Did you fight it in any of the other chapters besides 5?

Yes, you can fight him anytime you can dig, i.e. , since chapter 2, particularly on the Western area. Before chapter 5 all you have to do is last for a couple of turns, since it just throws you out after it gets X amount of danger. And you can pilfer a Megaelixir every time you fight him (pretty handy for Bevelle's cloister later)

Have a White Mage in your group, who knows virtually all moves. Have two dark knights, who are well trained.
Keep using darkness, and cast curaga whenever you can. Also cast Protect and Shell. Keep restoring with ethers.
Will take a while, but it took me 20 minutes to kill it.

I agree with Raph, thats the best way to go. If you use darkness it keeps his arms under. Alchemist for White Mage works good 2.
Although, once I got the Mastcot DS, I went with 3 of those. Although, I also had some Iron Dukes, which make life a little bit easier.

Mascot and Iron Duke ? Sweet!
Add "Invincible" to Iron Duke and your gal can do 10,000 points damage with each "darkness"

using a white mage makes everything easy. using 2 makes it even easier. dark knights and mascots (and possibly BMs.) are the most destructive in damage so if you have one or two WMs and one or two powerful fighters anything in the game will be easy to defeat.

hmm.. I used a completely different strategy everyone here by the looks of things...
I quickly drained all of its MP with Soul Springs, while quickly using my own (I find Samauri is best for it has poor MP but MP hungry attacks). Once I had killed the arms, I just attacked. Angra kept using osmose on me, but I had so little MP that it couldn't get more than one, so it never had enough mp to do anything else, such as full life on the arms.
This battle will take ages though. It took me an hour or so to kill it using regular attacks since I too had insufficent MP for anything useful...

I just used two dark knights and a white mage, and used darkness.

I have defeated him. Its really hard it took me 3 hours just to beat him. What i did was use paine and yuna as dark nights and rikku as a alchlemist. Keep using darkness when its paine and yuna's turn and keep mixing potion with a high potion to make a mega-potion to heal the hole group. But before you go into that battle you should go to o'aka or barkeep and stock up to 99 potions, 99 antidotes, and 99 high potions (or as much as you could afford)

Ooh, alchemist, that makes more sense.

Which is probably why she did it.
EDIT: I always spend the first few chapters whittling it down to like 1000 some HP.

I tend to miss these things. Mine took 5+ hours and a lot of ethers.

If you haven't yet beaten Angra Mainyu, it probably means you will not have Invincible, Iron Duke, Cat-Nip, or any of the items that make the game too easy. Not that it wasn't too easy enough to begin with.
Generally you can follow this strategy:
2 DKs and Alchemist, have alchemist use Stash or Mix to make Mega-Potions (potion + hi-potion = mega-potion). At the beginning, have your DKs use a light curtain, a star curtain, and a lunar curtain. this will cut most of Mainyu's attacks by half or more. At this point, it is about keeping your allies alive, until Darkness does only 500 damage. Then let your DKs die, and use a Megapheonix, and recast your items. You will once again be doing 4k damage. If you must, use megalixirs if you are afraid of death.
You will not need any status repairing items here, so don;t bother with antidotes, or eye drops. The only statuses you will have to deal with are the ones best cured by death. (Character Stat damage, such as magic down and strength down).
Replacing the Alchemist with a White Mage will also be sufficent.
Or you can do what Auron's ghost said to do.
Either of these strategies will take 2+ hours at level 45, and 5 minutes off for every couple of levels, as your stats and experience in holding down the "X" button will have radically increased. Button mashing? Why use it when you can simply HOLD the "X".
But considering as you have not yet beaten Mr. Mainyu, level until you feel unstoppable, then save, and then let your characters die so you won't feel a sense of pain when you are crushed within fifteen seconds. Then you can follow any strategy as you wish, and if necessary, set the timer to "wait", so the ATB won't run while you are choosing an option. Or leave it, if that be the case...

Dark Mage's "Darkness" is a freebie, i.e., uses 0 MP. Add Iron Duke and Invincible as accessories and you can kick it's beehind very fast with 10- 15,000 damage points per darkness. :D
There's also catnip and gunner...

