View Full Version : What did you think about Sailor Moon?

I have just finished watching the first season (1-40) and I liked it so far. But I want to see what other people think about it. One thing I didn't like is how they did the same stuff over and over again ,like how each of the ite's (*Jedite Malakite Zoisite and Neflite*might of spelled those wrong) would think of one way to take away energy, and do the same thing over and over, so it would get annoying and sometimes i would skip an episode. So does it keep doing that? Does it get better?

The filler episodes have a lot to do with the evil side trying to gain energy, crystals, whatever.
I suggest you watch the Japanese episodes if at all possible. The dub is a tragedy.
That being said, it's one of my favorite shows of all time. I think it's amazing.

Sailor Moon is awesome and it gets better as you continue on. The last three season are awesome.
Also the whole "-ite" thing is explained in the manga. It has to do with them being named after certain stones. *forgets the exact explanation*
TheAbominatrix
03-26-2006, 02:19 AM
The heads of the Dark Kingdom are all named after stones and metals.
Queen Metalia, the ultimate ruler of Dark Kingdom, obvious connection there.
Then Queen Beryl, and a beryl is, of course, a stone.
The four shiitenou, Kunzite, Zoicite, Nephlite, and Jadite are all named after specific stones, I believe from the same 'family' of minerals.
The four of them were once on the other side, and functioned as Prince Endymion's (Tuxedo Mask's previous incarnation) guardians, much like the four inner senshi protected Princess Selenity. Even Beryl wasnt evil to begin with.
As for the series getting better, it does, but the filler episodes never stop. In classic and the beginning of R, its a constant quest for energy. Further on in R, it's Crystal Points. Then in S, pure hearts, SuperS had Dream Mirrors, and Stars had Sailor Crystals. The enemy is always after something, and so there's a LOT of filler.

Dubs are atrocities. I've said my piece, now onto Sailor Moon.
I've not watched a great deal of it, but what parts I have seen I've generally liked quite a bit. It's good stuff, is Sailor Moon, and I could stand to have it on DVD.

No, there isnt. That rumor has been around for ages. There will be no more anime because there is no more manga. The only new stuff was the wonderful live action series, and that's done as well.

Care to point out their sources for me? It has been outright stated that there will be no new Sailormoon anime by that lovely woman who created the show. The only new Sailormoon was the live action, and that, sadly, is over and done with.
Sorry, I trust the word of the creator over the word of some obscure anime mag.

I loved Sailor Moon. I was distraught when they cancelled it over here  That was about.....hmm....must have been over 10 years ago now. They didn't even finish the series they were showing and they just up and cancelled it! Bastards  Anyhow, yeah I love Sailor Moon, it was also the first anime series I ever watched. I love all of the YYH references to Tuxedo Mask. :cat: (I'm guessing it's because Togashi married Takeuchi, or they're just being funny:p)
Edit: Well, I thought he married her during Hunter X Hunter, so...well, SM was pretty popular in Japan, I'd imagine, so a funny reference wouldn't really be out of the question :cat:

Even Beryl wasnt evil to begin with.
Wasn't Beryl in love with Endymion, therefore jealous of Princess Selenity. I assume Metallia played on this to manipulate her into attacking the Silver Millenium.
I think Beryl's love was more hinted in with the manga, though in the original Japanese anime they do show a short scene of Beryl looking jealously at Endymion and Selenity after Sailor Moon and co. finish her off.
TheAbominatrix
03-26-2006, 06:35 AM
Yeah, Beryl was... I believe a priestess. She worked at the castle on Earth, from what I remember. She was in love with Endymion, and jealous that he loved Selenity, and so when Metalia started to gather forces on Earth, Beryl was a perfect turncoat. The other people of Earth were mainly motivated out of jealousy that the people of the Moon lived so long, and they did not.
Beryl's past love was more in the manga, but the anime was pretty big on her manipulating him to be her love slave and all that.
It's a lot like the story of Adonis in Code Name: Sailor V.

chaos: I really didn't like it much. When I was young, I watched the first season (go laugh, but I was intrigued), and I have to say, it was allright. I loved Nephlite because he was just cool.
Rubedo: But after thinking back to my young days + seeing some of the new episodes, it's really, REALLY bad IMO. Maybe the American version's just messed up, but I swear, there are like five episodes a whole season in which something Important really happens.

