That's because Cloud is pronounced that way with the Japanese tongue.

Ls and Rs get screwed a lot during translations. If you look at the Motobike scene in FFVII you'll see a sign saying "Midgal".

There are a million of the Engrish mistranslations. Corneria = Cornelia, Lenna = Reina, Midgar = Midgal, they SERIOUSLY need new translators.

Midgar = Midgar?

It's all Japanese pronounciations, R's are pronounced as L's and vice versa...well really R's are a drl sound, less emphasis on the d...or something...I'm acting like I know stuff again...

Anyway, Croud is the right pronounciation of Cloud in Japan, as I imagine Rinoa = Linoa in Japan.

And DONT google Linoa unless you want to see a really ugly naked model >.<!

It's a mistranslation? I always thought it was another weird pairing between Laguna and Rinoa.

Funny, I googled both.

Linoa - 1,140
Rinoa - 11,800

Yeah, L and R are interchangeable in Japanese. By this I mean that they don't have an 'L' sound in their vocabulary, so they replace it with 'R'.

I'm sure it's Rinoa, though I'm also sure there's a Square romanization on merchandise or something...:cat:

they don't have an 'L' sound in their vocabulary, so they replace it with 'R'.It's more accurate to say that they have the same sound for Rs and Ls. The sound isn't overtly R but rather somewhere in between.

Yeah, no kidding. That would make Squall Rinoa's stepson. I mean, Rinoa is only like.....5 months older than Squall.

You know, that is a pretty racist comment right there. They dont flip-flop every l and r around.

I think 'Linoa' was the name used in the French version of the game.

What makes you say that?

Zeromus_X

Well, they 'think' it did. They didn't claim it to be true, unless they have the French version or something.

Anyway, that's a plausible explanation. Cloud's name was changed to Clad in the French version. :cat: Not that it really matters anyway...

wait, I'm confused, which is the right way? Linoa or Rinoa. But that Rinoa Laguna thing is kinda funny and... gross.

Rinoa is the accepted and 'right' way of saying her name in countries where English is the dominant language. But if you want to be technical about it, then Linoa is not actually a 'wrong' way to say it, at least I don't think so.

Besides, Rinoa sounds better to me.
