Well, my friends, I seem to be stuck, along with my bandmates in attempting to find a name for our group. As of right now, the frontrunner, which I like, but one of my mates doesn't is: 'Don't Tell The Wife", with second place being: "Creepy Janitor" and third being "Wag Avenue". Trouble is, none of them really feel like our identity and we sort of are stuck in a rut because of it. Not musically, but in general.

We're a rock/jazz band that plays a variety ranging from original pieces to Springsteen, Billy Joel, Sinatra standards, Beatles, John Coltrane, Count Basie, Mitch Ryder, Pink Floyd, and the like.

So, essentially, I need some opinions and thoughts on band names. Do any of those listed sound like they'd work? Can you think of any better ones? If you come up with one that does, you may just get a song dedicated to you when we finally cut an album, hopefully this summer.

Take care all.

Riff Springwell's Supercake Bonanza.

Oh man, that's gold. I should use that if I make a band...

Given the style of music, I'd say that Wag Avenue seems the most appropriate name. But deciding on a good name is incredibly difficult, and you shouldn't go for anything that you're not completely happy with. The name is quite probably the first thing that people will hear about your band, and it's astonishing just how much it can shape their opinion of your music. It's all very well to come up with something snappy and humorous (Test Icicles, I'm looking at you) but if it isn't reflective of your music, then it simply seems out of place.

I don't think it's really worth me making any suggestions, since without hearing any of your music I'd merely be throwing out random ideas. However, I would suggest that you not immediately rule out 'The-' names as many people choose to. While some consider these names unimaginitive, it doesn't make them any less capable of summing up a band's style. After all, it's not as if such names were a hindrance to The Beatles or The Who, is it?

Anyway, enough rambling. Good luck with your music, Cap. :)

I like names involving exclamation points, like the following bands:
Godspeed You Black Emperor!
You Say Party! We Say Die!
iforwardrussia!

Er, but that may not be suitable for a jazz band. Call yourself 'Plane Flies Into Big Rock' or something.

kishi ftw

the best propective band name I've seen proposed, by New Yorker classical music critic Alex Ross, is Hans Pfitzner Blues Explosion.

One tried and true method is to use an obscure reference to an older song or movie. Good examples: Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Godspeed You Black Emperor, etc.

I like dont tell the wife.

How about Better Than You?

If you want to go with family themed names, what about 'My dad can beat up your dad!' It may be a mouthful, but can be shortened to the easily pronnounciable MDCBUYD!
