I don't think this riddle has anything to do with anything else. It can't be a normal character because characters are dependent on stats, the only character you can find as easily, that's within ruins is yuffie. As Wutai is classed as Wutai Ruins. and no normal character has a master.

It cannot be an ordinary weapon because 1 that is dependant on the characters stats and levels, and they change all the time. The answer needs to be a stict straight forward answer. Besides you can't look at a weapon and say oh this looks stronger than you because you don't see any weapons in great detail besides the Junon canon. And even that cant be it because it was not found in ruins, and it doesn't have a specific master.

It can't be an item because items don't look stronger or hit harder than anyone else. Not to mention there are very rarely a set of items only found in one place.

It's not a materia, it's not a main weapon.

It can't be a place because places can't look stronger than a human being. Rephrase the riddle because it's not literally correct, and makes no sense whatsoever. Unless it's a rhetorical riddle then you've really messed with our time.

It has relative connections to real-life in a weird form, and that the physical stature of the GI Nattak is closer to the answer than anything else I've said.

Right to help people out a bit, I'm going to say everything I said to LN and give you an explanation as to why I thought that, maybe it'll help you lot realise how to look within the riddle rather than what's just there.

White Materia / Holy:

This is quite easy, mostly to do with the fact that it's "there in a time of need", in the ruins of great pride. Now great pride can mean anything, it can mostly mean, the pride of the ancients, such as the temple, the city and the forest. They took pride in protecting and the city was something special, ruins but it was built on their pride. It dropped there and was left.

Weapons:

Humans dearest friend can be looked at 2 ways because of the way it's said in the poem. It can be "A humans dearest friend," hinting at someone who the humans relied on, or humans dearest friend, can be looked on as the ones who are always there in a time of need. "Humans dearest friend are always there in times of need" So, in this instance, the Weapons could be the answer although it's not because of the stature they reside in. The ruins of the planet, the ruins of what the planet takes pride in...itself perhaps?

Seto:

Seto was there to protect Cosmo Canyon in a time they needed him most. There are many ways to look at the great pride bit again in reference to Seto. The ruins could be himself, the shadow of his former self being ruined due to being petrified. It could be the ruins of what once cosmo canyon took pride in but now are weak due to lack of people to fight for them. Nanaki being the only one left. The caves being pride as the thought of Seto rushing through them and fighting off all those enemies would obviously bring some pride to Nanaki.

Gi Nattak:

The humans dearest friend could again refer to Seto, but as the ruins of great pride goes along here, it could be the fact of the Gi's big army rushing through the caves with their pride of war and ruined due to the fact they were defeated, leaving them dead, and still haunting the place because they failed in their mission.

Ifalna:

I thought about this bit carefully, think about it, Ifalna, being an ancient, does not conciously have thoughts put into the game. But imagine you were her character. If you saw humans fighting for the planet, would you be proud? Would you think they're always there in a time of need. The in ruins of great pride, that is an easy one to answer. The ancients pride was in the planet. They spoke and were one with the planet. When the lifestream continues to flow, those whose spirits have returned to the planet have new lives. As we know, Aeris says in the game that her mothers spirit has already returned to the planet, meaning she has been reborn. Therefore, the fact that the planet is in danger, and could be "in ruins" due to the panic etc, she would be living amongst the ruins of her pride.

Dyne - now I've not run this one by Lost Number :P

Dyne considers the world as worthless and evil, but then changes his mind when he changes his mind, now Barret was Dynes "dearest friend". The phrase "humans dearest friend" could also be conducted as "my dearest friend" it would just depend on if Dyne was speaking in 3rd person in the riddle. Corel Prison is the ruins of Dyne's most prize possession. His and Barrets town. He lived amongst the ruins in order to remind himself what everyone has done to it. He didn't stay the against his will remember. Because he also died in that area, his body would still remain/reside.

Sephiroth - way too obvious though.

Sephiroth classes himself as supernatural, as you see many times during the game, he calls humans traitors etc. Because they are not the cetra. The reference to always there in times of need, could actually be a sarcastic remark, or truthful depending on where about in the game you are looking. The ruins of great pride, well as you saw in the game, he claims he was a cetra, the planet was his pride but then again, it wasn't. The lifestream was. He knew that if he brought a force so powerful enough that threatened the life of the planet he'd be most powerful and cease to exist as we knew him. His pride could have been the northern cave which was caused by the "calamity of the skies"... his mother. The ruins could just be a reference to the fact that it was a wound.

Jenova:

This would basically be the same as Sephiroth, as she is with Sephiroth practically all the time. But it could be more related to her as the ruins of great pride as she was the one who caused destruction.

Elmyra - (Aeris' Foster Mother)

Now Elmyra is a completely different story. The phrase Humans dearest friend could again refer to the fact that she believes Cloud etc are doing their best in this time of need. The ruins of great pride, could be her sorrow for losing both her husband and Aeris. She would then just basically settle down and mourn for her loved ones.

Now you have to remember I look at every aspect different ways of thinking. Where as you may look at that riddle and think - simple why can't I think of what the answer is. If that is the case then you're not looking at the riddle correctly. If you can't think of an answer you're looking the wrong way, if you're getting lots of answers, then you're doing something right.

Ok, I've got a theory, it's probably wrong but it's worth a shot.

Both of these paragraphs lead me to believe that this riddle is about Holzoff.
The famous Gaia Mountain Climber.

When you need him, he is always there, especially if you end up dying of coldness in the Gaia cliff, you always mysteriously end back up at his. The ruins of great pride could be in reference to his hobby mountain climbing and the fact that he's never been able to fully do it properly, or be able to go back home.
The cannot act until you see refers to the - you cannot go any further than the mountain cabin until you go in and see Holzoff for him to give you advice. The shards of years gone can also refer to the fact he's spent many years up there (20 if I remember correctly). Dreams even desert, leads me to the fact that he's given up on his dream because of how practically impossible it was and is.

Of course, we only know all this after Cloud "sees" the video research of all these events after Aeris' death.
