Leveling up

In ffx you could raise your strength, agility, defence,... by using the sphere grid.
In ffx-2, how does it work exacly? Is it when you earn EXP, and more levels? Is it when you learn abilities? Does it depend on the dressphere, for example, black mage raises magic, and warrior strength?
I'd really apreciate if someone told me.

Your base stats are affected only by your level and dressphere. I believe all the girls have the same stats for each level/dressphere. You can further affect your stats by equipping accessories and garment grids with stat boosts. There are no items that affect permanent stats.
