I just tried to play a dvd on my new custom built comp but I'm told I need a dvd decoder installed. Could someone please explain this to me? It's a new experience I never encountered before. Thanks in advance! :)

I think it means that your computer cannot understand the data on the DVD, are you using a DVD player or the CD reader.

I don't know of any free solution to this. I use POWERDVD, which needs to be paid for. All you really need to do is go to google and query "Free DVD Codec" or some sort.

I can play DVDs with Media Player Classic on my machine, which is bundled with CCCP which is linked to in my sig :D Whether MPC being able to do this is dependant on something else being installed on the sytem though, I'm not entirely sure, but it won't hurt it try :p
