because I thought he deserved it and IT MIGHT ACTUALLY COME TRUE! If I roll around on the floor clutching my head after speaking out against anyone else who does that, will I deserve to win the World Cup? In that case, I daren't imagine what C. Ronaldo deserves to win.

Boring game. Neither team played especially well, and if France try playing like that against Italy, they're going to get flattened. Here's hoping that they play like they did against Brazil.

If you've done half the things Henry has done, then yeah, you would. Don't even BOTHER comparing Cronaldo to Henry -- they're not in the same league (like...metaphorically :p). That is how a man dives. Basic principle for diving: Make sure you win the foul and get away with it. :p

This is definetly the final I wanted to see. I'd like to see Zizi go out on a high not to mention also seeing the smiles of Henry. I'm liking this threesome of Zizi, TH and Ribery. They were the stars of the Brazil game and surely may be the stars of the Final.
Poor Ricardo, spare a thought for him, sublime keeping throughout the tournament, saving from three English penalties and only conceeding one goal prior to the match.
I agree with Marcel. Ronaldo couldn't care less what the crowd thought and didn't let their jeers get to him. Played his game and had a good first half.

Couldn't care less for the third placed match. Everyone seems to be disliking Portugal so for that reason I'd like/prefer to see them get the last victory. Not that I have anything against the Germans.

Nothing of the sort. I'm quite happy to admit he's a fine player, very talented and whatnot. However, this is not his only dive, it's just his latest and one of the worst and most blatent, and it's not just the fact that he dived, as Paul said this is the same thing the whiney little bitch was complaining about Barcelona doing when they beat Arsenal, they "dived like women". Thierry has said before "you people know me, I don't play like that." He's a hypocrite and a liar, and he's just as bad as the rest of them.

I can accept we didn't win on penaltys, but i'm stating the fact that after 90 mins it was 0-0, meaning the result will go down as a draw. Don't see it as sad that i'm stating a fact.

charliepanayi

The record books count for crap sometimes - though all that Portugal v England game told you is that neither side could find a way past each other for 120 minutes and it was a none too inspiring game anyway - they'd probably still be trying to score now if penalties hadn't been around. On that count, it's probably just as well both are out as neither ever turned on the style much in the World Cup.

I'm with Dan on this. Although it's gutting that we lost the match, the fact of the matter is that we did lose and we can't change that. I agree that Portugal are dirty divers, and try to manipulate the ref, but we still lost fair and square in the penalties. It's sad but true -- we're awful at penalties! :jess:

We didn't lose the match, we lost on penalties, two different things. That's the rules, i don't see how i'm deluded by stating a fact! Penaltys only count to advance teams through a draw situation in a the knock-out stage, what ever occurs after 90 mins (not really sure about extra time) is the official result.

Is that hard to understand?

Yeah Yeah France played so well that if it wasn't that goal we'd go to the penaltis! For Chris they odn't play nothing. Thiery Henry was a dessapointment to me, I thougth he'd score but he didn't do nothing. Portuguese were a bit sleeping, but still we had more ball possession and more oportunities to score!

Now I really hope Italy win France 5-0, oh I'd be the happiest woman... well 1-0 it'd be good still, but you know total humilition wouldn't be bad too!

Portugal lose but we're leaving the 2nd place with our heads high, knowing we proved that when we want we can go really far!

I can't see Ronaldo leaving Man Utd unless the Glazers can get many a pretty penny for him - something above Ģ30m would be expected considering he has four years left on his contract, has repeatedly dismissed all (unproved) claims that he wants to leave (of course, the media hardly ever publicise the fact that he says that him leaving MU is rubbish, because that woudl make them look stupid) and also the fact that he's young, highly rated throughout the world and undoubtedly talented. It would make more sense to give him Ģ10m to stay than to take less than Ģ30m to see him go. People should get over these things, although I imagine it won't happen extremely soon - maybe when Ronaldo starts scoring goals for MU again then the fans will be more receptive, but we'll have to wait and see.

I still think the whole thing is just being blown out of proportion by the media, though. If Henry had yelled at a ref after Sol Campbell got away with just a free kick after landing on Zidane's genitals, nobody would care. Blame the ref for the red card.

