I've been asked to write a creative essay for a book of essays about things like philosophy, religion, sexuality etc. in video games. I've decided to write about homosexual and transgendered characters in video games. So far, I've got This wikipedia article, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay%2C_lesbian%2C_bisexual%2C_and_transgender_characters_in_video_and_computer_games) as well as what I already know about certain characters such as Kevin Smith of Killer 7, Flea from Chrono Trigger, and Eagle from Street Fighter. I'd like more, though. Any characters or situations in games that you can think of would be a big help. Thanks in advance!

...Where the hell is it implied in Killer7 that Kevin Smith is gay and/or a transsexual?

Or is there some kind of invisible albino = homosexual link going around?

In the Japanese supplimental book about Killer 7, it specifically says that Kevin Smith had to kill the man he loved.

Well %^&*ing Japanese, always getting more.

Kuja from FFIX is usually mistaken to be a girl. Cloud also famously indulges in Cross-dressing.

Colonel Volgin and Raikov from MGS3 had a relationship, and Fear Effect for the PSX was pretty much aimed at the "OMG teh charactars are LESBIAN that's so HOT!!!" market segment. Can't think of any transsexual characters, though.

Transgendered. Sexually confused. Cross-dressing. Look one way, but are another. (Flea looks like female, but is actually male.)

Transgendered. Sexually confused. Cross-dressing. Look one way, but are another. (Flea looks like female, but is actually male.)Sorry, my mistake. In that case, an obvious topic would be Samus Aran, seeing as she deceived the entire gaming population in the original Metroid.

Lindy
01-14-2006, 07:23 PM
And the manual constantly referred to Samus as a he.

Roto13

Did it really? I though they just never mentioned that she was female until the end. In that case, I can use it. (Also, the other things Black Mage 121 mentioned.)

That person in the pub in dollet in FFVIII. I forget what the conversation is exactly but I'm sure it would fit... Someone else will know what I'm talking about.

Yeah, all the rumours about Zell. Don't worry, I was planning that.

In Legend of Mana, the male "main" character is often thought to be a female character due to the way he dresses and looks, and Alex (male) and Sandra (female) are one and the same

Oh! Faris, in FF V works well.

raskerino

No I wasn't talking about Zell, he's blatantly not as he slept with the library girl. I meant this person in the dollet pub who talks to you saying something to you and you have two responses, one of which shows they're pretending to be the opposite gender- and the person actually gay- I think, I don't remember it well.

Accoring to Wikipedia:

Zell's sexuality becomes a running joke within the game, a factor often missed by players of the Americanized game because of cultural differences with Japan (see also homosexuality in Japan). Other characters drop hints indicating they believe Zell might be homosexual. Quistis (if chosen for a particular mission) makes comments on the unexpected neatness of his room. Squall often gets alarmed around Zell because he tends to get "touchy-feely" around him — in one scene, he actually whacks him on the head with his gunblade after Zell hugs him. A girl working in the Balamb Garden library has a crush on him, but he is clueless to her feelings, even though she is rather obvious about it — other librarians go so far as to organize a "committee" to get him interested in girls. The player even has the opportunity to add implications about his sexuality by claiming that his favorite color is pink. These questions are not resolved unless the player takes part in a side quest, which involves them spying on Zell as he meets with the girl who has a crush on him. At the end of the game, he is seen eating with the girl, but not paying much attention to her.

Not surprisingly, because of in-game jokes on his sexuality, Zell often appears in yaoi fanfiction. He is usually paired with Squall in this fashion as both lovers and best friends.

Yeah, it never says that Zell sleeps with the girl, and in fact he often seems pretty oblivious to her.

I never actually knew about the side quest. And I finished the game three times.

There's a whole sidequest in Shadow Hearts Covenant called the Man Festival where
the loser has to recieve "The full manhood" of the winner.
Yeah...
Joachim, the character who takes part in the man festival
has a lot of homosexual tendencies while he himself isn't gay.
This is clearly noticed when you get his male bondage armor.
Armor that emits pheromones that attract other men to the wearer.

That's off the top of my head, I'll try to remember some more.

Sendak's a disgusting old man.
But I dunno if that was translator fun or what.

I could never tell wtf was up with Sendak, was he even a man in the first place? I mean wtf. Seriously. (Hold on tighter?)

There is a dancer in Fabul (FFIV) that turns out to be a male monk if you accept his "proposal" for the dance.

Yeah I think having to do Fire Temple a second time would result in me using the disc as a frisbee.

Yeah I think having to do Fire Temple a second time would result in me using the disc as a frisbee.

Replace "Fire" with "Water" and I can see that happening.

Anyway, back on topic. Remember that it doesn't just have to be characters. Situations work, too. A scene where a character has to pretend to be of the opposite gender in order to seduce someone of the same sex works. And yes, I'm aware of the Final Fantasy VII scene.

Giga Guess
01-15-2006, 04:12 PM

Just recently, the Sims have allowedgay marriage on their games. Oh, and apparently in one of the older Sims (Tower? Copter? City?) Apparently had a disgruntled gay employee who got fired or at least reprimanded for wanting to put in homosexual references. However he got the last laugh as he put in a scene at the end with guys kissing each other. Maxis, of course, soon after issued a patch for those offended by the scene.

However how much of that is urban legend and how much isn't, I'm unsure.

[EDIT] Voldo from the Soul Calibur series seems to have some S & M themes to his get-up I suppose...

End of Disk 2. Well, at least, he was going to I think. Remember he asked Squall for his ring to give to Rinoa. And then Galbadia invaded and she fell off a cliff, and Squall had a little airbone fight with this dude on a hovercraft, and then you go and save Rinoa and land, Run to Galbadia Garden, and she gives Squall back the ring and you name Greiver. At least, that is how I remember it.

I know you might of thought of this but what about various scenes in FFX-2 examples are
-Hot springs scene Where YRP watch a couple girls swimming in the hot spring and then steal the other girls clothes
-The Leblanc Massage Mission

Hmm. The first one is a bit iffy at best, and the second one is just something to make 14-year-old boys buy games starring girls. Thanks, though.

Yeah, I know. I already put that in there. It's interesting that one of the earlier transgendered characters was a Nintendo character, since they were the ones to ban them in the first place.

I think in KOTOR there was a way -- depending on how you answered questions -- that you could have a gay relationship with an alien cat looking girl. It doesn't go very far.

http://swforums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=425778&forum=76

That's a discussion of it. Her name is Juhani and if you play right, she'll express her true feelings for the female character. (it's changed to loyalty, if you play a guy, love only for a girl. Note: I've never actually played KOTOR.)

Mukki (FFVII) is most definitely gay. Shane (Wild ARMs 3) could quite easily be mistaken for a girl.
