I'd actually say to stay away from the Vana'diel history site. The introduction section is very good BUT! stay away from most of the detailed stuff about CoP and Zilart stuff. The author does a very poor job imo of explaining the story for one reason specifically.
YOU the player are a huge part of the story. The author tries to tell the story from a complete 3rd person perspective which DOES NOT WORK.
A nice example is early in CoP where an NPC asks you to hold onto an item that is very important to the story and then you having it is important to the story and then fact that you are able to give it to someone later is also important to the story. Now how the hell are you supposed to explain the story while omitting the fact that this very important object is held by the adventure (yourself)?
If you find yourself getting confused and want to really really understand the story I'd suggest checking out the full script over at gameFAQs. This will give you a much much deeper insight into the storyline if you really want to understand it. The story is quite amazing though many people just gloss over it.
