Me and my mum talked about this last time I visited my parents. Aparently the Japanese want to be more like European people, therefore they express it in they're biggest indistry: Animation (Anime) and Comics (Manga). This explains alot of the features used in anime. It's sort of the same as why so many european people want to get a tan. We came up with a much more indepth theory and all but I can't remember all the details......now its going to bug me for the rest of the day

There are a few anime based in other areas then Japan, this could be because they want a different location then Japan, or want to use a feature that isnt commonly found in Japan.

Generally, Europeans are more diverse in appearance than Japanese. Drawing the same basic look does get boring after awhile.

I heard this from...somewhere.It's because the japenese are peacefull people and do not want to portray themselves in violent situations,at least in video games/anime dunno about manga.
>>> LOL, All the manga and anime I have seen is about Japanese people and extreme violence.

The hair color and all that is just because they're cartoons.

I watch anime, read manga, and watch Japanese TV shows all the time. I can't even think of one that's set in another country or are about foriegn characters, other than stuff that doesn't take place in reality.

Anime on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime)

Note specifically:

The "large eyes" style

Large, saucer-like eyes are a striking and common feature of anime characters. This is mainly due to the influence of Osamu Tezuka, who was inspired by the exaggerated features of Western cartoon characters such as Betty Boop and Mickey Mouse and from Disney's Bambi. Tezuka found that large eyes allowed his characters to better express their emotions. Some Western audiences have interpreted such stylized eyes as more Caucasian. Cultural anthropologist Matt Thorn argues that Japanese animators and audiences do not perceive them as inherently more or less foreign. [1]

When he began drawing Ribbon no Kishi, the first manga specifically targeted at young girls, Tezuka further exaggerated the size of the characters' eyes. Indeed, through Ribbon no Kishi, Tezuka set a stylistic template that later shōjo artists tended to follow.

Another variation of this style is "chibi" or "super-deformed"; which usually feature huge eyes, an enlarged head, and small body.

Its rare, but it does happen. Read or Die tv series, manga, and OVA all take place in other places besides japan such as East India, New York, Washington DC, China, And the whole series focuses on a anonymous agency that is based in England.

I would say mainipulation of paper and crap like that falls too far outside of reality.

Noir is an anime that I can think of that the visit Japan once and only for a few episodes. Other than that it takes place mostly in Europe(France and Italy mostly).

Half of Noir, if not more, takes place in Paris or in the South of France. Kenshin takes place in Japan (ok, far in the past, but that's about real events that took place then). Huckleberry Finn takes place in Mississippi (ok, it's in the past too). There are more, but it's true that when it takes place "in reality", it's often an adaptation of books.

I didn't mean outside of reality as in giant mechs; I meant in location. Like most take place in Japan with their giant mechs, as opposed to Fufulalamojoland.

I haven't seen Read or Die or Noir though. Even though I have bootleg copies. Are the main characters Japanese though? That's what I was getting at. Like, Ai Yori Aoishi, for example. It's in Japan, and all the characters are Japanese, except an American chick, who just happens to be loud and obnoxious.

...Huckleberry Finn is an anime?

The three main characters of Noir are French (Mireille), "undetermined yet European" (France, Spain or Italy for Chloé), and "undetermined yet has Japanese papers/name" (Kirika).

I only know what I've seen. I don't really go out of my way and approach anime as a whole. I pretty much treat each anime series or movie as any other series or movie.

I really find Azumanga Daioh funny. It's just a random overload.

Hellsing and Chrono Crusade are some more anime/manga that take place outside of Japan.

I dunno, it's just that the Japanese people want big eyes. They want to look pretty and they think that they don't. It's that simple. *sigh* That's why my mom can't stand Anime, is because the Japanese people are trying to convey they are something they aren't.

I told her to watch Rurouni Kenshin. She might learn something.
