1. I've noticed that in a few polls, information on who voted where was displayed, how does on do this?
2. What is a referral?

I have checked the FAQ for both of these and have found no answer

When you make a new topic (and poll), on the make a poll page there is an option where you specify if people can view who voted on what.

And to answer your second question:

When a new person registers at these forums, they can enter the screen name of someone that told them about the site, if anyone did. For instance, if I told a friend about this place, he could register and put RSL down in the referral box.

This doesn't really do anything, normal members can only see how many people listed them as referrals, but not who did it. An admin could find out for you and let you know if it's something that you wanted to know.

Referrals were bad when I was in high school.

Just because you refer someone to the site doesn't necessarily mean the referral number will increase.

Exactly. I've referred over 5,000 people but my referrals still say "0".
