Does any one really use the gf's?
throw ought my latest game i problly only used gf's 20 times or less i only used doomtrain for the meltdown effect and ceribus for the triple or i would pull them out if i knew a big attack was comeing like mega flare or something so they would die! do you guys really use them to help win battles? i guess i just had really good junctions and never needed them!

I've not summoned a GF since my first game back in 1999, and even then it was only Shiva against Ifrit in the Fire Cavern. I only need the GFs to learn abilities and provide junction opportunities.

In the beginning I used them a lot but as the game went on your junctions really boosted you enough to the point where you could pretty much take everyone on with stregth, and of course limit breaks. Yeah, Doomtrain was pretty much the only useful one throughout' GFs contributed a lot more with their abilities than use in battle.

The only one I use is Cerberus. And even then I don't use him often. But as someone said before me I sometimes use them just to see their awsomeness.

You mean summon them? I try not to (except supportive ones) because I don't want to rely on them too much, especially when it comes to fighting "it." Well, I summon Cactuar a lot, he's my favorite.

The only summons I ever use are Cactuar and Cerberus. Even so, I rarely ever use them.

I summon and junction them all the time. Doesnt matter if Im at the start, middle or end, Ive always used them.

Yeah, I only summon Cactuar and Cerberus too. Cactuar just cause he fucking rocks, and Cerberus because he's actually useful.

The first time I played through, though, damn. I had to start over cause I used the GFs so much, and so I was really weak.

I don't use GFs either, too much trouble when I can kick their arses myself. I do summon Eden once in awhile, Eden is my favorite. That GF can do some damage, but not much compared to Lionheart.

I am also currently in the middle of the No Junction Challange. So far I have gotten to just before the party sets out to Timber for the first time, without using or junctioning GFs...which means no items during battle either. GFs are pretty useless once you get good magic to junction.

FF VIII was the 1st FF game i got and used them alot to help me when i started playing it, but as soon as i figured out the junctioning system i havent used them once.

my favorite trick is to keep Squall's life around 3000 (when his junctioned to 9999) which you can do quite early on and keep useing his Renzokuken.

i think a no junction challenge is impossible... even if you could get to the last boss in the game, how are you going to protect against hell judgement followed by whatever magic ultimecia would use...

My thoughts exactly. The game wasn't designed to be completed without junctioning.

So far it hasn't hindered me. I was able to succesfully get around the spider, and beat that thing on the Dollet Radio Tower. Selphie and her limmit break would save me against Ultemicia. Limmit-break= Full cure. That's saved me lots of times.

In the no materia challange all limmit breaks are allowed, just no junctioning. Using items after a battle, where you can w/o a junction is also allowed.

It seems, at least to me, GFs are useless once one figures out the junction system.

Can someone explain how they are useless? I use them before I would ever cast magic cause when I use magic it brings my stats down. unless you like drawing magic you'll find gf's are really handy.

Item refining is more effective than drawing magic. I find, and I'm sure many others do too, that physical attacks are more effective than GFs providing you junction correctly. The only magic I use is status-inflicting e.g. Triple, Aura and Meltdown. I don't need to worry about the magic lowering my stats as all characters have 255 naturally, including Luck.

Ahh, now THAT I do, Forest owl, I completely agree with you! I use helpfull magic, mostly Aura. I hardly ever even use Curaga or any healing magic anymore. And before I fight Ultimicia, I change the Bahamut card into 100 Megalixers.

unessassary or just pointless. i dont collect the cards. i use them to refine into items. But Megalixers are never really nessessary. Finalcetra is certainly no n00b to ffviii so i wouldnt of thought he'd need them

I summon doomtrain, for Meltdown in tough fights, kinda like I summoned Hades for Stop in FFVII (namely on Ruby)

the only reason i dont use GF's that much is because it brings down your SEED rank....my tactic for ultimecia is easy: cast triple on everybody, cast regen on everybody then triple ultima and attack ultimecia for ages and use curaga and full life when needed!

At the end of the game I found that I never used magic. I had a good seed level, and all the gf's. I liked bahamut, eden, doom train, cerberus, ifrit, deoblos (miss spelled), and many more. I don't see why you wouldn't use them. A lot of things brings down your seed level but if you can answer the questions then thats not a problem. The only time I don't really use them is when I'm on disk three and have took time to junction many things with them. Like drain on status attack so I don't have to heal as much, or meteor or something for str so I hit for 9999. Hitting for that much can be a full cure each swing.