I used to be annoyed by the fact that my sister watched it ALL the time. I'd have to get up at 6 AM before school just to tape the episodes. Over time, my tolerance of the show has increased.
The first season is the best one, in my opinion, but the future episodes are ok. Poor Neflite, just because he fell in love with a [girl from Earth], he HAD to die. By the time you get to the Flying Circus episodes with the Amazons, and Draconia, the show is a bunch of crap. Absolute CRAP. The season before that was barely tolerable. The extra Sailors past Jupiter are really so the outer planets don't get left out, except Pluto, who has power over Time, and that freaky short one from Saturn, wh0 h4s teh p0wah 10 pwnage 3v3n m7 leetsp34k.
Beryl is alot more senseless manipulation in the English TV showsthan in the Japanese manga. And isn't Zoecite a dude in the manga? What is up with that? Guess the Japanese thought the Americans were too squeamish to handle homosexuality.

This is the best anime from my childhood. I bought series 1-5 plus the 3 movies from Ebay for Ł80 for my 21st :D My fav is Sailor Mercury cause I use to pretend to be her when I was in high school. We had our own Sailor Scouts, it was so cool! The rest of the years thought we were crazy, but it was so much fun and that series will always remind us of our childhood.
Poor Neflite, just because he fell in love with a crazy white girl, he HAD to die.

He looks white, but in spirit and in origin, he was Lunarian. If I remember correctly, he was one of the original guardians who were said to have protected the princess' personal fan club, consisting of Sailors Mercury, Mars, Venus, and Jupiter. But unlike the current Sailors, the Guardians' spirits were NOT reincarnated as humans, which is why they follow Beryl.
The Summoner of Leviathan
03-26-2006, 04:58 PM
Zoecite was a dude in the anime also, it is just they change him to a girl in the dubbed.
Anyways Neflite is from Earth, as we already established he was a guardian of Prince Endymion. Though he could be from another planet like Kaitou Ace (Adonis was his real name right?), there has not been, as far as I remember, any evidence to show that Neflite is from the Moon. Also this happens solely in the anime for Neflite does not live long enough to know Molly (I forget her original name) well enough.
Yes there is a taboo against the coupling of those from the Moon and Earth. See people of the Moon live longer, thus making normal Earthlings jealous. Another reason is because those of the Silver Millenium are intrusted to guard the Earth. Princess Selenity broke this taboo, which she then paid for with her life. Well after Prince Endymion got killed, she used the sword meant to protect her to commit suicide upon. (She also died in the anime by the hands of Beryl which her actions could be seen as suicidal, but it is much more evident in the manga). Well this is all according to the manga, which has been a while since I read.

The outer senshi arent even the last of the senshi. There are about 30 (or a little bit less) who are named. And by the way, Saturn is so short because she's a child.
Yes, Zoicite is a man. Not just in the manga, but in the anime as well. Because of his feminine appearance and America's general homophobia, they made him into a girl (just meaning they gave him a female voice... ever notice how flat Zoicite is?). In the manga it isnt an issue, as Zoicite and Kunzite do not have a relationship.
Other 'changes' to avoid homosexuality in other countries include Fisheye of Amazon Trio being voiced by a girl (since he's always trying to get on guys, especially Mamoru) and Haruka and Michiru's lesbian relationship being changed to a familial one (cousins).

Zoecite was a dude in the anime also, it is just they change him to a girl in the dubbed.
Well, in the dubbed Malachite(however you spell it) and Zoecite were in love. Does that mean they were gay in the manga?
TheAbominatrix
03-26-2006, 06:34 PM
Kunzite (Malchite) and Zoicite were both men in the anime and in a homosexual relationship. Zoicite is a man in the anime, just voice by a girl in the dub to keep Westerners from freaking out. There is no relationship between them in the manga (the manga, including Sailor V, hint quite strongly at a romantic relationship between Sailorvenus and Kunzite in the past).
edit: As for Nephrite, he is indeed from the Earth and not the Moon. Adonis was from Venus.
Nephrite's relationship with Naru got him killed because he was betraying the Dark Kingdom by doing so. That and Zoicite hated him and was really just looking for a reason to off him.
edit2: Oh, and as for the shiitenou being the guardians of the Inner Senshi, no. They were the four guardians of Prince Endymion. The Inner Senshi were the guardians of Princess Selenity, and more than capable of taking care of themselves.
This misunderstanding probably comes from a very popular manga picture showing the four shiitenou holding the four Inner Senshi.

