Nu-metal is really crappy, but in general I like the newer kinds of metal more than thrash and heavy Metal. I don't really know what you mean by "new", but death metal is great, non-tr00 black metal is great, industrial metal is great, folk metal is great and so is symphonic metal. Although power metal and most progressive metal (I love progressive death though) is just horrible. I am aware that folk/symphonic/industrial metal are more like sub-genres of any other metal genre and should maybe not be counted as individual metal genres. Black and death metal aren't that new genres either. Meh, screw it. I don't think anything.

I wouldn't put Opeth & In Flames with Slipknot or SOAD, but I have to vote older because most of the other is just crap. Opeth & In Flames are love though.
There are certain genres that are absolutely fantastic of the second option, but sadly most of them don't get the recognition they deserve.

Wow. This is one of the stupidest threads I have ever seen about metal.

There is no such thing as standard metal, and even if there was it wouldn't be thrash metal, as "classic" metal came before thrash.

Power metal sucks? Jrgen? What =( I am saddened by that comment.

Winter's Bane
Kamelot
Edguy
Morgana Lefay
Slough Feg
Manticora
Blind Guardian
Grave Digger
Rage

and many other bands beg to differ, but if you are just going for the ty bands like Dragonforce, than by all means.

I agree with most of the rest of it, but would like to say, that "tr00" black is better than symphonic/melodic black.

Please DON'T take "classification of the bands" so seriously. I just really wanted to compare bands like MetallicA, Iron Maiden, MegadetH, Slayer, etc. (80s) with the newer bands like Opeth, In Flames, Slipknot, And SOAD.

You know, such a comparison would be quite hard as non of the newer bands you listed have anything in common.

There is some hearable power metal, but in general I just can't stand it. I particulary hate the vocals.

I'll fucking take it as seriously as I please to.

You mentioned two bands that are not even metal, Slipknot and SOAD, anyways.

Modern Metal, lol, fail.

The old stuff, The Big 4 (Metallica, Megadeth,Slayer and Anthrax), Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and legends such as WASP totally kill the crap you get these days, stuff like Poprock, boring metal, christ damn I could sleep through that stuff.

Aye, the older stuff has a lot more going for it. Talent, mainly, and the odd bit of skill.

Hah. No.

They had the honor of being some of the first (and alot are good, don't get me wrong), nothing more than that. Modern metal bands like: Solefald, Age of Silence, Alchemist, Sturmgeist, Agalloch, Mirrorthrone, Opera IX, Garden of Shadows, Lykathea Aflame, Wormed, Psycroptic, and Transcending Bizarre are more talented than most bands to have ever come out of the early metal scene. They are much more original as well.

People that slam the new metal scene know nothing of metal, as there are bands that DWARF the greatness of classics.

I've heard some of it.............and it just sounds blank.............full of nothing.....................riffs that are dark and pointless..............and I don't know they don't have the aggression and POWER that bands like MetallicA, Megadeth, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest, had:choc2:

it's all about the power behind it. There are bands these days that KILL themselves with the double bass drumming but with WEAK guitar riffs. And vocals of most newer bands these days are boring...........no force behind it........just a bunch of screaming or in some cases girly singing or both.

besides...........it's not just me................most people (poll) sided with my points....though I do respect your viewpoints, hell I like newer metal bands more than I like punk bands so it's all good. I was realy baseing the thread on the poll. So let's just rock

Death metal is more agressive than any other metal genre and newer doom metal (Totenmond and the likes) have more power (heaviness) than any thrash metal bands.

Well, I know as a fact that the only here that has ever listened to any of the bands I posted is Jrgen, and that you other idiots are teenagers stuck in a past you were never apart of. Don't get me wrong, I'm a teenager too, and I was never part of that past, but I'm not fucking stuck in it.

If you think all modern bands are as boring and powerless as say, Opeth, you don't know anything.

It aint all about power, it's about the tune, solos, skills and vocals.

Well, lets see here.

If it is about all that, than you would have to love modern metal bands ALOT more than the older ones, as most modern bands have alot more skills, varying vocal styles, and in a good amount of the sub-genres solos as well.

If you want modern bands that all over the older bands, you will look no further than:

Bloodbath: They write riffs that would make bands like Megadeth look like amatuers, and the raw strength behind the vocals on both of their albums kick's Mustaines horrible vocals.

Psycroptic: The riffs here are so varied and in large amounts that there are not even any solos, and well, that is something you learn to appreciate.

Godiva: Hah. Judas Priest, move out of the way. What this band offers are the riffs of the older metal scene but ten times better, and vocals that are even better than Rob Halford's were when he was in his prime.

Equilibrium: A band with nothing more than a demo and one full-length album, and you know what. That is all this band needed to establish themselves as better than a good damn amount of the bands to come out of the 80s. Great atmosphere, amazing guitar and drum work, skill that is unparalleled in their style of metal, and oh wait? Vocals, god. They may not seem more than typical black/death vocals, but they fit the music better than a slap across an insubordinate childs face does.

Solefald: Amazing band. If I were not trying to tell you idiots to get into modern metal and stop living in the overrated past, that would be all I would say, but I am trying to do that, so I can't end there.
What we have here is a band that creates an unparalleled feeling through the great keyboard and guitar work of the TWO members, and well the drumming isn't bad either. The music is expiremental, and so original it laughs at the rehashes of the 80s, that hadn't changed at all since they started playing. If you value good songwriting and amazingly played music, you will snap every Megadeth CD you have and buy this bands entire discography.

Vocals were better around the late 80s with the big 4. These crap modern bands arent even metal, just hard rock. If you want to get banned insulting and making crushing points at people is the way to go.

Lyrics were better in the older days of metal, nowadays a song cannot be aired if it has even a mention considered politically incorrect.

So if a band mumbles the world blah for 5 minutes with kickass guitar that's talent.

Metal is a genre of music, what do you think? Your views belong to yourself don't shove it down people's throats because it gets you nowhere.

The Old stuff obviously kills the new stuff, so you prefer singing and pointless lyrics with good music? then listen to instrumental not songs!

You should seriously stop talking about something you don't have the slightest clue about. If you only judge a band by the lyrics, you could just as well just go read a book. You should go listen to some Nile, Bloodbath or Behemoth and then explain how they are less powerful, less aggressive and less talented than your favourite thrash bands.

They're less powerful because I don't feel any kind of connection with the music, less aggressive because anger without direction is pointless, and less talented because I find the music inferior, therefore they are not particularly talented at making music I enjoy.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to jump into some sort of flame war, but if someone thinks Linkin Park is the greatest metal band ever to roam the Earth it's not like you've got anything to dispute that with but your own opinion. It galls me to hear Kurt Cobain called the greatest guitarist that ever lived, but if you go by the amount of people that enjoy his riffs over the technicality then he ranks pretty highly.