If she can't even beat Mainyu, what are the chances that she will have Duke and Invincible? Highly unlikely, most people don't do end-game sidequests BEFORE the end of the game.

I beat him pretty fast. I had Rikku and Yuna as Dark Knights and Paine as an Alchemist (fast healing items). Basically I just kept nailing him with 'Darkness' then everytime someone was hurt or had a status cast on them, I'd heal them with items. Since Dark Knight already had a guard against most status', I didn't need to remedy much, mainly heal.

3 hrs? You can't have trained well. If I could beat him in 20 minutes, your levels or abilities must have been low.

They probably were. Most people are too scared of him to fight him at anything below level 50. If you beat him in 20 minutes, I have no doubt you leveled ALOT, whether it was the actual levels, or costume AP, or you happened to get the "rigged" items. Or Hero Drink. It's always good!

I beat him in less than 20 minutes on my first game. Not one of my girls was level 50.
If you keep on meeting Angra at digs since chapter 2, you go chipping away at Angra's HP (he doesn't recover) and getting yourself a nice cache of Megaelixir.
I had 45 Megaelixir pilfered from it. By the time I had the final fight the beast was almost lower than 100,000 HP. A couple of hits was all it took to bring it down.
Digging that much did kill my completion points at Djose though. The first time I fought the experiment the beast was already at level 5 :(
When I played "New Game" and went through FFX2 the second time, I almost didn't dig so it took me a looong time to beat Angra.. I was "WTF ??!?! I beat him so easily the last time ?!?" but then I remembered about the effect of battling him a lot while digging

Digging at Bikanel is excellent for leveling up and you get MegaElixir and chisel away at Angra's HP to boot!
Just make sure you don't dig up the yellow X spots. This way you will be able to complete Djose temple later.

Most people will run and not try to chip away his HP, despite the fact you will never die when fighting him before Chapter 5. And his HP does recover, if you get him down to a certain point or beyond. In the first few chapters, if you reduce his HP by 50k total, he will recover around 35k. He will promptly disappear. If you chip away his HP in Chapter 3 by another 75k, he will regenerate another 50k. After that, he will not return to fight you until his appearance in Chapter 5.
The problem is that his arms' attacks reduce your stats, which makes a long fight even longer for every second you are in it.
Your levels should be where you feel comfortable. When I first played through, I was 45, and it took me several hours. (DK, Alchemist, Trainer, don;t ask why Trainer, I was NEWB). The higher the level, the easier it is. If you want easy, just level to 70+. Challenge is for 55+. Suicide is 45 and below. I'd go for suicide.

It's probably the acessory.
And if she hasn't beaten Angra Mainyu, she probably does not have Cat Nip yet. (Level 40, Via Infinito, after beating Black Element)
Mascots are gotten by getting at least one Episode complete in all areas, except Bevelle Infinito. If you go get the Complete in Zanarkand last, however, you will NOT receive it.

Ah, that battle was the hardest one in my game. Took me a month to master that thing. I stuck with two Dark Knights and one Samurai. Darkness owned with the damage it inflicted and my Samurai alternated between her White Mage dress sphere. Once you get his health low enough, the fight seems to get much easier. I believe I was in the 70's when I beat it also, but if you fight at 99, it's much easier.

How do you get episode complete in EVERY place you cant get an complete in new yevon if you sided in youth leage and the same with the youth leage and new yevon so how do you do that to get the mascot ds????? :D
Tavrobel
02-07-2006, 08:04 PM
Actually you can get Episode completes in both areas, regardless of affiliation. If you sided with New Yevon, getting a Episode complete in the gorge (fighting your allies) results as a complete for the Mushroom Rock Road. If you allied with the Youth League, going to Bevelle and speaking to Pacce also results in the required Episode Complete. Just don't go to Zanarkand first. If you do ABSOLUTELY everything, you can get it. You need only ONE complete per area, so areas like the Mi'ihen Highroad has two; you only have to get one, Fiend Colony, or Investigation.

Wow.I beat him really easily. He was harder than vegnagun...and that's not very hard.
Of course I was at level 87 so that might have something to do with it.
Just kill the arms and ATTACK!