I think it's awesome, in it's original unedited form anyway. The dub is fun to watch so you can laugh at all the early 90s slang though, and for trying to cover up a still blatantly obvious lesbian relationship by making them cousins and turning it into an incestuous relationship...accidentally.

That was the most fucked over series ever. US censorship could bearly make one eppisode out of 3 or 4 shows. Everyone was gay, bi, les, or nude at least one whole show. Back then none of that was near alowable to air. They had to kill any original script to meet censorship requirements. Uranus and Neptune were changed from les to platonic loving cousins or somethin. One of them was changed to a guy. Also one of the aliens with that doom tree was changed to a girl... DAMNIT, everything was so fucked up I can't remember who was what, what loved who, and how the damn thing even passed as a posible show for kids! The manga was good though. Yeah, the chocolate parfait conversation is more or less the same. The main amusement comes from Molly's God awful voice. She's wonderful to mock.
Molly's voice is great because not only is it a Brooklyn accent on a character set in Japan, but it's a fake Brooklyn accent on a character set in Japan.
I do recall the cholotate parfait conversation in the original, but I remember it being alot more stupid and annoying in the dub, and lacking in emotional significance. Though, it's been years since I saw that episode in English, and there is the voice difference.

No, that isnt true in the least. Zoicite is a man in the anime. He was never a girl in ANY Japanese version. I have proof, and I know you dont, so please dont spread utterly ridiculous rumors.
The Japanese didnt give two whits about Zoicite and Kunzite being homosexuals. Its a recurring theme in the anime.
edit: A few facts for those of you who dont know.
Zoicite has been a male in all original versions. In the manga, in the anime, and in the live action. In the anime he is voiced by Keiichi Nanba (also note that there are NO other credits this character, only ONE voice actor, which is proof enough), the same seiyuu also voices Umino (Melvin). In the live action he is played by Yosh<i></i>ito Endoh.
Zoicite is one of the shiitenou... which roughly means 'Four Heavenly Kings'. They are something of a mirror to the four female Inner Senshi... and of course, the shiitenou are all male.
The only times Zoicite is seen as a 'female' are in various dubs for other countries. In all these, he still retains his flat chest... he's simply an extremely feminine looking man, and the dubs use the easy route and give him a female voice.
Oh, there is one instance where Zoicite appears as a female... when he dresses up as Sailormoon in order to trick Tuxedo Mask. However, he doesnt 'become' a female in the least, he just uses his feminine appearance and a pretty costume.

I got confused when you started talking about the videos from the 80s cause I thought it was only released in 1992. I really need to get some serious Sailor Moon reading done.
Zocite was always male. If you saw a version that was in Japanese where he had boobs, it was fan edited in some way. Even in the ADV set he's male.
And yes, despite what some people seem to think (probably because of the first season's animation), Sailor Moon is from the 90s, not the 80s.

I just started re-watching the first season after like...easily 10 years of not seeing a single ep. I was about five or six when the dub came on the station YTV and they played it through to the end of the second season (i think that one...with the Doom Tree?) and it was the first anime I ever watched. Two days ago I started watching subs on YouTube and found out that there are a few episodes that were never dubbed.
"I'll Punish You! The Fortune-Telling House is a Youma's Mansion!", the second episode, was never dubbed and brought over seas, so I thought the second episode was the Love Talk radio one...which is really the third.
So yeah, I really like sailor moon and it's one of (if not my all time) favourite anime shows, i'm now intrigued to find some of the manga since it sounds so much better than the subs./dubs./
EDIT: Correct me if I'm wrong but episode 4 "Usagi Teaches! How to be Slim!" was never dubbed either...or am I just unable to remember this ep?

