I was speaking to my maths tutor he showed me some pictures of his country i honestly thought it was Americia because it had big cities big expensive shopping centres and expensive cars then he told me it was his country Africa. I replied i thought Africa was poor and he said No hastings is more poor then Africa. Actually so is most of England compared to this country. Any where i asked him so what about the adverts they do for children in need and things like that he said that it was all a lie that the people who make these videos and take pictures gat to keep the money!! so things like oxfam and stuff the money dosent go to them so BEWARE!!! PEOPLE!!

I don't know what Africia is, but if you're speaking of Africa, then yes, it's very poor. Mainly because we don't help them enough.

She probably found South Africa, which has it's rich parts, Africa back in the colonial days was very rich, pumping out huge amounts of food and minerals in great surplus, after the colonial powers withdrew this changed, Africa under poor local management and simple feuds simply collapsed without any organisation, leading to food shortages and inneficient handling of incredible mineral resources at its disposal lead to the Africa today.

But it's fair to argue that - in some cases - the people of Africa's poor areas would rather live independently, traditionally; without the aid of others.

But still, if that Oxfam stuff is right. Well, that's not nice. ;x

1. Africa isn't a country

2. Many places in Africa are nice. The sub-saharan area is the worst part, but North Africa (countries such as Tunisia, Egypt etc) and Southern Africa are developing well.

No, it's not because we don't help, it's because we actively hinder. Socialist measures like trade tarriffs and farming subsidies mean that African individuals have almost zero chance of competing with the west, so they in turn stay poor.

We can keep giving Africa fish, or we can stop sinking their boats when they try to fish for themselves. Africa doesn't want and, if things were fair, would not need aid. They'd be perfectly able to stand on their own feet, and I'm sure a continent that size with a good 800,000,000 people in it would be able to do some damn fine things for Humanity.

Remember that Africa is not a country. Africa is a continent. Some parts are poor and some are rich. And Africa is bloody huge too so some places are neglected a bit.

...what? Firstly "we" have never hindered African development, Africans pushed for independence and while during the colonial times the conditions for Africans wasn't the best, it was still a lot better than today, even back then. The problem is simply political instability and corruption, we're not to blame here, it's quite simple.

We can keep giving Africa fish, or we can stop sinking their boats when they try to fish for themselves. Africa doesn't want and, if things were fair, would not need aid.
...what are you on about? Firstly, where are these boats being sunk? Or are you using a metaphor (I'll guess the latter as a compliment to your intelligence) It's not a matter of blaming outside influences

They'd be perfectly able to stand on their own feet, and I'm sure a continent that size with a good 800,000,000 people in it would be able to do some damn fine things for Humanity.
Yeah, this has been attempted, and failed, since the establishment of the United Nations and the decolonisation of Africa, there has been growing instability, not as a result of outside influences but as a result of a removal of outside influences, Africa on a purely geographical perspective has one of the greatest potentials of all the continents.

What, yeah, I was too busy reading that "My Rikku" thread again to pay attention to what I put in bold, but I did edit it before you made that post.

I think I can rant about the Catholic church now.

The decision by the new pope to keep up the hard-line anti-condom stance even in Africa is completely ignorant to the needs of the continent. With huge numbers of HIV/AIDS sufferers in Sub-Saharan Africa a place which has a relatively high Catholic Christian following this decision not to lift a total condemnation of condoms is pure stupidity.

Although, a lot better alternative would be abstenance, 'cause when you think about it, if you can't feed one child, why have ten?

Way to generalise a whole friggin' continent, good job. :p

I don't know; I think Africa's past colonisation has a lot to do with where it is today. Someone told me that when lands were conquered for the many wonderful Empires popping up like moles from a ground, it was easiest to do it with the 'divide and conquer' method. Play the people against themselves. Maybe it was foolish of people to fall for that trick, but whatever. They were played against themselves, and now they're stuck with what...remember Rwanda?

And Sudan. Sudan's a huge problem in Africa. Yes, people did smurf up there. Civil war on and off for twenty years, and aid gets there far too late. I spoke to a man from Medecins Sans Frontier, and he said it was ages before people even attempted to get aid in, never mind any blockades. Air lifts? Seriously. I'm glad the problems in Sudan have died down now, though. I really really felt sorry for those poor people. Imagine living in a land with a raging civil war almost amounting to genocide for 20 bloody years. Now, I'm not sure if Sudan was a former colony or not. Can anyone clear this up?

South Africa is cool. I love the place, used to live there! :D It's beautiful; seriously beautiful. And the African cultures are so diverse and beautiful.

The King of Swaziland is an idiot and should be forcibly dethroned for the good of his poor people. :)

Edit: Also, what is Canada?

the point is that it depends which country in Africa you are referring to... As someone stated before, the northern countries and South Africa tend to be doing well... The poorest countries tend to be in the Center, West and East coast of the continent... Oh and not all Africans are black... The people living in the northern countries such as Libya, Morocco and Western Sahara, and Egypt, tend to be of Arabic or European descent (this includes South Africa)...

Africa is poor apparently because it's government rapes all productive income. That's why African's in the interviews tell that showering the country with money does little good. That the only way to be prosperous is to show the people how to support themselves instead of depending on a government that only takes and doesn't give.

I'm glad SOMEONE else knows Canada's fake. Seems like everyone believes in that and Japan. :rolleyes2

PiP: Believe me, I'm goddamned fed up of us in the West getting blamed for all of Africa's problems. However, trade barriers need to be removed, so that at least individuals in Africa can prosper. Also because they should just be removed, period, they're an archaic measure from the era of mercantilism and the gold standard.

Anyways, I've not even blinked when people refer to Africa as a single entity. Those parts of it which are free from poverty and civil war can consider themselves excluded from this discussion.

(Of course, on the opposite side this merely proves my point that nations and states etc. as any more than geographic denominations = failure, because if not every country in Africa is the same, it stands to reason that not every city is. And not every district in every city. And not every family in a district in a district, and not every individual in a family.) So unless we want to start talking about specific people who we know in Africa, I think it's ok to speak about 'Africa' as a whole, because it's self-evident that we're not going to be worrying about the rich parts when we discuss poverty.

I've been missing Cloud as well. =/ Someone should let him back in.
