President Bush just signed a bill making it illegal to "post annoying Web messages or send annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity."

It was part of a bill concerning stalking and harrassment, so I guess it sorta kinda makes sense in that context maybe, but the law sounds to ridiculously vague that we could use it to try and prosecute members who flame anonymously!

It sounds nice, but I don't think it'll ever work effectively. How the hell are you supposed to enforce that? "Joe Smitty, you are under arrest for not logging in on LJ and calling someone a poophead :mad2:"

Provided it's used sensibly, this could be a wonderful thing. But using it sensibly might be a bit much for certain Americans.

PHEW! I am safe. There is no way that law would ever hold up in any court as annoying is a personal thing and can't really be defined.

In the end I think this is fake anyways.

Lindy, I think it'd be fair to know that I have alerted the Fed as to your illegal activities. They will be in your presence to speak with you shortly.

Lindy

Working backwards, if anonymous flaming is illegal, then if we fully disclose our details, can we flame people as much as we want?

Computer: The FBI is a government law enforcement agency.

Continue.

Computer: Insufficient data.

"Insufficient data"? Can't you just make an educated guess?

Computer: O... kay... Um, founded in 1492 by, uh... demons, the FBI is a crack law enforcement agency designed to... uh, I dunno, fight... aliens?

I KNEW IT!

Libel isn't, however, and coincidentally most "flaming" constitutes defamation of character. If at all any offenders happened to be prosecuted under this, it would seriously be a waste of tax-payers' money and judicial services. While crimes regarding stalking, child pornography, and child solicitation via online means should still be sought after and punished, going after a 12 year old who likes to shoot his mouth off while playing a match of Counter Strike would be stupid.

Libel is already illegal, so why bother with this?

Libel is also only for talking to OTHER people about someone. Name-calling ("flaming") to a person is not libel. Now, if I sent an email to everybody at a persons' workplace spreading nasty rumors about said person, that could constitute libel.

If it's out in public to see by everyone (like at a MB) isn't that libel?

I guess, though not at an MB like here where everyone's (mostly) anonymous. I don't think defamation of e-character is a crime.
