I dont believe it, I JUST DONT BELIEVE IT! Here everyone thought it was Tee-dus once and for all (due to Wakka saying in in KH) and here they go and screw it up again! Selphie in KH2 HAS to go and call him Tie-dus. That is just messed up, Square-Enix. That is just mean.

Sorry, but I SO prefer Tie-dus over Tee-dus. And besides, Selphie's my girl so whatever she says goes!

Maybe I should view this beneficial.....
I mean, up until Wakka actually said it, I had used Tie-dus. But then Tee-dus caught on, and I couldnt help but use it. Maybe I can go back to Tie-dus.....it still wasnt very nice of them......

His real name is "Tida" anyway. :cat: Though that is kinda weird that they'd say it another way this time...:cat:

i'll always pronounce it as Tie-dus. Tee-dus just sounds weird to me.

Well, it is a possiblity it's due to Wakka's accent he said, "Tee-dus", where it was actually, "Tie-dus", as Selphie said. Plus, we all know Wakka's an idiot, so he could've just been his slow self and pronounced it incorrectly.

TheAbominatrix
03-30-2006, 02:11 AM
Wakka in KH wasnt the only place it was said. It was also Tee-dus in a promotional video for X and somewhere else. Why the hell is Square changing what they've already said? Ridiculous.

03-30-2006, 02:13 AM
(I'm assuming) Because of romanization. It was spelled in a way that would have an english speaker mispronouncing it. And we did. So they probably just did that for us (since its what most of us are used to). I bet in the Japanese version, she pronounces his name Tee-dus

TheAbominatrix

Tee-da, actually.

But why not correct these two seperate voice actors if the pronounced it wrong? Doesnt make much sense to me.

I suppose its like the Aeris/Aerith issue, but I dont see why they'd change it from one KH game to another. Just seems silly.

What the hell is up with that face in the turn monitor thing?

Selphie and those people are just dumb. Tie-dus is what I always called him, and I recall a short-lived tv sitcom called "Tidus", and it was pronounced "tie-dus".

It's stupid for them to do that reguardless, but oh well. No more unmarked KH2 spoilers please, I don't have it yet.

Selphie says "Tidus and Wakka are waiting for us there."

I got used to Tee-dus after I was informed of the Japanese pronunciation and had heard Wakka use it in Kingdom Hearts. I'll probably just stick with that. Not that it really matters.

It's a huge spoiler to me. I didn't know Tidus was in it, much less that he converses with Selphie. Half the fun of KH is never knowing who you'll run into next, as the commercial so eliquently put it.

now that I think about it, its probably just the accent.

for example, in Drakengard 1, they say "Square Enix", in 2, they say "Square Eenix"

Yeah but it isnt just the accent. It was said by... I believe Tidus' va, you'll have to ask Kishi for sure, in a promotional video for X.

I'll keep pronouncing his name "Tee-dus" anyway. I pronounced it "Tee-dus" even before I saw the ads for FFX since Tee-dus is the Finnish way of pronouncing his name (actually, it would be more like "Tee-doos", though both ee and oo sounds are quite short), so I couldn't really care how those with English accents pronounce it. :p If I pronounced his name "Tie-dus", that means the spelling would be "Taidus" at least in Finnish. If someone says I'm supposed to use English pronouncing of their names, I still disagree since the Japanese voice actors pronounced Cloud as "Kraudo" and Sephiroth as "Sefiros" or "Sefirosu" in FFVII AC, i.e. using the way which sounds the best in their language. :)

Okay, since I feel like being mean, I am going to spoil it further: Tidus doesnt appear at all!

Anyways, how is it a big deal? I mean, it was established in the first one that they had a gang much like Sora/Riku/Kairi.

If it weren't for trailers and cover art and stuff. People would argue that knowing Sora was in the game is a spoiler as well, just one that's inevitably spoiled.

As a dumb American, I was pronouncing it Tie-dus, until Kingdom Hearts came around. Maybe subconciously that's why I don't like that game. They messed with the spelling of Aeris's name, and the pronunciation of Tidus's name. Now they're trying to undo it and win back my favor.

You are absolutely right. Square felt horrible that they upset you. I hope you guys are on good terms now.

Anyways, my situation is the exact same. It went from Tie-dus to Tee-dus, and it is all KH1's fault...

Excuse me? It's 'Tida', anyway. Unless that's how you pronounce it. :cat:

And yes, it's exceedingly retarded to just change their minds on how they want it pronounced. I don't know what's wrong with the Japanese name anyway...:cat:

They messed with the spelling of Aeris's name

No, they were trying to spell it the correct way, they weren't 'messing it up'. :cat:

Americans will say tie-dus and and the rest of the world who dont speak english will say Tee-dus..

So call it whatever you want, no one is right or wrong..

The main point here is that they changed the pronounciation from first game to sequel. Maybe it WAS Wakka's accent. Whatever. I guess it is all a matter of preference. I mean, they let you change his name in FFX for a reason.

Man, I wish you could play as Roxas more. I think he is hella cool, much cooler than Sora. His personality actually kinda identical to Sora's (He IS his nobody after all), but he looks better, dresses better, has smaller shoes, and I like his friends more (I dislike Riku and Kairi)

I said they messed with, not messed up. I'm of the opinion there is no correct way. Its just that if you slap a TH at the end, people are going to pronounce it with a lisp. Which isn't right. But regardless, they spelled it Aeris originally, they should just keep to that. Like they've told us to pronounce Tidus's name Tee-dus. They shouldn't take that back and change it in KH2. Its stupid

maybe Selphie has her own way of pronouncing his name, as like i say "Tie-dus".

Acid Raine
03-31-2006, 05:18 AM
I thought about that. Maybe they did it deliberately, as to say that there is no right way to say it, and it is of personal preference. Selphie likes Tie-dus, and Wakka likes Tee-dus. No way is right or wrong. But people these days are so big-headed and cynical that they think whatever sounds best to THEM is the right way....

Zeromus_X
03-31-2006, 05:28 AM
I think that the original, Japanese names for the characters are the proper way, because, well, they are. The creators named them those names, those are those names. If you name a child a name, you'd want everyone to call it the right name right? Your parents didn't name you a name to not be called that name, correct? (Not the best comparison, but meh. :cat: )

Of course, everyone can call it whatever the hell they want to, because it doesn't matter. It'll just be incorrect. Problems like these can be avoided if translators can, well, translate properly. I don't really understand how they can screw some of these up, even if it's a pronunciation mistake (Aerith->Aeris) or the blatantly retarded, like Tida's name in KHI, and pronounced something different in KHII. I dunno, it shouldn't be too much to ask to translate the characters' names correctly, can it? :cat:

DJZen
03-31-2006, 02:27 PM
The problem is that the only 2 people who've said his name are questionable sources. Wakka has a heavy accent, and Selphie is a crack fiend. Neither can really be expected to get a name right. :D

Acid Raine
03-31-2006, 09:28 PM
Hm....I see your point about Selphie, but I didnt know Hawaiian accents changed pronounciation of i's from short to long......
