"Most revolutionary game by Squeenix? By far. It opened the floodgates for RPGs, and drew in a larger crowd to the once nerdy RPG genre."

This post brought to my mind a question I've had for awhile, before I taint your opinions with evidence, I'll ask the question. Do you believe RPGs are the nerdiest genre? What do you think is the nerdiest genre?

Ordinary RPGs aren't that nerdy anymore. FFVII and FFX brought them into the mainstream, and so they're no longer the sole domain of the nerd. That honour now belongs to MMORPGs, which reward only the most dedicated gamers. Without trying to stereotype too much, to reach a high level in an MMORPG you have to put in a startling amount of time, and most of the people willing to do that have to be at least slightly nerdy. :p

Imported games that were only released in Japan, like Go GO Schoolgirl Mystical Tentacle Safari.

I think the genre name is "fucked up" but I could be wrong.

any weird kind of fantasy game (mainly platform) with strange items such as Portal Key or Wizard's Wand that require you to go up to your mates and say something like "Hey i can't get out of the Deadly Dragon's Cave because I'm missing the Portal Key"

I would say RPG is the nerdiest if your talking about games such as dungeons & dragons, baldurs gate, and them kind of games, but if your talking about Final Fantasy VII+, Dark Chronicle(aka dark cloud 2) Dark Cloud, star ocea, etc I don't think there that nerdy as they are extremely popular also.

Table-top RPGs. Or actual role-playing, like those guys I saw in Lincolnshire wearing tunics who I threw stale donuts at.

If that was an actual title I'd be hunting it down on ebay right now. And a PAL PS2 since I'm anti-modding.

You would think it would be MMORPGs, but having played both MMORPGs (World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI) and FPS online (Halo, Half-Life, Counterstrike) I'd say the FPS population is slightly more nerdy.

Although, an online FPS match is over relatively quick whereas MMORPGs require weeks to months to obtain those really high levels and all that cool crap...

So I guess they're about equal in degree, but it's a different kind of nerdiness.

Agreed. You have a certain, albeit small, percentage of "non-nerds" who play MMORPGs... But dating sims... :rolleyes2

Indeed Craig! That's exactly what I was thinking. It seems to me that the most anitcipated games for nerds these days, are the FPS. Online FPS are also popular amongst new school nerds. Only in select circles will people even know an RPG is coming out. It's like some kinda parallel dimensions or something!

Come to think of it, dating sims win by a mile. At least MMORPGs are social. Sort of.

Of course, if someone were to invent a Massively Multiplayer Online Dating Sim... :D

When I saw on the index that you'd replied to this thread, that was the first thing I thought of. Thanks for not letting me down!

(You should've seen the adventure that myself and Rye had on there recently with a chap calling himself "Phil Neville" who claimed to be Duncan Ferguson's cousin!)

Dating sims aren't nerdy just sad. I think stragety games like Rome: Total War (eventhough I heard it's a good game).