I mean, I admit that Ronaldo is a bit of a twat/wanker, but to say he ruined England's WC is nothing more than creating a scapegoat in him for the fact that England, quite frankly, sucked in comparison to certain other teams, and couldn't manage to defeat a single top-rated side in the tournament. 1-0 over Ecuador and a draw against Sweden are hardly world-beating side scorelines. I love Rooney to bits but he's not the be-all and end-all and I think Portugal would have won anyway.

I can't see C.Ronaldo leaving too.He is one of the best players of Manchester United, and i'm sure that the coach and the owners of the club won't let him leave that easily because the fans said so.If he is planning to leave, which is very difficult,i don't see him going to Real but Chelsea.

Loony BoB

He won't go to Chelsea because 1) Manchester United would not sell a star player to Chelsea, 2) if Ronaldo wants to leave, he'll want to leave England, not MU, and 3) Ronaldo has stated in the past that he wants to 'someday' play for Real Madrid, although not anytime soon.

If France played the way they did, they won't stand a chance in the finals. I'm not sure if they were just protecting their goal, but Zidane and Henry were virtually non-existant in the second half. Not to mention Barthez looked EXTREMELY shakey. Saha also won't be playing, and he's their one of their key substitutes.

Also, I'm not sure if this is me being biased, but that game was nowhere nearly as good as the Italy/Germany game. What a game. *swoons*

I don't think France will play that way in the finals. It was more of a get-one-goal-and-hold-on-to-it game. They were much more attacking against Brazil, and that's what I hope to see from them versus Italy. Nothing would give me more pleasure than seeing a few goals thumped past Buffon. :) Barthez did look shaky, though -- it bothers me, but it seemed to please Coupet. I hope he gets his act together.

Cz
07-06-2006, 07:22 PM
Personally I can't see France beating Italy unless they really pull out something special. The Italian defence is incredibly difficult to break down, and I don't think France have quite enough attacking strength to manage it. At the same time, the shaky French defence will have to stand up to a much improved Italian strikeforce, something which I very much doubt they'll do.

Also, I just want to say that after Scolari's tantrum following yesterday's semi, I'm glad he's not the new England manager. The guy lost fair and square, and the first thing he does is go and moan at the officials. Plus, his tactics were pretty sucky anyway, so meh.

Furthermore, I stand by my earlier Henry-is-the-greatest-guy-ever statement. I don't need to justify myself to a man who doesn't think E.T. is adorable. :p

The finals presents quite an interesting challenge. On the one hand, Italy's defense has been unreal. The only goal they've given up was an own goal to the US. (Sidenote: Should Italy win, I'm not buying the argument that the US was one of the best teams at the WC because they tied Italy. It was a great result, but seriously blown out of context in the scheme of things here). Buffon has been nothing short of spectacular and the way they won the game against Germany was inspiring. You could tell the Germans were playing for PK's, where they're undefeated, while Italy pressed to win the game and wouldn't you know it, they did. Italy does flop a bit too much for my liking, but that's the nature of the beast and they play together very well as a unit. A win would also be a nice respite to the scandals that have rocked the Italian leagues.

On the other you have France, who continue to press on despite some very up and down play. Told they were too old, and that they couldn't mesh, they came out early and played very uninspired and barely qualified out of the group play. However, somehow, somewhere, Zidane has returned to look like the player that can single-handedly win a WC and he in my opinion is the wild card. If Zidane plays like he did against Brazil or even the first half against Portugal, before France began to play back and not attack, I think France has a shot, a legit shot. Zidane is that rare talent that controls the flow of the game and as was witnessed both in 98 and in this WC, he can will the French to victory.

I look for a close contest with plenty of fouls, which is one of the major storylines of this World Cup and in the end, somehow, someway, I see Zidane riding off into the sunset leading his team and his country to one final victory. Italy will be very tough, but if Henry, Ribary and the rest of the midfield can keep it together, I do think Zidane can lead them one more time. If Italy finds a way to bottle Zizou however, Italy will win this in a walk. Still, much like the Mavs had the superior team in the NBA Finals, the Heat with the single best player in Wade, won. So too, do I think will fall in this game, with Zidane. A great way to end a great career, I think.

