Well at first, hi there <-- first post

I just checked the FAQ Topic and so i got a question taht isn't answered there.
Well call me FF noob if this was already discussed somwhere else.

My question: I always wondered, why you can name the Ring of Squall. Some friends of mine and people in other forums say that if you collect all three occult-fan books and/or do something special you can call Griever as G.F.
I don't think you can but I still wonder.
True or just rumor?

Rumors.

Ultimecia is the only one who summons Griever

it does serve some importance at the end of the game but otherwise i dont know about that might just be a rumor?

Why do we get to name Griever? That almost seems pointless.

Doesn't it affect the end of the game? I never named him anything weird so I don't know:]

Just the name of the boss.

All the naming does is change the name of a boss later in the game.

What Griever is and why he shows up as a boss is never explained, sure he's a lion, but where'd he come from and what is his signifigance? Most think he is created by Ultimecia during the battle with the SeeDs, others believe the whole...R=U thing but neither provide substantial proof.

What I wonder is did Griever exist before Ultimecia meets Squall?

Ultimecia seems to always know Squall. That's because he's kind of involved in a time loop.

aisle_s:

I don't know what you mean with "substantial proof", but there is really only one explanation offered by the game, and that is that Griever was created by Ultimecia in the final battle. Consider what Scanning reveals about Griever:

"Griever
In Squall's mind, the strongest GF. Through Ultimecia's power, continues fighting without vanishing."

Further, Ultimecia's Witch Embodiment powers granted her the ability to reach into other's minds and pull things out (as she often displays when completely removing a character's stock of a certain type of Spell). In the case of Griever, she simply manifested the thoughts she pulled from Squall's mind regarding what he believed to be the most powerful being in existance. This would be a great strategical move on Ultimecia's part. This is made even more plausible when examining what the japanese version has Ultimecia say:

Ultimecia: Your feelings, I shall summon the most powerful of things
[from them]! The more strongly you feel, that will be what shall torment
you. Fufu."

The japanese quote there is 'substantial' enough, I would say.

As for whether or not Griever existed before this as some mythical GF, it is possible. The Griever Ultimecia created based on Squall's ideas may have in turn been based on a real GF, but there really is no way of knowing. The important thing is that the Griever WE meet, was created by Ultimecia.

So, nobody knows exactly if it's really possible to summon Griever yourself?
I still think it could be possible, 'cause only naming Griever 'cause of the last boss seems senseless to me, there must be something else.
What do you think, are the occult-fan books for? just stuff like 1/35 soldier in FFVII?

You cannot under any circumstance summon Griever. Naming him was just a way to fully demonstrate that the monster Ultimecia summoned was the one on Squalls mind.

The occult books are for summoning Doomtrain, not Griever.

Ok, thanks for that informations. now my soul can rest in peace if I die. ^^

Thanks Sir Bahamut...I really should've scanned Griever I guess :\

I didn't think you need the occult magazines to summon doomtrain. I didn't get any untill after I had doomtrain.

Sir Bahamut

That's true. What I should have said is that the Occult Books provide clues for how you can acquire Doomtrain.

I never thought there was a question as to what Griever was, it is a GF created by Ultimecia based on what Squall sees as the ultimate power. In a way it is a physical manifestation of Squall's sense of strength.

yeah it existed before Squall met Ultimecia because he told Rinoa that its the symbol of the strongest GF and I named Greiver Simba my 3rd time around and then Mufassa. Greiver is so hard, Quistis can eat him and learn his move though.

. . . Quistis learns Shockwave pulsar from Dark Matter, does she not?

Necronopticous

No, she learns it from eating Griever. She can only eat him with the "Cook" command while she is in trance, though.

Why do they let us name Griever, you ask?

So people can name him "my ass" or something like that

"I shall junction myself...unto my ass!!!"

Naming him was just a way to fully demonstrate that the monster Ultimecia summoned was the one on Squalls mind.

That's why you can name him.
And yes, you can make it say whatever you want...:rolleyes2
