View Full Version : Quidditch vs Blitzball (w/ poll)

I just got Harry Potter's Quidditch World Cup for PS and the game is basicaly a 3D soccer similar to Blitzball, except that it's played flying, not swimming. IMHO even though the 2005 Quidditch engine is excellent and much more advanced than Blitzball, the game is not nearly as fun and as cool. Mostly because of 3 factors:

A Bad rule in Quidditch takes most of the fun out of it
Unlike Blitzballl which is timed, a Quidditch game only ends when someone catches a very fast small winged ball called snitch, which is worth 150 points (or 15 goals). Catching the snitch is a lot of fun and a good change of pace from the rest of the game, but waiting to find it is not. You can be winning 1,000 to zero and still you can not end the game because the darn snitch ball refuses to show up. Extremely irritating!!! I was enjoying the game a lot but after the 3rd time I had to wait for what felt like hours to end a game where my score was over 300 points all the fun turned into impatience and frustration.

IMHO the rules should be changed to make games end when one of the teams achieves 150 points (or 200 to make it more fun) so if you are just pawning the other team you can move on instead of having to play for hours on end waiting for the cursed little winged ball

It is hard to choose attacks and defense on Quidditch - not turn based
This is more a matter of taste. Quidditch is built for those action game whiz guys: All the combo moves are there but you need to have 18 fingers on each hand and the agility of a monkey to be able to play them in any deliberate fashion. Otherwise just mash the controls and pray for the best! Blitzball wasn't exactly turn based but it did give you time to think on which attack to use for each pass or tackle and for the whole team for each game interval

No scouting or trading in Quidditch. Teams are fixed
You can pick which team you will be but not individual players

The coolness factor" Quidditch has an ugly, kiddie look and feel
Blitzball water sphere is super cool, the players look good and look at least old enough to drive. The music is great. Not so for Quidditch. The stadiums look reasonable but not great. Each team's special attack rocks but all players look like 12-14 year olds with weird, blocky, out of proportion faces. And the hair of most players looks like a wig

Perhaps comparing them to the excellence of FFX or Kingdom Heart graphics is unfair but even compared to other "button mashing" games Quidditch looses. Soulcalibur and Mortal Combat had good looking characters and stages. As an example, in Soucalibur there were lovely pink cherry trees blossoming near one of the arenas and you could even see the petals falling behind the players during a fight. On Qudditch's Japan Stadium the cherry trees are blossoming too but all you see is a blurry pink mass behind the buildings

What I liked in Quidditch and would like to see in a Blitzball standalone game
- Fast paced and exciting game play (except waiting for the snitch to end a game, that s*cks)
- It makes it easy to learn and play complicated moves and a complicated game
- Very varied playing positions and score options. 3 Chasers play just like soccer and blitz, dribbling and passing a ball towards the goal, but there are also 2 "beaters" that try to knock you off with another ball, 1 seeker that chases the snitch and 1 goalie that has to defend THREE goals
- Great use of the PS2 controls it uses all 4 buttons and each one lets you do different things: dribble, pass, tackle, "beat" the player with the ball with another ball, ...
- World Cup / Olympics feel with different special attacks for each team, different spectators cheering, etc..
- Sports commentators on all games. Blitzball only had it on the first game and what he said was always the same. On Quidditch the commentators react to the way you play, i.e. they talk about your great defense or tackle, they chastise you for fumbling and loosing the ball to the other team...
- Cool team pictures and stadium details

I have also played the Quidditch game. I saw similarities to blitzball too. I agree with about everything you said except that the combo moves were pretty easy to pull off I thought.

I haven't played quidditch except off the WB!'s site thing (do they even still have that?) so I dunno about the gameplay.

But man, I saw this thread, and I seriously got confused fandomwise. I didn't realize what was wrong at first. Then it dawned on me that Quidditch is not from final fantasy. It's from a fandom I've been familiar with for far longer.

Oh dear.

I liked them both, but Quidditch eventually got much more tedious than Blitz ever got, so I prefer Blitz

Yeah, when you can't trade and develop each player you get tired of it quickly.

Plus the fact that each game has to end by finding the darn snitch... Bleargh!!!

Blitz rules, ya?
Quidditch is commercialism gone mad.

But if SE could somehow get together with EA and use their excellent Quidditch playing engine with SE superb graphics the resulting game would rock!!!

It could be a newer improved FFX Blitzball
or
A new game with mostly the same rules & mechanics as Quidditch but using "air boards" (a snow board that flies) instead of brooms and cool FFX people instead of 12 year olds with cheesy wigs (that's what the Quidditch players look like).