In the third place game, I think Germany wins it IF Klose and Ballack can play. I've read both are hurt and might not be able to suit up, Klose especially, but if they do, I think Germany wins it.

Take care all.

I can't see Ronaldo leaving Man Utd unless the Glazers can get many a pretty penny for him - something above Ģ30mĢ30m? You're having a laugh. I'd say Ģ18m is a realistic evaluation. Even Chelsea don't pay over Ģ30m, and Real no longer do that kind of thing either. If it were 2000 or so, I think you might've got around Ģ30m, but not these days.

As it happens, I don't think anybody wants C. Ronaldo, now that the Real President has said that he's after Robben, so I'd bet a lot of money on Ronaldo lining up in a red shirt at Old Trafford next season.

I'm glad Portugal lost the way they did. All they do is dive and complain and bitch. As a defensive player, I know how annoying it is when people dive. (I get a second yellow yesterday for "elbowing someone in the eye" while my hands are behind my back, and two seconds later he gets up fine.) Yeah that was a weak penalty called by larrionda. It WAS a trip though and Henry went down easy. Now Portugal knows how it feels. Then later you see Ronaldo and Pauletta just flopping in the box. When Miguel got injured, no one cared that he was hurt, they were yelling at the ref for a foul. This is probably the worst dive by ronaldo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu9PWsF0CL0&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fihateronaldo%2Ecom%2F my friend stilll thinks that it is a penalty and Portugal got jipped, which they didnt because they had golden oppurtinies and they didnt score. Screw those divers.

GO GERMANY
GO France

I was originally rooting for USA because i was born and raised here but I'm 75% French so I'm allowed to go nuts if they win. (The other 25% is Canadian, but Canada sucks)

The video response to that one is fantastic for it's choice of music. :D

Also, nobody is talking badly about the Portuguese fans, just the team and the manager, which is perfectly acceptable.

Diving is indeed something that all parties are guilty of, it just happens that the Portugal team made a much bigger habit of it than any other side.

Well I heard there was alot of chaos after Portugal lost, so that's that down the drain, who's the "hooligan" now? Btw, is that all foreigners can say to insult british people? I don't even drink yet! There is no sweet little angel team in the world cup, never was, it has been said that the England fans have been some of the calmest and less commotional but that doesn't mean they didn't riot, some did some didn't, just not as many as usual. Well why do you think Chelsea have a few portugeuse players in their weapons, they're diving experts, poor Man U have to deal with Ronaldo's antics too, he always does it, I don't mean to be horrible here but it was noticable in the first vs Newcastle game and the Chelsea games and many more last season. I think Portugal should register these useless divers for Olympic diving, man they'd take the gold. Any anti-Man U fan should correct me on their dives and divers.

I'm not going to get into club stuff because this thread and topic has nothing to do with clubs. So, speaking of the international game...

Denying that England fans have, over many years, earned themselves the worst reputation in football fan terms is silly. To say that all other nations have perfect fans would also be silly, though. All major footballing nations have their troublemakers.

FIFA's ULTIMATE SQUAD (TM!!!!!) of World Cup 2006

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Jens Lehmann (Germany), Ricardo (Portugal).

Defenders: Roberto Ayala (Argentina), John Terry (England), Lilian Thuram (France), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Fabio Cannavaro (Italy), Gianluca Zambrotta (Italy), Ricardo Carvalho (Portugal).

Midfielders: Ze Roberto (Brazil), Patrick Vieira (France), Zinedine Zidane (France), Michael Ballack (Germany), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), Gennaro Gattuso (Italy), Luis Figo (Portugal), Maniche (Portugal).

Strikers: Hernan Crespo (Argentina), Thierry Henry (France), Miroslav Klose (Germany), Francesco Totti (Italy), Luca Toni (Italy).

Ayala? Terry? Thuram? Ze Roberto? Toni?

Where's Marquez or Zinha? No place for Valencia? What about Robben or Van Persie? Surely Owen Hargreaves and Joe Cole have made a greater impact than Ze Roberto? Riquelme, Cambiasso and Maxi Rodriguez didn't impress you, FIFA? Why no Essien, or Muntari? Lukas Podolski, anyone? Even the likes of Srna, Kalinichenko, Edwards and Cahill have made the World Cup more memorable than some of this lot. Heck, even Ronaldo is more worthy than Toni, Crespo or Henry.