How can Sailor Moon have existed in the 80s when Codename: Sailor V was only written in '91? To make my point clearer, the idea for the anime was birth of Codename: Sailor V which Naoko Takeuchi then expanded to give birth to BSSM. This was only in '91, therefore it is inconceivable that there was any sort of Sailor Moon stuff before this date. You cannot have stuff about Sailor Moon, before the show and manga were even conceived.

I had to check the dates on Wikipedia though...I was not too sure about when it was release though I knew it was in the 90s.

yeah, and if you compare the episodes lists, japanese, to DUB, theres a lot less, and also the DUB season 2 has different episodes in it then the japanese (83-89 i think)

MJN, you dont have one ounce of proof. Stop making stuff up.
Anyway. aisle, the episode you're asking about was dubbed, actually. Its weird what things they'll cut and why, and then they'll leave things that are just whacky. But yeah, the get fit episode was there, just butchered as always.
The dub left so much out, and it's really a shame. Especially the episode on Sailorvenus' past, which added so much depth to her character.

No, it was one of the episodes from the first season that was never dubbed, for who knows what reason. There was a scene in it where Umino flipped up Haruna's skirt, but I don't see why they couldn't have just cut that out with all the cutting they did in all the other episodes.

That was the fortune tellers house episode. I'm refering to the weight loss episode, which was dubbed. See where I said the 'get fit' episode? *points*

DMKA, that link is interesting.
The fortune teller's episode im positive was never brought here, and as Abom said the Get Fit! episode was...I guess I just don't remember it (i was 5 or 6 afterall).
There's another episode called like "Usagi plays a Cupid" that wasn't brought over here, it's got to do with a musician or something...I haven't watched the whole sub yet.
I'm on episode 6 or so now that I've begun watching the whole series over, in a subbed form on youtube...the episodes they cut were relatively good, especially the "The Perfume of Youmas! Chanellas steal love!" episode i liked alot.
Most of my friends find the names of the japanese episodes funny because they're so long, but I personally like them better than the ones they were given in the dubbed versions...anyone else dislike dubbed ep. names?
Actually, that link is far more than interesting...it's really really good, and i've now taken to crawling that page for the next 3 hours.
Oh, my mistake. I thought you were talking about that one.
Yeah, I actually still have a recording of that weight loss episode somewhere. It was indeed dubbed, and I remember them showing Molly on the exercise bike twice, the second time sped up. Yet another of the misterous edits that have no apparent reasoning behind them.

Yeah, I prefer the Japanese names. They're far superior.
The Cupid episode was cut because of Usagi using the transformation pen to sneak into a bar, even though she only orders a soda, or some sort of non-alcoholic beverage. Though, oddly enough, they left in two seperate episode where Usagi actually does get drunk, though on accident.
Man, all this talk reminds me of just how much I love this show.

That episode had absolutely nothing objectional in it. They could of easily just called the "bar" something else, like they did consantly with other things in the show.

I prefer Usagi to Serena...I don't know how they got Serena from Usagi. I also like Umino to Melvin, Mamoru(sp) to Darien etc.
I remember in the dub that the episode where Usagi meets Sailor Mercury (Ami in the dub...i've not gotten to this point in the sub) was within the first 3 or 4 episodes...but i'm on episode 6 in the sub and it's still not there yet.
All in all, i like the subs far more.
They got Serena from Serenity. It's not too much of a stretch.
What did you think about Sailor Moon?
I'd tap it.

Most 'questionable' episodes could have easily been fixed, but they chose not to. You know Im speaking from their reasons, not my point of view. I wouldnt have cut any of them.
And yes, Serena came from Serenity, which is how the Japanese pronounce Selenity. Of course, it was ridiculous that she was also Princess Serena, especially when Prince Darien didnt recognize being called Darien, but answered to Prince Darien when Beryl spoke to him. I much prefer Princess Selenity and Prince Endymion.
Anyway, Ami Mizuno is Sailormercury's name, and she's known as Amy Anderson in the dub.
Anyway, Ami Mizuno is Sailormercury's name, and she's known as Amy Anderson in the dub.
It's funny how in a Super S episode they called her "Amy Anderson" but in the S episode where Amy stops Amara and Michelle from killing Hotaru the member of the Witches 5 who held the same academic ranking as Amy (forget her name) came in and called them all by first and last name and called her "Amy Mizuno".
I think Sailor Moon is the only anime dub that was that inconsistent from episode to episode with it's own self re-written scripts. It's fascinating.
TheAbominatrix
03-29-2006, 02:16 AM
They also call her Amy Anderson in the first season... or rather, when she answers the phone when Greg calls, she says "Anderson residence".
As inconsistant as the dub is, the translated manga is even worse.