Blitzball, but with a much faster pace, without sacrificing strategy.
I would pre-order that one.

Soccer on the air with players ridding a magic broom.

It's on the new Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie. It is a good movie to watch, even if you have not read the series.

BTW, tell me if the Quidditch designers didn't get some inspiration from FFX's blitzball. Doesn't she look Al Bhed ?

Anyway, I'd love to see EA make a version of blitz that's a bit more ... sporty. Turn-based water polo isn't all that great. The rules don't need to be tweaked much, except maybe to allow for greater use of the 3D sphere (in the game, they are always on the same plane).

I think if you had the ability to actually play (as in not a video game), Blitz would be more fun. Mostly because the rules are a bit more fair -- in the books, the snitch is worth something like 150 points, meaning that you could have your ass handed to ya, and still win -- if you catch the snitch. That makes the first 90% of the game a waste.

I think the fatal flaw in this theory is that Qudditch was a game that had been conceptualized long before Blitzball. If anything, you'd have to say it was the other way around.

They're both overrated in their respective "worlds", but I think I'd take Blitzball over Quidditch. I like how Blitzball teams discriminate entry to the team on the grounds of race (Hello Ronso Fangs, Guado Whatchacallems and Al Bhed Psyches!) and manage to escape without a single law suit, much less a rant in various left-wing blogs. Speaking of the which, I think most blogs in Spira would be anti-Maester Mika. HE'S SO STUPID AND HE DECLARED WAR ON SIN AND HE'S SO STUPID DID I MENTION THAT?

Not race, state / country. You can see an Al Bhed in the Guado Team if you play blitz for a couple of tournaments. Just like you can see a white man running for Kenya (as if!) swimming for Kenya...

Talking about blogs in Spira...

Are you kidding ? The Quidditch rules s*ck big time!!! The snitch rule is what spoils the game IMHO. It may make reading about it fun since Potter always catches it and gets a victory for his team that is being pawned but it makes for a very annoying game play.

Play it and you will see what I mean

You may be wining by 500 point's and the darn game never ends until someone catches the golden snitch ball. I almost threw my wireless controler out the window!

The rules arent that bad, own them for some large amount of points, then, then just keep passing the ball and stuff until the snitch meter crosses the screen

Not really. In blitz you have to play a lot to get Wakka's reels and no one seems to mind because the playing each match is enjoyable, while the quidditch matches get old fast.

IMHO this is due to having to wait for the darn snitch and to not having the players evolve from match to match...

Little Blue
01-21-2006, 11:04 PM
Yes, that's what I meant. Blitzball evolved as you played, one strategy at the start may be different to a strategy hundreds of games later...

Quidditch however was static. The only rewards was cards, but tbh, winning the world cup with england took long enough to make me not bother ever playing it again... all for one card!!

I noticed. Anyway, if blitz could be modified so some rules were introduced, gameplay speeded up, and maybe made into something like Pro Evo, then Quidditch is out the window. Waiting to catch the snitch can really tick you off.

I've played both, and they both sucked. If I had to choose, I would say Blitz Ball... only because Harry Potter is lame. Though, Tidus is a whiny wuss, so I guess I just can't pick. Is there a spot on the vote for, "I just don't care" or "They both suck, bad."?

Renmiri
01-22-2006, 12:18 AM
The whiny thing worked for me. I just love a sensitive guy!

Besides, during the game you see the whining going away, as Tidus grows up right before our eyes. Compare his whining when Auron told him that Jecht was Sin in the beginning, to no whining, just acceptance when Bahamut's fayth told him that to kill Sin Tidus would have to die.

Blitzball is my favorite side quest game!

Uhmm... I hate whiny guys, I mean, I like it when the can stand up for themselves... also, I decided to quit the game early and give it to my nerdy sister. :P

Blitzball (the FMV) was nice to.

but rule wise, I go for quidditch.

One flaw I hate, notice I didn't say not like, hate about bliztball was that if I guy threw a ball and you didn't catch it, some guy way on the other side of the field could get it.

Quiditch is pretty unfair, the snitch fly's in random areas, what if it were to fly closer to one seeker than another giving an unfair advantage. Same with bludgers.
And i dont understand why a team doesnt just make thier 3 chasers fast like the seeker and get 4 people to seek for the snitch while the other 3 team members stand directly infront of the 3 goals and defend them. That way they'd have a higer chance of finding the snitch and a low chance of being scored against, and a bit of chance of getting attacked

So in conclusion I like bltizball
