1. All the confirmed characters are in the list on the link. Any others are purely rumoured.
2. Yes, i believe that they are mercenaries but there has been rumours that they're a summon.
3. Yes. Someone has actually posted the ending and you can view it here (http://forums.eyesonff.com/showthread.php?t=77732), if you want to ruin the experience:
