iPod's have good memory, but are prone to becoming screwed up.
In my personal expreience, never get a cheap Japanese iPod rip-off. They don't work well at first. Then they just don't work.

$200 is a lot for spending. You can get a big one now for way less than that.

How is the Zen, interface, battery life, ease of use? that kind of stuff? Are you happy with it?
The battery life is wonderful. It'll go 24 hours, which is more than what I need. It takes about 4 hours to fully charge. As far as interface and ease of use goes, I preferred my old Motorola m500. The design is this:

Random--||---PreviousSong

With the || as the scrolling device. The less sensitivity, the easier it is to use BY FAR. I still have some trouble with it on low, but I've also only had the thing for a few days. I'll probably like it the more I use it, but for now I like my Motorola more, which just had a stick.

I was most impressed with the price and the hard drive size (20 GB for $200 is a fantastic deal). I got mine tax-free from www.newegg.com.

I thought I got it tax-free because I bought it online, not because I live in Texas. We still have a <i>sales</i> tax (8.25% here), just not a state income tax.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I live in CA so I pay tax on Newegg stuff, but you didn't since you live in Texas. :)

Get an IRiver or IAudio X5 or M5. I'm sorry, but Ipods are only bought that much simply because Apple spent most of their money on advertisement and not enough in the actual Ipods and help services. There are many better MP3 players out there.

I'm pretty disappointed that iPods don't officially support Ogg Vorbis format, as that's the most efficient method of music compression currently in existence that I'm aware of, and it's also the only lossy compression method that doesn't have those annoying gaps at the beginning and end of music files that cause gaps between tracks that should play continuously. (Apparently, some hackers have come up with a workaround that allows you to play Ogg files on your iPod, but using it will void your warranty).

I've got a 40GB iPod that was given to me as a gift over a year ago, and I like it quite a bit, but I'm finding that I'm frequently having to delete files off of it now because I have about 9,000 of them. I've already converted around ninety percent of my library to AAC format, which is more space-efficient than MP3 format, but I've still had to delete files since then. Now I kind of wish I had a 60GB player, and if I had a larger budget I'd probably consider getting one. Of course, most people are unlikely to spend as much of their time downloading music as I do, so this problem probably won't apply to most people in this thread.

Well, The Man, not sure if you're interested or not but on that freepay site they've got free 60 GB video Pods.

For me, I just have a 20GB Creative. Works well, has good sound quality, and is cheap. Only complaint is the touch pad, which occasionly doesnt work. Other than that, it's a great player.

Freepay? Experience has taught me that offers that purport to be free over the Internet aren't actually free. Heh. Maybe I'll look into it regardless though.

Creative is good. The first model Zen Micros, however, have a problem where the PCM slot gets detatched from the rest of the player after regular use. I have to send mine in to get fixed.

I'm probably going to look into getting an iRiver next.

actually, yeah, I'd like to know what players support .ogg format and offer more than 37GB storage, because apparently my parents are open to the idea of getting me another one from Christmas.

ya, i bought a Toshiba gigabeat 40 gig. Hard getting used to the interface. I'll keep it for a couple more days and if I cant used to it, I'll exchange it for another kind. Man, most of them are still sold out! :(

hi guys! just wanted to say thanks for the input! I returned my toshiba gigabeat and replaced it with a Creative Zen. I love it! The Toshiba just had a horrible interface, it was almost impossible to choose a track, it was ugly. I highly reccomend against getting it. This Zen is nice! You guys all rock! :)
