Questions.

How do you feel about smilies? How do you feel about emotes? Do you use them often? Have you ever made your own? What smilie do you like the best on EoFF? What smilie do you think is the worst? Any smilies you'd like to suggest for the fora and have shot down?

To give my own answers:

I dislike smilies. When I was younger, I went into a chatroom and it was full of these emotes. They were quite large and intimidating, so I felt small and intimidated. It was a busy chat, with people messaging here and there; people chatting to twelve others and those twelve believing the wrong message was the one intended for them and sending back garbled replies to make it a further mess. It was crazily confusing, so I backed up against the wall and tried to make like a flower. Unfortunately for me, I leaned up against not a wall, but an emergency exit door. Fortunately, when I fell, I caught myself and only scraped my hands. Unfortunately, these two burlesque emotes, >D~ and 6: followed me out (not falling) and proceeded to, ah, take advantage of me.

After that night, I was never the same. I avoid using emotes like the devil, for fear that they may turn on me. I have made a few of my own, but like Dr. Light, I am capable of creating things that do not tend to backfire much and #-key you like a simian. Some of them include this (http://www.akusui.net/_lynxius/flufflebash.gif), this (http://www.akusui.net/_lynxius/mkemote_jesuscrybaby.gif), and this (http://akusui.net/_lynxius/_leech/bobpimp_00.gif). I tend not to over-use them, however, once again because of my case of emotephobia.

I do like sprites, though, and the "smilies" at EoFF that I do bear a love of are http://www.eyesonff.com/forums/images/smilies/monkey.gif, http://www.eyesonff.com/forums/images/smilies/goomba.gif, and http://www.eyesonff.com/forums/images/smilies/sophia.gif.

The rest are the worst, and I'll refrain for the time being at suggesting additions.

I like smileys. They can serve as a good indication of the tone your message was supposed to be written. A message that could at first feel insulting will look much better with a smiley.

My favorite smiley would be this onehttp://img103.exs.cx/img103/7885/assassin.gif

I use them constantly, I can't help it. I quite like them, but I really really hate it when people have an emoticon for every single letter or something on msn. n___n

I prefer the text based smileys, but I do like some of the pictoral ones, like :excited: :hyper: and :grinpink:. The smileys I don't like are ones like these, :shoot: & :fencing:.

I remember asking on talkcity "why does everyone add colon pea to the end of their lines?"

Luckily I was not exposed to graphical smileys in a chat program until running the new version of their java chat, and that was for a short while compared to the nonsmiley one.

The only smiley in IM messages I can support is (@) and that's for personal reasons.

I like IRC because you don't have to worry about them turning to images. Straight up emoticons yo.

When i was in seventh grade, I had to take a Literacy Skillz class. It involved writing a journal, and since this was at the start of my irc addiction, I asked my teacher if I could use emoticons in it. And I did. Oh man.

Heheh smilies....I use them quite often depending on how stupid the situation is. My favorites are probably the hyper :hyper:,cause theres just something really creepy about it, the chunky smile :bigbiggri, it's chunky what more could you want in a smile, and of course the :jokey:. No need to explain him.....

How do you feel about smilies?
I find them okay, and a good if used in moderation.

How do you feel about emotes?
Meh, not to fond of them. I only use ones like :) and :P when I'm playing a game online and I don't have enough time to type something better.

Do you use them often?
Smilies, occasionaly. Emotes, rarely.

Have you ever made your own?
Nope.

What smilie do you like the best on EoFF?
:)

What smilie do you think is the worst?
:surprised
There are so many better ways to coney surprise.

Any smilies you'd like to suggest for the fora and have shot down?
Not that I'm aware of.

I like smilies, especially :p and :D

I dislike the new MSN ones, though. They're really awful.

Sprites can BURN AND DIE.

Hate.

Hate all IM program sprites too.

I like :<s></s>p and :<s></s>D - they just happen to turn out to be graphical smileys here on EoFF.

Perhaps my favorite smiley that will never get incorporated is :\, and I am blessed because I use that all the time. AIM incorporates :<s></s>-\, but I remove the nose and I'm golden.

I didn't use smilies until I became a CK.

I realized that a message can be delivered in a more friendly manner by adding a smilie to the end of it. So I started using them a lot. Now I use them far too much in IRC and IM.

I use them to seem friendly, kinda like Hsu, because I get afraid people will find me mean if I don't. On LJ and conversations, I use ":)" ":(" and "xD" only, really. I don't go nuts with smileys.
