View Full Version : Aeris or Aerith?

I just watched FFVII:AC the other day. And, well, I've heard a few people call the "Mother" of the movie Aeris. But then I also heard a few people call her Aerith. I'm not sure exactly what her name is, and I haven't played the actual game before, so would someone mind telling me what her real name is? I know that on my Myspace quiz "What Final Fantasy Advent Children Are You?" says Aeris, but then again...

Thanks for the read:

At the end with Kadaj? I thought he mistook Aeris's voice for Jenovas. Its said Aeris and Aerith. It depends on what the person choses. I myself have always called/wrote Aeris.

Apparently Aeris was a mistranslation of sorts, which was corrected in later games like Kingdom Hearts, but it doesn't really matter which one you use, as either is correct.

Yeah it's Aerith now, but I personally think that Aeris sounds better. But I will always refer to her as Aeris.

Yeah, that about covers it. And BTW, when Sephiroth or one of the SHM says "mother", they're refering to Jenova. Aeris is, most definantly, not Jenova. :D

They think she's Jenova. Aeris says near the end 'everyone seems to be calling me mother recently'.

Isnt "Aerith" for japan, and "Aeris" for Europe??

It doesn't matter what the spelling- In Japanese the "TH" sound will be a S sound - So "Sephiroth" is "Sephiros" - Listen to them say the name in AC in Japanese- So whether it be Aries or Aerith - It's the same ARIESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS :)

I call her Aeris, and it kinda peeves me to see people call her Aerith.

Alright, well thanks you guys. That was a lot of explaning and it really helped. But I think I'm going to stick with calling her Aries, only because it's easier to say. And I made a typo, so I do know that there is a difference between Jenova and her. Sorry for the mishab!
Thanks again;

Aerith is fine.
It may be the intended spelling, but it's confusing to the average American who hasn't played FF7 or watched AC . . . wait, I don't remember her name being mentioned in AC . . . and I watch it everyday. Her name is spelled Aerith in the credits. That's the only time her or Zack are mentioned.
Anyway, like I was saying, the American pronunciation of "TH" makes Aeris sound weird. If the sound is an "S" sound then that's how it should be spelled in America. Let the Japanese keep Aerith, but anyone in America referring to the flower girl better call her Aeris.

The Japanese use a 's' sound for 'th', so I guess that led many to believe it's Aeris. (Aerith is her official name, but it doesn't really matter unless you're an official freak like me. Either name works.)

Or mayber it's because her name in katakana is 'Earisu', either way.

"Aeris" is a mistranslation, as her name was meant to be a katakana transliteration of the word "Earth." "Aerith" is as correct as you can get, despite the fact that it technically can't exist when romanizing due to the pronunciation being "Aerisu," which is what caused the problem in the first place.

Pronouncing it as "Aerith" is retarded. If you're going to do that, just call her "Earth." I pronounce it "Aeris," personally, because that's the original translation as well as the closest American adaptation of the Japanese pronunciation.

Alternatively, you could look at Japanese merchandise of her and see the romanized word 'Aerith'.

"Aerith" has always been Square's official spelling. Her name appears as "Aeris" in the Western versions of FFVII because the game's translation was handled by Sony, who bungled quite a lot of things like that.
"Aeris" is a mistranslation, as her name was meant to be a katakana transliteration of the word "Earth."The katakana transliteration of earth is "aasu."

I prefer Aeris as well, because I don't have to use a lisp to pronounce it.

Aeris still seems a better pronunciation.

EXACTLY. People just understand that- It's spelled THAT WAY - but SOUNDS the SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS way - For the english version they put an S so you didn't have to educate yourself about Japanese language pronounciating etc.

I wouldn't give Sony any credit of genius for that translation. This guy are sick, after all.
