I need some advice. My 12 year old girl wants to play the guitar. What do I get for a noobie player? Regular or electric? This is a subject I have no knowledge of. Thanks in advance! :)

Ummm...I would start them off with a Starter Electric, If they want to do electric.

If they want to learn guitar in general I would start them off with an acoustic

I recommend acoustic, of course, but that's because I think acoustics are better for any age or any level.

There's no need to spend a lot of money buying a Martin or a Taylor or anything like that. Just buy something pretty cheap that she can learn the chords on. A capo is also very necessary for a beginner.

But if you want to keep less noise in the house and not waste a lot of money give her an acoustic...

I ltought myself with an acoustic and I tell everyone who asks to start with one. They're easy, fairly portable, and not as loud. Plus, theyre probably cheaper, as you dont have to buy an amp, cord, etc. So go with that. You can pick up an acoustic starter kit for around $100. Usually comes with extra stings a strap gig bag, tuner, etc

It all depends on what your kid wants. Does she want to play the electric or an acoustic? Alot of people say that there are advantages to starting out with an acoustic, but none of them hold if they don't want to play an acoustic. If your daughter likes rock music, give her an electric. If she's into country, an acoustic might be better suited.

Personally I think an electric is far more well rounded. It should be totally up to her, though. If she doesn't want an acoustic, she probably wont progress with one.

But I agree with the others, starting with an acoustic is the easiest thing to do, preferably a classical one 'cause the nylon strings are easier on the fingers. They are relatively cheap too, over here I got one for about $100 NZ, which is nothing compared to other currency.

I started with an acoustic/electric. B) This might be a good way to go, because she can learn general guitar easily, and then when she gets to know a bit more, she can mess around with the electric portion without having to buy a new guitar.

Edit: I don't like B.C Riches. Yeah, they look pretty but the quality is generally shoddy.

It's probably more difficult for a 12-year-old to teach herself. I taught myself, but I also had taken 6 years of piano and 5 1/2 years of band. It was easier for me to pick up on the musical concepts.

I personally think the Ibanez GAX30 is the best n00b guitar out there, I started with it and it was brilliant. Hell, even the more experienced players (on a budget) still prefer to play it over flashier guitars.

Gibsons are pretty sexy though, I really want a gothic SG. :love:

The opinion I always have is that anybody should start with an acoustic - not an electric or a classic. There are several reasons for that - the first being that the acoustic is the hardest to play. Well, maybe you'll disagree with me, but it's harder than the electric due to how far the strings are from the neck, and it's harder the the classic for obvious reasons. The fact that it's harder to play might sound like a stupid reason for buying it, but the reasoning for this is that if you can play the acoustic, you should have no trouble if you plan on switching to an electric or even a classic. Secondly, when you're first playing the guitar, you sound terrible, and an acoustic is quieter than an electric. xD My other reason is opinionated - I think the acoustic has a much nicer sound. :)

You should find out what style your twelve-year-old wants to play in, and come back to us. Base your decisions on that - is she going to simply throw in one style and switch to another? Because if she is, buying her an acoustic or a classic before giving her an electric is not only foolish, it's a waste of money - unless she wants to play in more than one style. xD Find out what she wants to do, and post again! I'm sure there're a lot of people who know lots about guitars and will be happy to give you better advice than I was able to. :D

I think he plays a stratocaster. I saw him playing a les paul in one of their lives shows though (Aired on tv), but that may have been a one off.
