It's a PC gaming application that allows you to play games and talk to people at the same time (providing they also have Xfire). It isn't as feature-laden as MSN messenger, but it does have advantages such as 'screenshots' and lots of different skins to use.

I used to use it in the good old days, when I used to play Couter Strike: Condition Zero! They have their own chat program up and running again now, so I just use that.

I liked X-Fire because it kept a record of how long you've played each game which I thought was pretty neat personally...*points at self* Geek...:p
