so, yesterday i started playing ffviii... and am right now in timber, at the mission to capture the president of galandria (something like that?). the game's been great, i specially noticed squall's personality to be so great, he doesn't give a damn about no one and wants no burdens from other people (quistis talk at the training area... he is so hurting with her, and i think she is falling for squall). this dude doesn't even shake your hand and wants nothing to do with no one (a bit like cloud i think, at the beginning of ffvii), but squall is way more selfish and antisocial. i personally think his personality is among the best of all ff characters, and i think he resembles me a bit. squall is indiferrent to zell, selphie and quistis, but i think rinoa is kind of opening his eyes... i guess i just have to keep on playing to see how it all turns out.

anyways... great character, as i said he resembles me a bit so i have this sympathy for him.-

please discuss. no spoilers!

I agree with you on most points, but there's something you said I don't like. Squall isn't anti-social; he's unsociable. He doesn't go out of his way to cause a ruckus, vandalise property, disturb the peace, etc. He chooses to distance himself from people so he won't get hurt if they leave him.

that's totally correct, got my point wrong.. that's what i thought too, he seems to distance from most things, he's very low-profile.

Squall is one moody guy. He seemed constantly annoyed by everything and everyone; he's an A-class idiot. Uh oh, I called him an idiot, but I honestly couldn't stand his egotistical whining. "Oh, sis why did you leave...blah, blah and so on." I know a lot of people who can identify with him, but I just couldn't stand him. Sorry for saying this, but I really didn't like him.

What's great about Squall's personality is a lot of people can relate to him, I know I do in some ways. He really does care though he just doesn't want to/doesn't know how to show it. He also cares what others think and even admits it to Rinoa later on (although she's uncouncious. lol, that's Squall for you.)

I can't relate to Squall at all, but I love all my main characters to be different. He and I aren't really alike and I think that makes me relate to him in a weird way, as your friends are often different then you I guess, so I didn't have any problems with him? I dunno -_-. Anyway, I was glad he's like this, and Zidane is like that, and Tidus is like this and so-on-so. His personality made this story much more interesting to me.

I love Squall because the first time I played FF8 I was a teenager and I could relate to his character. I hated hearing other peoples problems, was unsociable, very moody and I dont like to show my feelings. So yeah he was an awesome character.

FF8 was the first FF I ever played and the whole game just swept me away. It's brilliant that they made the lead character a little different from the archetypal video game hero. I like the way Squall spends plenty of time in thought which to me is more interesting than a cocky womanising guy like Zidane. With the other two Final Fantasies I've played I got the feeling that the game hero would end up getting the girl in the end anyway but this game is a little different in that respect resulting in the time that you spend on screen talking to other characters and developing relationship more interesting

TOTALLY AGREE!!! :) :thumb: Final Fantasy VIII was my 1st Final Fantasy also. Squall is who actually got me started on the Final Fantasy series, so he will always have a special place in my heart. :kaolove2: :kaolove:

What's great about Squall's personality is a lot of people can relate to him, I know I do in some ways.
More specifically, it's a lot of hardcore gamers that can relate to him. Squall is low on friends and is unwilling to socialise with others so people around him tend to think he's a really lonely guy. Sound familiar to some of you? :p Not to be mean or anything, but stereotypically speaking, gamers are sad sad sad people :D

Like someone else earlier up said, I can't really relate to Squall to much either. Maybe when I first played the game, but in the last 6-7 years, I've changed a lot as a person. I'm more of a Zidane now minus the tail and sexy mane. :eep:

I think we all relate to Squall in some way. We all are sad sometimes and exactly then, lot of us think like Squall, that friends are waste of time, they hurt you etc.

But it's not that special if you relate to him. You can relate to every charakter in every game when you think about it.

Also I think there are people who think: "Oh Squall is cool, I want to be like him!" and then they start to copy Squall's personality. Really sad thing.

Look here. That's right, here. I'm not anti-social on the Internet. But right now, you're reading a post made by a female Squall. *Shudders*

I have to say Squall's personality is what makes the game for me.

Yes, I too relate. No I'm not Squall but I sure was when I was 16. Boy am I glad I'm not 16 anymore. :D

I thought he was a plain emo ate first, depressed and detached but then i realised he was more of a angry person who likes to be on his own and not have the trouble of other people.. which is cool.

To me, Squall is the hurt type, like, in his childhood something has made him not to love or trust no-one.. cause, something might happen to them. Plus, cause of that, he doesn't want to waste his time with people.

But then along comes Rinoa and totally changes his outlook on life.

hehe, can't say I'm anything like him. I'm more Selphie or Zell.

Squall had anti-social personality disorder. It's slightly unrealistic that someone can just come out of it as quickly as he did by a person he doesn't really even know that well.:rolleyes2 And to top all off "fall in love" with them...but this is fantasy so whatcha gonna do.:monster:

Squall, in my opinion, is the best character out there, because of his personality and views on life - which are quite like my own at times, and you'll see how he changes, so very slightly, little by little!

He had a personality that I can relate to, and I can agree on his mentality. What I found strange was that the other characters still wanted to hang around him, even though he was blowing them off. I know it's a fantasy game, but still.
