Has anyone else seen this anime OVA, which is set a number of years after the events in the game?

I rented it both volumes from Blockbuster ages ago, then learned about its conenction to FFV long after I played it. I don't remember all that much... I can sort of recall the annoyingly dubbed main character bounding through the air and whatnot, and the crystal hiding inside the girl's fanny. o_0 As I runderstand, it's relatively obscure these days. Did it ever get a DVD release?

Yes, I still own the tapes. Best thing ever. Unfortunately, the company holding the license, Urban Vision, has yet ignored it for DVD release and has instead dedicated itself to releasing generic violent action crap like Bio Hunter. I doubt they'll ever get around to it, really, in which case it's a matter of waiting for their license to run out.

The only returning characters are Mid and Cid, and they're both ghosts since the story takes place 200 years after FFV. Batz, Rena, Galuf, and Faris are seen but not heard. Batz and Exdeath are both mentioned. One of the main characters, Linaly, is a descendant of Batz, and the Queen of Tycoon, who is most likely a descendant of Rena, is named Rena herself.

Those are the direct relations. However, being gentle and girly and such, Linaly is obviously meant to be parallel to Rena's role in FFV. Her buddy Pritz, who is bumbling and loudmouthed but awesome with a sword, is reminiscent of Batz. Then there's are a group of sky pirates led by a scantily-clad dominatrix named Rouge, who clearly fills in Faris's role. Finally, a hulking brute named Valkus, who commands Tycoon's flagship Iron Wing, fills in for Galuf.

The storyline goes: after the end of FFV, Cid dies of old age, which is pretty hard on Mid and the Warriors of Light. Some time thereafter, Mid goes to pray at Cid's grave, only to see it blown up by an overhead spaceship. Turns out some jerk named Ra Devil (I guess he's representing the same "boring villain names" fellowship that Exdeath came from) needs Cid's brain to figure out the mysteries of the elemental Crystals. Mid tries to resist him but, being a wuss, just ends up getting killed.

Two hundred years later, some wise old dude can tell that the wind is freaking out, so he tells his granddaughter Linaly, who, again, is descended from Batz, to go check out the Temple of the Wind. She brings along her companion Pritz and his bitchin' motorcycle, and along the way they meet some bizarre dykey air pirates who demand acquisition of said bike. Pritz basically shows them what's up and leaves their airship in the dust.

Okay, so, following some other escapades, Linaly and Pritz indeed reach the Temple of the Wind; Linaly figures out the peaceful mystical one-with-nature route inside, while Pritz just smashes his bike into the entrance hell yeah baby. They acquire the Crystal of Wind--or, more accurately, it acquires them, burrowing its way into Linaly's chest. Once in her body, it migrates to her butt, which then begins to glow hypnotically. This naturally causes Linaly to pass out, so Pritz decides to take her to the Tycoon's Blue Mage ASAP. I guess they don't have White Mages anymore? Or maybe the only White Mage around only knows Cura, which obviously can't compare to White Wind.

Anyway, Pritz barely gets out of the canyon protecting the temple before he's roadblocked by Valkus, his huge airship, and all the Tycoon soldiers aboard it. Valkus gives him total hell for damaging the temple, and they assault one another for a good bit before Rouge and the air pirate just drop a huge net on them from above. Back at the pirate base, Rouge beats the hell out of Pritz in pursuit of divining the Crystal's whereabouts, causing Valkus to fall in love with her. Figures.

Anyway, the captives are chilling in their cell when the Crystal decides to come out of Linaly, and then out of the Crystal comes the ghost of Mid. Turns out the reason the Crystal decided to hang out in Linaly's butt was because Mid is a perv like that. More importantly, though, Mid tells them the whole deal about Cid's brain and Ra Devil and how this ragtag group of warriors must acquire all four Crystals before disaster occurs. (Have you heard this one before?) Specifically, if ol' Ra is able to nab all the Crystals, combined with the knowledge decoded from Cid's brain, he'll be able to become DEATHGYUNOS, which is Latin for "huge unstoppable bad guy."

Some pirates escort Linaly away so Rouge can try to sweet talk her like a cop. Pritz makes busy trying to escape the cell while Valkus tries to sort through all these strange new feelings of his, and while all this is going on, a huge swarm of backwards-talking killer robots with chainsaw arms and laser beam eyes come looking for the Crystal in the name of Ra Devil.

While the pirates are distracted with the attack, Pritz and company escape, rescue Linaly, and eventually convince Rouge to stop being such a huge bitch. Then the Iron Wing shows up in a timely fashion to blow the hell out of what's left of the robots. Our heroes decide to go to Tycoon to seek the counsel of the Queen, and that's the end of the first half. There are still two episodes after that, and I'll have you know that some pretty enthralling stuff happens, but despite its age, it wouldn't be kosher to completely spoil such a rollicking tale.

WO-OW! It's final fantasy V but at the same time it's completley different. i'd watch it purely for the fact its related to my fave game. it sounds pretty good (not brilliant but pretty good)

sounds cool but what does OVA stand for?Original Video Animation. Basically, it's direct-to-video, the animation is of better quality than a television series but of less quality than a motion picture, and there's some freedom as to how long it is (usually thirty to forty-five minutes for one episode). They were produced constantly in the mid-eighties up through the late nineties, but not so much ever since Japan's economy got borked.
