THIS IS A PS2 GAME!!

OFFICIAL RELEASE: Aug 22, 2006
Source: gamespot article! (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/dirgeofcerberusfinalfantasyvii/index.html)

Here is most of the information about the new game by Square Enix:

STORY LINE

Although Dirge of Cerberus was announce about a year ago Square Enix has still said very little about the storyline behind Dirge of Cerberus. However, here is what we know so far.
A sudden appearance of a mysterious group called the Deep Ground Soldiers as they attacks Kalm plunges the town in chaos. The Deep Ground Soldiers are a section of SOLDIER, created by the ShinRa Company on the President ShinRa's orders underneath Midgar. When Meteor struck Midgar at the end of Final Fantasy VII they became trapped but they have now escaped their underground lair. Vincent Valentine is somehow connected to the Deep Ground Soldiers as they seem to have been searching for him for some time.
Reeve Tuesti former Head of Urban Development at ShinRa is now the leader of the World Restoration Organization who are a large organization who basically carry out more than AVALANCE could ever have hoped. Their job is to restore the world and prevent anyone from damaging it further. Barret and Tifa are thought to be part World Restoration Organization and are probably leading some of the missions.
Along side the main story line is is clear that Vincent's painful past will be uncovered including his tragic love with Lucrecia. We may also find out what happened to Vincent during Hojo's experimentation on him.

HISTORY OF VINCENT

May contain spoilers, read it at your own risk.
Vincent Valentine was a Turk and was selected to supervise the science project led by his farther, Grimoire Valentine. He fell in love a scientist who was assisting Grimoire in the project, called Lucrecia Crescent. When Grimoire died Lucrecia left Vincent, because she felt guilty about his fathers death. Vincent later catches up with Lucrecia when observing the Jenova Project based in Nibelheim led by Professor Gast. Here Vincent proposed to Lucrecia but she turned him down and started a relationship with Hojo who was also working on the Jenova Project.
Lucrecia fell pregnant for the baby to become the next experiment, the effects of Jenova Cells on an unborn child. Vincent objected to using living subjects being experimented on, especially Lucrecia but she continued regardless. The experiment made her become increasingly ill and Vincent confronted Hojo about it. Hojo ended the conflict by shooting Vincent in the stomach. Hojo then shut him in a Lifestream Pod in the Mount Nibel Mako Reactor where Lucrecia infected Vincent with contaminated Mako, G Substance, and became Chaos.
Vincent, being influenced by Chaos, filled with rage and broke free of his pod, Lucrecia used some meteria that could control Chaos and put Vincent into a deep sleep. When he woke up on the operating table in the basement of Shin-Ra Mansion but Hojo and Lucrecia had already gone. Vincent was distraught with rage about the modifications to his body and shut himself in the coffin. Hojo locks the coffin and the room, places the key in the safe and hides the combination and sets out the clues to find it again.

The highest ranking elite squad within Deep Ground Soldier. All but one of the members of the group are named after colors, hence the group's name, Zvet, which is Russian for colors. Five members appear in the single player mode, and at least one more member appears in the online mode. It is currently unknown how many total members there will be, or how many are still alive at the end of the game.

His body is always covered in darkness, and the player can not see his figure clearly. The darkness Nero controls draws in everything, and it is possible for him to take them out of it. It is said that the restraint like outfit he wears is to keep his power under control. His name means black in Italian.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/97/Vicedoc.PNG Weiß: aka Weiss or Vice: A mysterious SOLDIER who commands the DGS. Called "Seiger Weiß, The Immaculate Emperor", he declares a hunt on the world three years after the Meteor crisis. All Deep Ground SOLDIERS fear his power, and follow him, but it's said that they rarely see him directly. He has spiky gray hair and wields two katana-rifle hybrids (sometimes referred to as "gunblades" by fans, though they're notably different from the Final Fantasy VIII weapons that are officially referred to by that name). He is actually housing the computer-simulated personality of Hojo, and becomes possessed by this. This emulated version of Hojo, through Weiß's body, had the DGS adbuct those not under the effects of Geostigma to serve as incubators of enough pure Mako to enable Weiß to asborb Omega. However, Weiß managed to fight back control over his body and committed sucide, taking Hojo with him. His name means, white in German.

