who here prefers the first generation of FF (8-16 bit graphic engine NES and SNES) or the second (Ps1 and Ps2)?
I found that the first generations (esspecially VI) take longer to clock (correct me if i'm wrong) and the second it's much easier and shorter.
I really like difficult games and the first generations were like that.
V wasn't very hard but IV was because that was the first FF game I played.
VII and VIII were quite easy. X and X-2 were the easiest games I ever played, and IX I'm just not into that one.
so... what do you prefer and what reason?
do you like good graphics, longer games, difficult games or games with a good storyline?

First generation because of the fact there is FF VI.

First generation has FFI, FFII, FFIII, FFV and FFVI.

Second generation has FFVIII, FFX, FFX-2 and FFXI.

First generation FTW!

Well, the NES version's dungeons are so long and hard... but FFII is still fun

The SNES is better, FFIII I really have not gotten into, but FFII is still fun

The PS era has FFIX... VII was half-interesting

The PS2 Era had FFX... my first FF

Well...

Old Gen:

FFI - Good.
FFII - Not as good.
FFIII - Never played T_T
FFIV - Very good <3
FFV - Meh, funny
FFVI - Masterpiece. <3

New Gen:

FFVII - Bad. Or very near that. And overrated.
FFVIII - Not as nearly as bad as VII, but still worse than most FFs. And it is overrated as well.
FFIX - Masterpiece. <3~
FFX - Okay, so this one isn't THAT bad, but Yuna... is just argh.
FFX-2 - FFX-2 does not exist. FFX-2 is an illusion of the great Hyne. Have a nice day.

So, yeah, Old Gen FTW

Second generation...
First generation might have more class, but it struggles to be as engaging (this is not having played FF6, but from FF1, 2 and 4 thats what I've found so far...)
And unless FF6 is pure godliness, i'll still say second generation.

The only first generation games I've played are FFI and FFVI. And I didn't really love either of them.

Second generation games, however....I love them loads. :D Except for FFIX.

The only first generation game I've played is FFVI, and that is topped by FFVIII, so I'll go with the second generation games. I wasn't too keen on FFX though.

Second Generation without a doubt (I'm assuming tactics is second generation as a ps1 game). My favorites are all in the second generation as I hugely prefered the stories.

Let's see...

First Gen-
FFI - It's alright.
FFII - It's pretty damn good.
FFIII - Not that great, not that bad.
FFIV - Die evil moonman!!!
FFV - I haven't progressed much, but it's great.
FFVI - Best FF yet.

Second Gen-
FFVII- Second best FF yet.
FFVIII - Eww.
FFIX - People dislike FFIX becuase they're horrible idiots. - Kawaii Ryűkishi
FFX - Story could have been better.
FFX-2 - NEXT!!!
FFXI - To be continued!

I have to say the first gen was better, but the second gen was more memorable.

First generation all the way.

Part of the reason is that I personally think that 2D beats 3D anyday of the week. 3D may have more gameplay possibilities, but 2D is better for setting a mood or sense of style. in FFVI the opera scene uses washed out black, yellows, and taned tones to create a old photographic appearence, and also uses muted colours during the performance to establish a melancholy mood. Not to mention the entire sequence was brilliantly directed and the music and lyrics are beautiful beyond description. most artists using 3D graphics and CGI try to overwhelm with funky images instead of just making a emotionally gripping scene, and only a few game designers (like hideo kojima or the team behind ico and shadow of the collossus) can use 3D to equal effect.

Other then that, FFVI's story is just the best, its gameplay is perfect with alot of variety and very epic battles, the music is the best in the series hands down, and all the FF's that came before it are almost as good as well.

2nd generation?

FFVII = alright
FFVIII = WTF
FFIX = hit me baby one more time (in a good way)
FFX = best of the 2nd gen
FFX-2 = WTF were you smoking?

2nd gen has been way too spotty in quality

And I dont consider FFXI to be applicable since its online.

FFXI definitely applies. It's main series. You can't discount it just because you don't like it.

Just because square called it FFXI doesnt make it a straight RPG. Online RPG's appeal to a completely different type of crowd then straight up regular RPG's that FF has traditionally been. therefore I really cannot group it amongst most other straight FF titles since it is based on completely different princibles and marketed to a different audiance.

improvement speaks for itself. being traditional is great, but try being a little more liberal. evolution is the reason why video-games are still full of life...
