This might help

http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy/. I think photoshop has a tool for removing backgrounds.

the romoving background tool is called magic eraser but pay attention to the same color as it erase the same colored background, so it might erase some of the render (the part of the image you want).
hope that helps.

A free alternative is The Gimp.

Follow the install instructions on the website. It's a really powerful image editing program and would be perfect for what you're doing :)

You've come to the right place.
Instead of free form, get the sprite's background color and Paint's background color to be the same. In most cases just white or one of those god-awful eyestinging default colors. Then, go to the select (box) tool and make sure the setting is the bottom one, not the top one.

And another few pointers, use real English instead of 1337 or fractured english. Use good backgrounds instead of two color dull backgrounds. And when resizing sprites, use the Stretch/Skew command (Ctrl+W), use the Stretch commmand, input the same values into both length and width and use multiples of 100 so the sprite comes out clean. And that's about it.