The board are forcing fergie to sell Ronaldo, there will be too much chaos if a sort fewd between him and Rooney starts and then England fans's hatred towards Ronaldo wouldn't do too well for the club's reputation man. What a lovely game. :D Those two goals from Schweinsteiger (JESUS CHRIST I SPELT THAT RIGHT...!!) were amazing. Seriously beautiful strikes, both of them, and so well placed. :D Ah, they made me happy.

A great game for Oliver Kahn, too. He made some spectacular saves, and he needn't be ashamed of letting that one in, because it was a great cross from Figo and a great header from Nuno in. I wish Figo had gotten a goal -- he's one Portugese player I really, really, really like. A bit of a sad international ending for him.

Also gotta admire Cronnie's persistance and determination; kept going at it till the very end, shooting at goal and going forwards.

I find it interesting that even the French and German fans have booed C. Ronaldo, showing that it isn't just the English who think what he did was wrong. If FIFA refuse to punish divers and cheats, then it's good to see the fans taking things into their own hands.

Good game, Germany deserved to win after putting on an impressive tournament, and performing admirably too. It was good to see Kahn and Figo performing well in their last hurrah. What the heck is wrong with Martin O'Neill? He said Portugal haven't played the last two major tournaments without a striker.
Hard luck on Portugal who did well in my estimations to get to the semis, Germany hosted a good tournament and deserved to get something out of it.

Why is everyone being so hostile on Cristiano Ronaldo? I'm sure most of these speculations is down to the Rooney getting sent off, but surely stepping on someone's groin is worse than what he did

I don't understand why English fans "hate" Ronaldo right now! As I said, it's not just the English fans, because French and German fans booed him too.

But so we don't go over this issue again, I'll summarise:

Anti-Ronaldo: He's a diving, faking cheat who tried to get another player sent off in business that did not concern him (It was between Carvalho, Rooney and the referee only, nobody else) and then winked and smirked about it;
Pro-Ronaldo: He was just trying to defend his team-mates, and what Rooney did was wrong, diving and simulation are a natural part of the game and everyone does it - even the English (Gerrard v Hungary or Owen v Argentina in WC2002, anyone? And that's to say nothing of Joe Cole...)

There, that saves us all the bother of dragging this back up again.

I don't know what happened with Zidane but apparently no one likes Italy anymore. He headbutted one of the Italian players - after a lot of arguing he was finally sent off. It was the right decision though, was moment of madness from Zidane.Thank you Captain Obvious! :rolleyes2 I'm trying to figure out why the entire stadium was booing Italy on every touch they made if the foul clearly was Zidane's fault (which it was). It doesn't make sense.

In any case, Zidane can thank himself for his team bowing out in the Finals rather ungracefully. Trezeguet too, for that matter. Congrats to Italy for hanging in there despite being fatigued as hell. Once again, they show us that flashy playmakers are secondary, and all that matters is your back four.

What was going through Zidane's head? He was the best player on the pitch, and it was his last game of competitive football ever, why go and ruin it with a moment of stupidity like that? For such a magnificent player, maybe the best of his generation, to leave the world stage in such a fashion is a terrible shame, and I hope it's not how he's remembered.

Well done to Italy for overcoming the pressure and taking an excellent set of penalties. Much as I would've liked Daniele De Rossi to slip over the ball and fall on his arse like a toddler, each and every one of them got the job done when it mattered, and that has to be acknowledged. They weren't the best team on the day, and barely left their own half of the field after half-time. Nor were they the best team in the tournament, having faced fairly weak opposition up until Germany in the semis. But that's one of the things that's so great about football; that the best team doesn't always win. So congratulations to Italy (and, for that matter, Doomie), and lets hope a few of those World Cup winners come to the Premiership next season.

Italy started off brightly, but it was a shame that they deflated, really. It wasn't a bad game, but it wasn't an excellent one either.

I still can't believe our old Diarra played in a World Cup final. Christ, he was terrible in the reserves.

