Getting a list of active nicks in an IRC channel

How do I return a list of nicks in a given IRC channel? Better yet, active nicks (perhaps those only idling for # amount of time)? All I know how to use are $nick and $snick, and I don't want to have to reselect a bunch of nicks to use $snick all the time. :\
