roles that they have to fill in the party.

Quistis and Lulu, for instance, are different people, but they take on some similarities in large part because of their 'older sister' sort of roles.

I think that putting them into trees is probably going to oversimplify their personalities, too. For instance, Yuna, Rinoa and Tifa are very, very different people--and I'd have to disagree that Tifa is tougher than the others in that tree, if that's what you meant, because from what I remember, Tifa isn't actually very tough at all when it comes to personal matters, though it might not be fair to take her dealings with Cloud as an indicator of that. (Edit: Unless you mean she has a different sort of toughness, which I'll go along with, because she does.)

You can group them, but it's more 'party roles' than 'personality types', and even that doesn't hold up universally. Squall, Cloud, and Tidus make a strange group in therms of personality, but Selphie, Rikku, and Yuffie don't really fill the same role at all in the party.

Characters will share some personality traits with others just like in real life. It would be both impossible and unrealistic to create characters which shared nothing in common with any others. I can't think of any characters which are exactly alike in every way. You only have to look at what people are like in real life to see that it is common for people to be similar to each other.

If you insist on grouping them like this, i believe:

RedXIII -> Freya -> Kimahri
Vincent-> Amarant-> Auron

would make a better grouping in terms of both personality and roles

Tidus = cloud + zell (kinda)
Tifa and Rinoa do look a little alike, but Tifa's just plain cool
Vincent and amarant have a close personality (kinda)

the point is that some characters do tend to look alike, and their character traits do resemble others but each one stands for a different purpose, has different involvments, different morales, different cool-arsed limit breaks and do have significant appearance differences, when it comes down to it, there aren't really any that can be labelled as similar

Ummm, those three characters are absolutely nothing alike.

I think you (and several others) missed the point of my analysis. While the characters' personalities are different, they all serve basically the same purposes in the game. I'll go into more detail:

Yuffie -> Selphie -> Eiko -> Rikku
Hyper, cheerful girls who provide comic relief and are usually the "other hot chick." These four probably have the most similar (arguably identical) personalities-- Eiko being the most distinguishable, if only because she's a child.

Tifa -> Rinoa -> Garnet -> Yuna
The strong-willed but sensitive leading lady who wins over the main males-- usually proficient with white magic/healing.

Zell/Irvine -> Wakka
The bouyant, hopeful, encouraging sidekick to the main male.

Barret/Cid -> Steiner -> Auron
The independent tough guy. Always the hard-hitter of the bunch.

RedXIII -> Quina/possibly Freya -> Kimahri
The (usually useless) non-human character.

And, another that occurred to me now:

Quistis -> Freya -> Lulu
The strong, seemingly detached independent woman.

Of course, I'm not saying all the characters within these groups have exactly the same personalities, but they're close enough and serve similar enough purposes that you can recognize the types in each game.