Granted, whatever happened -- it was a class headbutt and Figo's had nothing on it.

Bah. I don't think Italy deserved to win it on account of their offence; their defence, however, seemed impregnable. France played some real beautiful football in both the second half and extra time until the red card -- their domination of the ball especially in the midfield area was class.

Penalties were well taken -- Trezeguet missing, huh. What was he trying to do? A Zidane?! But note how Buffon didn't make a single save. :( So much for that, buffoon.

It was a really tragic end for someone who was perhaps the most hyped up player before match. Henry didn't magic anything up tonight either, which probably explains why he was substituted. I still thought it was pretty silly move by Domenech, though.

But Malouda, fuck, what a game. Whatever happened to France tonight, they've certainly discovered a few things that might help them in the future :p Ribery and Malouda and more? And it was pretty good, considering people had written them off in the first round. It showed true grit, and congrats Italians. :p

Cristiano Ronaldo will probably get off the hook (well everywhere apart from England). Zizi muffed up a classic finish to his career, disgraceful. I kinda switched sides after that little incident and supported Italy in the shoot-out. I'm happy for the tifosi since they've seen so many tournaments end up in an upsetting way.
I think Thuram and Cannavaro were the outstanding players on the field. I also thought De Rossi shouldn't have even been allowed on the field after his violent group stage antics

In a word, WOW.

I'm still at a complete loss for what Zidane did. I cannot think of a worse decision to have been made, in OT, when they were outplaying Italy no less, and then, he loses it completely and for many will completely tarnish what was a glorious run and a spectacular career. Sure, it's the heat of the moment and one can act on impulses, but as the Captain of the team, as it's leader, best player, and possibly best player of his generation, Zidane lost it. It would be the equivelent of a Derek Jeter or Tom Brady losing their cool in the World Series or Super Bowl, and once he got sent off, France really had little chance. The missed PK was killer sure, but losing Zidane, and Henry sealed their fate.

Bravo to Italy, especially to it's defense, and goalkeeper Buffon. The save he made on Zidane in the first OT was nothing short of immaculate. Bravo to Italy for winning in the face of all the turmoil back home, bravo to Italy for finally getting the monkey off their backs and winning a PK.

What's so bizarre is that they seemed like the lesser team, especially late in the second half and OT, as France seemed to continue to press the issue, but they bent and didn't break. In the end, they were the team that was able to keep it together, keep their cool, and win.

This match will be talked about for a long time, mostly about Zidane's mindless act, but it should also be remembered as a great victory for Italy.

Take care all.

And now for some faultless logic:

- Italy are World Champions.
- France held them for 120 minutes in the final, and lost on penalties, ergo they are second best in the world.
- USA held Italy for 90 minutes, but everyone knows they are crap so this fact can be classed as a statistical abberation and can be safely discarded.
- Australia held Italy for 93 mins and 45 seconds, and only lost becuase of a dubious penalty, but Australia lost to Brazil earlier in the tournament.
- The above are the three best performances against Italy at the World Cup.

Therefore, we can establish without a shadow of a doubt that the top four teams in the World are...
1. Italy
2. France
3. Brazil
4. Australia.

Excuse me, but did you watch any of Italy's games? The perfect example was in Germany vs France; Ballack runs for the ball, facing Totti. What does Totti do? Try and get the ball or go into the duel? Nope, he literally jumps up into the air at Ballack, crashes into him, and falls down screaming.

On the other side, you never ever see Zidane at all screaming for penalty or cards or anything, even after falling in the most wild tackle. The only bad thing Zidane did was that headbutt, but that doesn't disqualify the entire French effort. The fact of the matter is that France was dominating the game from the second half and onwards, so they deserved the win.

As for Brasil, they may have had the most talented players, but was certainly not the most talented TEAM this time. They were a huge dissapointment, and played mediocre most matches.

It still doesn't justify the action but it might shed light onto why it happened.

Following this fairly average World Cup, new FIFA rankings have been released, with the USA now in a more accurate 16th, although rather bizzarely, they've overtaken Mexico.