DG SOLIDERS

President ShinRa order the creation of a new army in an underground facility beneath Midgar, "Deep Ground", but when Meteor crashed into Midgar at the end of Final Fantasy VII they were trapped with no way to escape to the surface. As a link to ShinRa each Deep Ground Soldier has the SOLDIER badge on their uniform. Three years after the end of Final Fantasy VII they have found a way out of their underground tomb and are free to do what they feel.
The startup sequence from the demo of Dirge of Cerberus at Square Enix Party 2005 shows the Deep Ground Soldiers attacking what is Kalm in the middle of the Kalm Revival Festival causing panic and mayhem in the city. Why they are attacking is still not clear but it seems that they are looking for Vincent. Why the Deep Ground Soldiers are after Vincent is not clear but there are a number of theories floating around. The Deep Ground Soldiers have a lot of technology available to them, much of which they use to find what they need or to get it. They have very powerful weapons, vehicles including helicopter like machines and many other things. There have also been a number of beasts and strange creates they have control over. What they are is still unknown, they could very easily be people that have been mutated in some of Professor Hojo's experiments.

Here's the full story from the Localisation thread. You might want to update your first post, Niro. Online play is out...

LOS ANGELES--Believe it or not, the designers of Dirge of Cerberus--the third-person action game starring Final Fantasy VII's vampy anti-hero Vincent Valentine--didn't think the game was perfect when it was released in Japan earlier this year. Or at least, after receiving player feedback and doing some of their own design retrospection, they decided to retool many of the aspects of the game before its August release in the states. You don't often see a game like this so radically tweaked during the localization process, so we were interested to see everything that's new in the forthcoming North American version.

For starters, Vincent himself will play a lot differently. He now runs noticeably faster--1.2 times faster, to be precise. You also won't experience as drastic a slowdown when you've got your weapon drawn in aiming mode (and you can further reduce this drag by customizing your weapon to make it lighter). There's also a new double-jump move that will come in handy in more open areas, and you can even perform shooting attacks and melee combos in midair now. Vincent's dive-roll dodge move has been supplanted with a dash move that gets you out of the way just as well, but lets you recover into an attack position faster. Finally, the limit break special attack move no longer detracts from your magic bar; instead, you'll have to find single-use limit break items to invoke this special power.

The game balance has also been changed quite a bit. There's no more easy difficulty mode--now you start out with only normal and hard, and finishing either of those modes unlocks an "extra hard" mode that contains a whopping 40 special missions (which become unlocked as you go) as well as new, modded weapons. You'll also be able to access a character model viewer and artwork and sound galleries by playing through these bonus missions, which promise to be among the most difficult in the game.

40 missions sounds like a lot to add, huh? You had to figure there'd be a tradeoff somewhere, and indeed Dirge of Cerberus will lose its online multiplayer mode for the US release. In fact, most of the bonus missions are adapted directly from the previous multiplayer content. Square Enix reps said this was mainly due to the relative unpopularity of the company's PlayOnline service in America, and because the game's online mode required the PS2 hard drive, which has a very small installed base here. Besides, they wanted to offer a more tightly focused single-player game instead. You'll still have mouse and keyboard support, if you want to play the game more like a shooter, though.

Anyway, if the multiplayer mode is gone, at least you've still got Gackt. The gothic Japanese renaissance man--who makes music, acts, provides anime voice work, and stars in his own game in his mother country--adds his likeness to an enigmatic character in Dirge of Cerberus, as well as providing two songs for the soundtrack. We had to confirm that Gackt's contributions would remain intact, for those members of the American audience looking forward to them.

I just read a review about this game and it wasn't that bad! the main problem was the inverted aiming! that was a bad move SE, but for your first first-person shooter you did a great job, but it should've came out on PS3, because by the time the game comes out only ff fans will want, because regular gamers will be awaiting the new system!

nirojan
07-01-2006, 04:16 PM
ye i know what you mean. The release date should've been earlier!
it's coming out just 1/2 months before PS3 and that's a major problem. Of course no one is going to buy it while it's 500-600 buckz, but people will want to save up for it! No normal gamer is going to pick up this title and enjoy it knowing that a new playstation console is already out! Only ff fans(like me) will want it to find out vincents story and keep their ff collection going!

So it will be released only on PS2? Great, now I'll have to buy PS2 for this... Well, at least then I'll be able to play my FFX again :D

Thanks for all the info, btw :)

It's actually a good thing Square made this for the PS2, how many people are actually going to buy a PS3 and have enough money for the game at the same time? Me, I'm getting the next to Final Fantasy games and then waiting until Final Fantasy XIII comes out, that's when I'll get a PS3. I'm going to pick this game up and enjoy it the same way I would if a console wasn't coming out, it's way too expensive now anyway(and I'm broke).

It's a shame about multiplayer, I could care less about online games usually (they cost money I don't have), but this would be one game that might have been worth it. Hopefully these 40+ levels are worth the switch. Even if the game is a flop people still will need to buy it, otherwise Final Fantasy games heading in the adventure industry will be a thing of the past.

Got a question about the game. I just completed it today (what a short game...though I expected that) and maybe I missed something but what's with the Protomateria? As far as I know it just popped into existance. As far as I know, materia need to be made by the compression of Mako energy.
