Pick the jobs you want and the races you want... that's all there is to it.

i mean is there races that are tailored for certain jobs?

Vaprice

you can be any race and any job that you want to be. Some races excel over others, such as tarus being good mages. Galkas having most HP so they'd be a good melee job. Elvaans the same.

but you can be anything you want to be. It doesn't matter as long as you know how to make up for the things you don't have naturally.

she's wondering what would be a good mithra starting job?

Lionx

Mithra is a fine race, however it is not a job. ;o

Ouch!

Lionx, he means what's a good job for a starting Mithra.

As Vap said, there is no best. Mithra are naturally tailored THFs, though. So if you want the job that the race is actually built for, go with THF. The stats of THF and Mithra compliment each other nicely.

imo THF is the WORST job to start with in the game because you do pathetic damage and nobody wants you in the dunes from 10-15. It's a very frustrating job to start.

As far as Mithra being most fit for THF this may be true but in the end it makes very little difference honestly. It's more important to play a job that you will enjoy.

Play what ever job you want remember skill>gear>race and when i say gear i dont mean like galka running around with astrals, just be smart about what you equip

heres a quick run down of my experience with the jobs

War- tank and damage dealer, invite isnt as bad as most melees because of provoke

Mnk- all out DD, can tank but not as well as War,Pld,Nin. fun job but guarding skill is a pain in the arse

Whm- healer, i suggest starting out as this job if you want a adv job since whms are alwase needed.

Blm-fast leveling, ideal job for ppl with BNS (big number syndrome) good at makeing money but then again you spend alot on spells

Rdm- DO NOT LISTEN TO THE STRATAGY GUIDE! this is not a all around job "maybe in soloing or ballista but not in a party senario" this job will enfeelbe and heal mostly with some light nukeing/melee

Thf- utter hell to lv till lv 15 dont expect to many partys till then either, I say just grab yourself a bow and go soloing

my personal recomendation is lv whm to 30, unlock all adv jobs, then lv all those to 10ish to get a feel for them, again heres a very fast run down as i should get to class

Rng- nerfed but still fun, arrow burn

Bst-nerfed and i personaly dont like it, watch a rabbit kill another rabbit

Pld- tank par excelence

Drk- another good one for BNS patients, melee DD, stun whore

Smn- your support job will define what you do for most of your smn experience

Bard- enhancer

Drg- DD, jump is fun, not a party favorite

Nin- wasnt ment to be but Tank, enfeelber, puller

Sam- was ment to be a agressive tank but isnt, weapon skill master, keep archery capped

and heres a quick run down of what i beilive the new jobs will act as (this is just an opinion and odds are it is wrong)

Blu- im thinking like rdm but more geared towards DD instead of enhanceing

Corsair- party support, enhancer, maybe enfeebler, possibly some light dd

again this is all my opinion and should only be used as some thinking material go lv the jobs and form your own opinions

Ouch!

THF is a pretty tough job to start with, I suppose. If you want to pursue a career as a THF, I'd level WAR first. That's one of the easiest jobs to start with, and it's THF's best sub until level 24. I'd argue that it's a better sub than NIN in a lot of cases anyway. MNK also makes a decent sub through the Dunes if you want to go hand-to-hand with THF for Sneak Attack Combo.

But yeah, THFs don't get much love until level 15 when they get sneak attack. You can always solo to that level if you want to, but post 11 or 12 it really starts becoming a pain in the rear to do so and gets rather costly if you want to do it effectively.

And in response to the comment on the RDM above, I'd argue that you shouldn't melee in a party at all. We do piddly damage; it's free TP for the mob. Granted, if you throw on an en- spell corresponding to the monster's elemental weakness, you can tack on a couple extra points of damage without adding extra enmity, but there's no real pay-off to dealing such low numbers of damage. THFs don't dish out a whole lot of damage per hit (in comparison to other melees), but at least they have sneak attack and trick attack to dish out some huge numbers at least once a fight.

Then again, there's Discordion on Midgardsormr who has excalibur which has a hidden effect of dishing out something like half your HP as extra damage (so it gathers no hate). He can melee all he wants.

Discordian is also a 75PLD as well as a 75RDM.

umm mithra = thf or rdm
taru - whm blm
galka = mnk, war
hume and elven are more balanced but hume is more melee and elven are more mage.

Lionx

LOL Elvaan and Hume are nothing alike, Elvaan excel better at STR and MND but their HP are superior without gear over Hume and Mithra, however their MP is in general more inferior than Hume or Mithra. Mithra and Hume are the balanced ones, with Hume a teeny better at STR VIT CHR and Mithra a teeny bit at DEX and AGI.

However, choosing your race depending on your job or vice versa is the most retarded thing ever...:p

Any race can be any job, it's just harder to be more effective with some races. For example, Galka's have low MP, so being a BLM will be kinda hard unless they buy gear that is good enough to support their MP or something.

Just be whatever you want to be.

Taru plds are bad ass! Nothing better to watch then a taru pld tanking Byakko.
