Well, it looks like Yahoo really jumped the gun this time, or maybe football really is consuming all of our lives...

Regardless, fantasy football is back! I figured I would take the lead in creating this year's rendition of the famed EoFFFFL, which enjoyed an unprecedented level of competition last year. We can only hope to duplicate that energy again, but I think it won't be too hard.

I've set up the initial draft date on Saturday, August 27, which is approximately a week and a half before the start of the 2006 season. With any luck, we'll be able to set an agreeable date soon and be able to rest on our laurels until it's time to jump in.

nobody should care about football until at least july, but alas. I'll sign up of course. Late August would be best for a draft for me since I probably won't have consistent internet access until then.

let's make sure m4tt knows about the league. And I'd rather do 12 team than 14 team.

Strider
06-02-2006, 09:36 PM
Yeah, Idunno how to get ahold of that guy, so I'll leave that to you.

Also, hard to beat a Saturday in late August for a draft date, am I right?

EDIT: I'm "Fascist Footballers", for anyone in the league.

Yeah, I apologize last EOFFFF season; I was way to busy with other and I left the whole gang high and dry. I'm not going to enter in this year, because I still think I'm going to be busy like hell, especially juggling a job and school, but perhaps the next year over, I'll think about joining again.

But good luck to everyone who participates. :)

A Saturday in late august would be bad for me. Just telling you right now. Races and stuff.

But eh, I've only made one half of a draft out of three years of this so it's not like it's that big of a deal.

Raistlin
06-03-2006, 01:21 AM
I'm in!

I was thinking about being the Pirates, with my city being the city of my favorite team. Hence, for basketball, I was the Phoenix Pirates. I was planning on being the Pittsburgh Pirates for football. Which sounded like a really good name for like 10 minutes.

So yeah, back to The Wizards, because I'm only capable of coming up with one new name every month. I may change it later if brilliance strikes me (doubt it).

Can we hide the id for now please? I want to make sure I can be confident that everybody who joins will be competitive. The demand for football is high enough that it's possible it would fill up before a lot of the regulars get to see this thread. It's only fair that people who have played and done well in the past should get the first crack at signups.

Which is why I seriously suggest (if there's more than one league worth of interest, obviously) two leagues, one for veterans to this, and one for not-so-veterans, with a couple of people in both to keep watch on it all. But that's only practical if you start getting to 20+ people interested, unless the second league's a bit small.

12 would be preferable to 14, I think, per league.

Okay, I hate to double post, but if we want to try and stick with 12 teams, well... it's probably not going to happen.

We already have 11 people signed up: Proto, CD, Matt, Cap'n, eest, RSL, Aexoden, Spiff, Raistlin, Red Pill and myself. I know Del Murder and Spuuky are definitely going to sign up eventually, and we'll have to track down Nabeshinji as well. Beyond that, someone is going to have to commish a second league if we keep getting demand.

4 is a 4ce to be reckoned with.

I think we have a good set. 14 has worked ok the last two years so I think I'm cool with that. I'm willing to set up another league if more people want to play.

CloudDragon

If you are in the first league please don't join this one until everyone who wanted to play gets a shot.

If enough people join this one I think I'll just draft a crappy team on purpose and just act as an observer. But if there isn't a lot of demand and a lot of the regulars end up joining it's on baby!

To change it up from the first league I made this one points based and also included a few extra positions. Like individual defensive players!

It's been done. New draft time is 11 AM PST/2 PM EST.

Also, I was gonna have my deputy commish (my sister) pick teams out of a hat to determine the draft order about 5-7 days prior to the draft. That's how I've done it in the past... yea or nay?

RSL
08-04-2006, 02:29 AM
ahahahahahahaha I can't belive this. I finally get a draft on a Sunday, and now it's when I'm going to have a visitor over. I doubt I'll want to be on the computer while she is here.

Del Murder

Autodraft did good for you in baseball.

RSL
08-04-2006, 03:03 AM
I feel kind of bad for ignoring baseball. I should've known this would've happened.

Also, yeah, autodraft is okay. I would probably draft a worse team in reality. I would just like the team to be my very own.

Maybe I'll make the draft anyway. It depends on what's going on that day.

Also, RSL, why not draft along with her? Does she know anything about football? Maybe she'd help or see something that none of us will. Plus, it could test out your trust levels! Do you trust her enough to let her make your 5th round selection, or maybe higher or lower?

Strider

Sometimes, it's the outsider's perspective that makes all the difference in the world.

Also, I could take the measure of turning the drawing into an NBA Lottery type deal, where the worst teams from last year (Spiff, Aexo and RSL, in this case) get the best shots at the top pick. For the guys that didn't participate last year - Red Pill, Proto and m4tt - I could put their odds right in the middle of the pack. Would anyone be opposed to this?

