Dub or Sub?

Which do you prefer? Sub has always appealed to me more because I watch foreign movies with subtitles and Ive always felt comfortable with sub then dub.

I myself prefer the AC subbed version. The english script and cast just didnt excite me as much as I thought they would. So it was a let down for me. The sub version was more fun and you didnt know what the next line was going to be till you read it.

How bout you?

Always sub, - For a foreighn film it's best to keep it in its origanal language. It ruins the effect (moreso in live action movies) but the characters faces with the words. For example, chinese movies, voice pitch goes up and facial expression increases in yelling or something and you put english over it - It just ruins it- and I don't EVEN want to hear the english for AC because Cloud's..and eveyone else's voice for that matter was PERFECT. - I heard the english in suncoast because it was playing and cringed. So SUBTITLES.

Subs in this case. While I did enjoy some of the American voice actors, overall I liked the Japanese voices a lot better.

Aerith is and always should be Maaya Sakamoto. Frankly, she should have done the English voice too. She speaks English just fine.

Honestly for me it depends on the mood I'm in. I like both, however, whenever I watch a movie that has both subs and dubs I will opt for the sub version first. For this movie in particular I really liked the voice actors for the Engilsh dub. One problem I've seen with subs in general is that they sometimes cut or shorten the dialog which is why I alway like to give both version a try.

For example in the scene with Vincent and Cloud in the ancient city look at difference in the dialog between the subs and dubs

Subtitled version:

Vincent: "The stigma. Inside our bodies, we all have a current like the Lifestream. When alien matter infests the body, this current is what fights it off. Geostigma is what happens when the body overcompensates for its unwelcomed guest."
Cloud: "Unwelcomed guest?"
Vincent: "The Sephiroth gene. Jenova's memetic legacy. Call it what you want."

Dubbed version:

Vincent: "The stigma. It's a symptom of alien matter infesting the body. The body tries to eliminate it and overcompensates. Inside our bodies is a current, like the Lifestream, that current is what fights off any malevolent intruders."
Cloud: "What do you mean by intruder?"
Vincent: "The Sephiroth gene. Jenova's memetic legacy. Call it what you want."

Not a huge change but the addition of "malevolent intruders" seems to be more "Vincenty" to me.

Or how about Denzel.

Subtitled version:

"You are dead!"

Dubbed version:

"Son of a bitch!"

And of course Cait Sith's exclamation when Red jumps up on Bahamut

Subtitled version:

"Jings, crivvens!"

Dubbed version:

"We cannae handle thes"

And finally Cloud:

Subtitled version:

"Marlene's safe. I took her home."
"It's easier now. I was ready to drag myself along until there was nothing left."

Dubbed version:

"Marlene will be safe. I took her home."
"I feel lighter. Maybe I lost some weight. All that dilly-dallying."

There's probably alot more examples I'm sure but you get the idea.

Anyway, I watch both. I am curious to know which version has the better transalation.

I could care less cause we got to see the movie. The first time I saw it the movie I had was in Japanese with no Subs. tough times...

I have not had the chance to see this movie dubbed at all, but generally when I see anime I tend to not like to hear the japanese actors vocies and would prefer dubbed. I'd probably do the same with this movie too. Subtitles piss me off kinda.

I like both. With dub you can relax and just watch the movie. With subtitles you have to read fast and kind of miss the point of watching a movie. Sometimes i watch a movie with english dubs and with english subtitles, so if i am curious about the translation, just read the bottom!

Generally, I prefer to watch both, but in AC, I prefer the Japaneese voice actors. I really don't like Kadaj's voice in the dub. They're both good, though. And Denzels "Son of a bitch!" was just great. :D

Maaya Sakamoto eh. damn I didnt realize that Aerieth's voice was one of Yoko Kano's favorite choices whenever she does a soundtrack. Almost makes me have more respect for this film.

But as for me, I KNOW I'm going to have to sit through this again since I still have friends who have been bugging me to bring the DVD I have, so I guess I'll say japanese with english subs. The acting always fits better, even though there are some english dubs that do try and give the voice acting some credability. Cowboy Bebop and Rurouni Kenshin being two of them.

I am all about subtitles. They tend to be more true to the original script so that I do not have to put up with so many changed lines or words to better fit the length that a character is speaking. That causes confusion like this:

i don't mind either. For a serious film I'd prefer to watch in the original language with subtitles. For something with much less seriousness I sometimes find dubbing a lot more entertaining than the actual comedy involved. They always seem to pick the silliest mis-matching voices

Typically, subs. I was not entirely impressed with the subtitled translation for FFVII: AC, though. Hearing the same sentence translated in two entirely different ways to match the English dub is not what I call a quality job.

Sub with made up subtitiles. Although with sub you miss some of of the characters's facial expressions.

On a side-note, may I just add that the dub completely butchered Reno's your mom joke... It wasn't nearly as funny. I'm disappointed in it severely. So disappointed I made an entire post about it.

I liked both sets of dialogue. I watched the film first in English, so I could focus on the visual detail without having to avert attention to the subtitles. The actors caught their characters emotions very well: Kadaj was fiery but immature; Tifa conveyed sensitivity but strength; Cloud was vulnerable but capable of significant strength and passion. Just three examples; they all seemed fine, to me. Interesting that they went for a deep and slightly gruff voice for Vincent, as opposed to the 'smoother' voice of the Japanese actor. Cait Sith's quasi-Welsh/Irish accent was surprising, but far better than having him sound like a hick, which was what I'd feared. There are subtleties in some of the voices that suggest careful casting - Cid's slightly southern accent (please correct me if I'm wrong, not being American) which tied in nicely with his colloquial, slightly profane language. Aerith didn't come across as completely soft-voiced and overly feminine, which could've been an easy trap to fall into - since she had a tough upbringing and a fairly hard life, I liked that she didn't sound like someone who's constantly sighing and giggling.

I've got no problems with the Japanese voices, except that, to me, Tifa's actress has a very indistinct voice - for some reason, it just doesn't stand out as unique or overly special.On a side-note, may I just add that the dub completely butchered Reno's your mom joke... So disappointed I made an entire post about it.I noticed that, too... the English version still gets the idea across, but it's not as overt. However, it seems that the English dialogue is a little 'cleaned up' - there's more profanity in the Japanese subtitles than in the English script, even from the likes of Cid and Barret.

I liked Cid and Aerith's english voices a lot better in Advent Children than I did in Kingdom Hearts, but I still found myself prefering the Japanese voices, having heard them both. I just didn't feel terribly impressed with the voice actors.

Especially Aerith. As I've said, Maaya Sakamoto. Maaya Sakamoto.

A few voices were a little off in the dub, but overall I prefer it. Normally I go for the sub, but I'm not so into the movie that I'd go through the effort of reading every line. If I pop it in, its for the bishies, and I don't feel like having to use my reading comprehension skills.

they really done a great job ^_^

the subs were good to, but the parts where entire sentances come on for like a split of a split second was no fun.

I liked the Japanese better, mostly, except for Vincent and Barret. Barret in Japanese isn't distinct enough to be sure it's him on the phone. Also, they're played by the two guys from Cowboy Bebop, the best dub I've encountered (I don't watch a lot of anime, though). I liked how there was less swearing in the English version, except when Yuffie screamed "Kusooooou!" That's like the only time in my life I liked listening to a girl swear. And I thought the deleted scene of Reno and Rude was better than their swearing in the final version. "aaaahnn" "beriiivaaboru!"

Whenever I watch anything in English I keep the subs on to compare translations. I'm weird; I put captions on non-translated stuff in English, too, even though I'm not hearing impaired.