Never mind, they'll reclaim their rightful place in the top 5 in no time at all, no doubt hammering Belize 5-0 and putting three past Bermuda along the way. ;)

1 Brazil
2 Italy
3 Argentina
4 France
5 England
6 Netherlands
7 Spain
8 Portugal
9 Germany
10 Czech Republic
11 Nigeria
12 Cameroon
13 Switzerland
14 Uruguay
15 Ukraine
16 USA
17 Denmark
18 Mexico
19 Paraguay
20 Côte d'Ivoire

Australia are 33rd, for those of you who care, behind footballing powerhouses like Colombia and Guinea.

Ah, insanity still prevails.

I feel like Materazzi couldn't have said anything terribly offensive or racist otherwise Zidane would have argued his position and tried to get Materazzi back in trouble.

Zidane said he told him to stop pulling his shirt, and that if he [Materazzi] really wanted it, he'd be happy to trade at the end of the game. After that, Materazzi said something involving Zidane's mother and/or sister, but Zidane didn't say the details of what was said exactly. He added that he had to listen to it once, twice, and that at the third time, he got sick of it, because he could only take so much verbal abuse. That's when he hit him.
About the headbutt, Zidane said he wanted to apologize to kids and mothers, and that it was unexcusable/unforgivable, and that it should be sanctioned. However, he added that what he did was a response to a provocation, and that the one who provoked it should be sanctioned aswell.

Isn't Zidane's mom very ill? That might have set him off.

Slowly but surely, things are falling into place. Still a terribly stupid move, but it looks less like Zidane just went nuts on his own.

Also, I second Klinsmann for coach of the US.

Take care all.

Sorry people, Klinsmann wont be taking any jobs. The only reason he quit, stated by himself, is because he's out of energy from 2 very packt years and needs time with his family. He specifically stated that he had no intention on coaching the USA, or any other team.

But anyway, it wasnt only Klinsmann doing the work. He was unusual in the amount of work he let his colleagues do (which is actually rightfully their work, but a lot of coaches take unecessary actions into their own hands while others are just bystanders). For example Joachim Löw, the assistant coach, had a VERY big role in the German team, as did other people.

With this in mind, im confident the German team will continue and improve their new sporting philosophy, seeing as most of the people who worked with the in this world cup will be in 2010 (which, btw, might NOT afterall be held in South Africa due to technology problems. It MIGHT be assigned to another country).

Given that it's nothing to do with the World Cup and that it will be ongoing for two years, I'd say you're better off just making a thread for the matches when they come up if you think that people will be interested in them.

Zih-dahn is how both the footballer and the FFIX character are SUPPOSED to be pronounced.

Eww... back
Zi-dain sounds VERY americanised, at least some people TRY to adopt the original language's sounds l0l. Zi-daine sounds like youve got something stuck in your throat, or have turned into some sort of pig/crow, or man-bear-pig. Zi-dahn sounds classy. ^^ :D

Anyway. Oh yeah, I know this isnt World Cup news, but seeing as how Italy won the world cup, its interesting to know that the following Italian football clubs have been given verdicts:

CLUB PUNISHMENTS

Juventus:
Relegated to Serie B
30-point deduction for next season
Stripped of 2005 and 2006 titles
Out of 2006-07 Champions League
Five-year ban for ex-general manager Luciano Moggi
Five-year ban for ex-chief executive Antonio Giraudo

AC Milan:
Deducted 15 points next season
Out of 2006-07 Champions League
One-year ban for vice-president Adriano Galliani
Club official Leonardo Meani banned for three years and six months

Fiorentina:
Relegated to Serie B
12-point deduction next season
Out of 2006-07 Champions League
President Andrea Della Valle banned for three years and six months
Four-year ban for honorary president Diego Della Valle

Lazio:
Relegated to Serie B
Out of 2006-07 Uefa Cup
7-point deduction next season
Three-year ban for president Claudio Lotito

Zi-Dahn sounds so fucking stupid. 'Dane' is not pronounced Dahn. Danish people are not called Dahn-ish. Dane = Dane, or Dain.

Anyway, Juve got screwed pretty bad. Fair enough on the league drop and removal from Europe but -30 points as well is shocking. Oh well, I suppose they get what they deserved.