EDIT: Just so you know what I mean, the odds of snagging the top pick from best to worst:

Spiff, Aexoden, RSL, Raistlin, Strider, eestlinc, Red Pill, Proto, m4tt, Spuuky, Del Murder, Nabeshinji, CloudDragon, The Captain

I'll post this over in the league, too.

The Captain
08-04-2006, 09:54 PM
I'm on the fence about the lottery idea since fantasy sports can be so up in the air anyway. Still, having the least odds would just about guarantee my streak of never having the top pick and the pressure of using it wisely would continue.

Middle of the pack in a draft is an ideal spot to be in my opinion anyway. Especially if you know what you're looking for. Consistency at all positions versus one truly great position and several weaker positions has worked for me in the past and probably, will be the strategy I follow this time. Or will I change it up? Maybe I should consult the lady friends in my life for advice.

Take care all.

Del Murder
08-04-2006, 10:05 PM
No lottery, but I do think who ever picked first last year should not be able to pick first this year. Same goes for the last pick.

Lottery doesn't work because people are always coming and going.

RSL
08-04-2006, 11:39 PM
I hope she's a Lions fan...

She lives in Michigan, and originally PMed me because I had a Lions sig. Yeah, she's a Lions fan! I have someone to cry to now...

I don't like the lottery thing, even though it benefits me, because it's punishing someone for doing well. If we kept some players or something, then it would make total sense.

Either way, I'm not going to complain about where my draft pick ends up being.

eestlinc
08-05-2006, 04:07 AM
i was going to be opposed to the lottery until i realized how much my team sucked last year.

Doomie
08-06-2006, 12:11 AM
Is it auto-draft like the NHL, or to we pick players. Because I MIGHT be working.

P.S. Time to go for the all Giants team.

EDIT: If you do the lottery thingie, don't forget to include me in the list. I think it's obvious who I am.

Del Murder
08-06-2006, 01:12 AM
You can set your rankings and Yahoo will autodraft your team for you if you can't be around. There won't be any lottery for the second league.

CloudDragon
08-08-2006, 09:46 AM
I vote no lottery.

Del did bring up a good point about first and last picks. I'm not sure how you could resolve that one, though.

Strider
08-08-2006, 10:02 AM
Well, this would affect CD and Nabeshinji since those are the two returning teams that had the highest picks last year. What I could do:

Split the drawing into two parts, teams and draft slots. Let's say, for a simple example, I pick Nabeshinji and 1. That'd give him the first pick, but since he had it last year, I would put it back into the piles. If I happen to draw it a second time, then it would be official. Would that be fair enough?

This would basically affect four teams: Nabeshinji, CD, Del Murder and RSL.

Del Murder
08-09-2006, 02:16 AM
Yes, if they get the first pick draw twice then they are just destined to pick first forever.

Nabeshinji
08-09-2006, 07:34 PM
With respect to draft order, I'll be happy no matter where I pick. Del drafted 14th last year and still managed to beat me like always.

Del Murder
08-09-2006, 11:01 PM
Honestly, if you're a good manager, and with the zigzag pattern that the order goes by round, it shouldn't matter much where your position lies. The exception would probably be if you had like a top 3 pick or something, since there is a big dropoff from the NFL Elite to the rest of the top players. But picking in the same spot over and over gets boring because you keep using the same strategy.

I chose about 50 picks myself. If all my picks have been taken before then end of the draft, it goes automatically by the highest rated player?

CloudDragon
08-15-2006, 05:20 AM
Yeah chief I'm pretty sure. Remember you can exclude players from your list as well as add them to your rankings. So let's say we hear that Clinton Portis, who suffered a dislocated shoulder injury in the preseason game against the Bengals on Sunday night, would be out for a considerable amount of time, it be worth it to add him on your exclude list so it doesn't automatically pick him up. Now you can make a gamble and draft him anywhere for hope that his injury won't hinder him or keep him out that long.

Yes. If you don't show up for the draft, a team will be drafted for you, based on the player rankings and your team needs. (By this I mean, if by some reason every time your pick comes up, the highest ranked player on the board is a wide receiver, it won't draft 10 wide receivers for you and leave you screwed.)

The auto draft does a pretty good job. You can help it along by ranking the players yourself, or selecting players you absolutely do not want it to draft no matter what. Depending on how much time you spend on it, you could conceivably set it up to draft your team the way you would have were you there, anyway.

I beat you out for second place in fantasy baseball, so hopefully I can ride that "victory" as well as my current 2-game win streak. I'll likely be starting Maroney over Bush.

I picked up Gradkowski off waivers, so I should be ok, assuming he plays better against the Giants than Bledsoe and Romo did. I also put in a waiver claim for Pennington, but we know how that ended up. ;)