Yep. I think Mandee has all the manga we bought, but basically they would switch between names on a fairly regular basis. What bothered me the most was near the end, with the Animamates, when they called Lead Crow Red Crow instead. It just threw off the whole thing and pissed me off.
On the whole, its a fairly decent translation, ignoring the inconsistancies... and really, it was a trendsetter. Now we can buy translated manga with ease at almost all major bookstores. Mixx, as crappy a company as they were, really did us a big favor. Now I just wish we could get a better company to translate them again, hopefully with bigger pages.

I found a bittorrent of fan translated Codename Sailor V, it seems pretty well done...but I can't compare it to anything because a) i dont know any japanese, and b) i havent read any other scanlations of the manga.
There was also a complete fan translation of the Sailor Moon manga, but it was 1gb and thats almost all of my free space e.e; (damn computer sucks)...

scroll down to the manga part, it's got both...

Just because I don't have any proof doesn't mean I'm making stuff up. even if it turns out to be false in the end (I'm sure it's not but... It was years ago)
I have a habit of post memories/what I have heard/Assumed as fact with out getting proof or even checking if it's true (occasionally).
Any way we'll leave this debate for now. Whether I'm right or not I don't care anymore.

Yes, that's the one I dled. Whether or not it's the complete Codename Sailor V manga I'm not sure, but it comes with 3 volumes...which as far as I know is complete.
As for the Sailor venus episode, it's on youtube riiiiiight here:

I dont know about that file size, but it sounds right. The Sailor V scanlation (if its the same one I have) is beautiful and much better than the Mixx release of Sailormoon. I havent read any scanlation of BSSM, though.
The Venus episode is... I believe number 42 of the first season called "Sailorvenus' Past? Minako's Blighted Love!" It's a rather sad episode, and it adds a lot to her character.
edit: Yeah, there are only three volumes. When you read, watch for cameos of Sailormoon characters!
I love PGSM's Beryl. She's so... busty xD

Was the scanlation done by Grand Theft Fansub?
I've read the first 4 chapters or whatever and I already saw Usagi, which was pretty cool.
Yes, yes she is, but is still Cher in disguise.

Well I am currently watching the sub of sailor moon. The one thing I noticed in the early episodes is I like the american opening theme better. But meh, it isn't like the the japanese opening is bad, just not to my taste as much as the english opening is.
Anyways, one thing that stands out most about sailor moon in my mind is the following:
My english teacher back in 9th grade(I think, it was on Cartoon Network whenever it was) told us that he wouldn't let his daughter watch it because it was too 'revealing'. I laughed so hard inside and it still makes me smile to this day. If he thinks the dubbed sailor moon is bad, well I have stuff I could show him that would curl his hair.:choc2:

Does anyone know what band/singer does that song? I want more of their stuff.

Heck no. It's so horridly done.. I mean, after watching the whole thing in Japanese, I realized just how much they cut. That and the 'valley girl' speak... it was just awful awful.
I'm not bagging on it, mind you. Just saying I despised it. But I appreciate it for getting me into Sailormoon and hence getting me hooked on anime, for being one of the series that paved the way for having lots of anime on tv and manga in the stores, and for giving me and my friends something to quote incessantly. xD
Plus the soundtrack... now dont get me wrong, I loved the dub songs when I was a kid. But after hearing songs like Ai no Senshi, Moon Revenge, Moonlight Densetsu, and Makenai!, the dub songs just dont cut it.
Of course, I still own the cd.... xD

i've never seen the manga, but i think the artwork (like ive seen in pictures) is absolutly gorgeus. thats what made me want to see it.
i like serena's voice in the DUB in the first season, but after that she sounded really annoying.
