View Full Version : Disappointments
Name some games that you were excited for but ended up disappointed by. Please, explain what you expected from the game and what made you disappointed.
Marvel Nemesis: Rise Of The Imperfects
An all Marvel hero brawler sounded cool, a great idea and being a comic nerd I was excited, and the fact it was penned by a professional comic book writer I thought the story would be good. Alas, the levels were uninspired, the graphics were bland, the physics engine was ridiculous, the story was uninteresting, the fighters were all similar, characters with ranged attacks (i.e. Venom) made it impossible to win as a close-quarters brawler (i.e. Wolverine), and the Imperfects were like other Marvel chracters (Johnny Ohm = Electro). I was highly disappointed and wasn't entertained by it at all.
Final Fantasy VIII
When I bought this, I was already a FF fan, I had IX, VII, and X and loved them all. So I expected a great experience from VIII. However, my hopes were quickly dashed away by the horrible Junction system. This itself was enough to kill the game for me, though I continued forth in the game hoping for improvement, sadly, that didn't happen. The story was so poor, and the characters generally blew. The story and gameplay are the two biggest things to me and they both sucked, so this game was just almost intolerable for me to play.
Halo
I had heard so much hype about this first person shooter, I figured it'd be phenomenal. Not the case, the level design was repititious, one level had about 4 of the same looking hallways and rooms. The A.I. was unintelligent, the story didn't keep me interested, and it was overall too easy (unless you play on Legendary and in some cases Heroic), it just wasn't fun for me. There was little enemy variety as well, mostly just some elites and a pack of grunts all the time usually carrying the same weapons. I suppose the hype helped kill it for me as well.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
A similar case to Halo, I heard so many good things about it and it looked great and people would talk about it. The idea of the game and the free roaming looked great as well. Unfortunately for me, the gunplay was poor, the camera blows, the graphics were ugly, the story was idiotic and not in the least bit entertaining, it all felt so old after a while.
Shining Tears
I'm a big fan of Shining Force, so when I heard a new "Shining" installment was being made I was ecstatic. Was I sated by this game? No, no, and no. It's the worst RPG I've ever played. The enemy A.I. is retarded and the ally A.I. is even worse. The story sucks as well and the gameplay is painful. So horribly disappointed. Guess I'll still have to stick to my good ol' Shinig Force: Legacy of the Great Intention and Shining Force II.
Kingdom Hearts: Chain Of Memories
I loved Kingdom Hearts, so I expected this sequel to be of fairly high quality. Wrong I was, the gameplay was fine enough but it wasn't all that great really. The story wasn't interesting and you just kind of just went and repeated KH1 with some new filler in between worlds. So I still liked this game, I just didn't like it as much as I had hoped I would, not even close really.
Kingdom Hearts II
Now, don't get me wrong. I do love Kingdom Hearts II. I really do. It's just I had such high hopes for it but in the end enjoyed Kingdom Hearts much more. Kingdom Hearts II had such awful story pacing, it was too easy, they dragged the middle of the game out for too long and it still ended up being too short, and the original was just better. KHII had better combat, camera and gummi ship but KH had better voice acting and actors, better story, better Coliseum, a better opening level that didn't get dragged out and become tiresome, and it had better looking weapons (especially keyblades). I love KHII, it's a fantastic game, it's just a notch or two below what my expectations were.
Final Fantasy X-2
I just expected this game not to suck, but it did. It sucked. Sucked hard.

The only one I can really recall at the moment is Magna Carta. I caused such a fuss in getting this game and after 7 hours of gameplay, the story is begining to annoy the hell outta me. Its the same thing over and over, main love interest gets kidnapped cause shes a klutz, hero saves her, she gets kidnapped again, go get her, over and over!

Rise of Legends
I loved Rise of Nations and I was waiting all year for this game to come out. The choice of civilizations looked mint, as did the rad-dolls that flew about the map. But when I got the demo, I found out to my dismay that it was slow, boring, tedious, and not really all that brutal (when you compared it to Dawn of War or BFME2 anyway).
Escape from Monkey Island
Why did they make it? What was the bleeding point? It was awful, and was a complete waste of time next to the other Monkey Island games, which were champions of humour, logic, and intelligence. All this was was a stupid money maker.

Final Fantasy X-2
I too thought that it wouldnt suck so much. I tried to make myself believe it would be awesome. But nope. I was wrong. Very wrong. So wrong that I almost threw it out my window once. But my big brother stopped me and reminded me i spent 15 dollars on that piece of crap.

Silent Hill 4.
It was just... bleh. It didn't feel like a Silent Hill game at all, and understandably so. It was originally supposed to be a comletely different game, but the boys at Konami said "Hey you know what would make a bunch of money...?"
Yeah.

Final Fantasy VII.
I was told it would be the best Final Fantasy. Not the worst. I might have enjoyed it if it were only hyped half as much.
Kingdom Hearts.
Similar problem to Final Fantasy VII, with a god-awful camera thrown in.
Baten Kaitos.
It wasn't a bad game, but it was too slow-paced.
Majoras Mask.
Another not-bad game, but not spectacular.
Shadow the Hedgehog.
I actually liked the Adventure games, but Shadow's game was garbage.
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.
Ubisoft Montreal employee: "Hay guyz! Let's take a critically acclaimed adventure game, take away it's charms, and replace them with excessive violence, sexual innuendo galore, and all kinds of wonderful, game-breaking glitches!"
Other employees: "I like boobz n' blud!"

Bushido Blade 2, Jak 2, Vagrant Story, Alundra 2, Tourist Trophy, RE4.
Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects
...What!? This game, its pretty good, but as you go on it starts to
suck, really really bad. I mean the game would obviously get you
eager to play because-
1) Badass name
2) Marvel...duh.
Don't buy it! Too short too weak.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time & Warrior Within
Well they are both too short, and kind of weird with horrible camera
angles and yeah. Maybe just not as good as I expected.
Final Fantasy 8
They should have changed the name from 'Final Fantasy 8', to 'Boot Camp.'
Final Fantasy 10-2
Self-explanatory
Dragon Warrior(Quest) 8
This game is all good at the beggining, but once you go farther to the actual training.
Before that I'll get to the even sucky parts, like when you get your ship, FTW!? Where the hell do they expect you to find something like you've been sailing all your life. The only clues are the cardinal directions and the name of the town. I searched and searched but...and then theres the worst part of every Dragon Warrior/Quest game, the training. Of all my Dragon Warrior game beating, this game is pathetic it uses training to cover for the short game time. This game has too much training and I've played the games (and trained in them.) when they were still 'Dragon Warrior'. cripples

I actually really like Sands of Time, which is why Warrior Within was even more dissappointing to me.

Drakengard:
I was told this game was mindblowingly awesome. It wasn't. It was repetitive and the story didn't interest me whatsoever. That, and the dragon levels are nothing compared to Panzer Dragoon!
Project: Snowblind
I didn't play past the second level because I was so bored with it. Deus Ex > Project: Snowblind in every way shape and form.
FFVII
Over hype killed the game.
Resident Evil 3
I didn't like this one for some reason :\

Junction system= Easily the worst battle system I've ever had to use.
I was also disappointed by FFX-2 (VERY VERY Disappointed), KH: CoM, slightly by Jade Empire (Mostly for how short it was), and Suikoden IV.

Man, lots of FF VIII hating in this thread, I personally loved the Junction system (and the whole game for that matter), but I can see why some would hate it.
For me, Kingdom Hearts II was a bit of a let-down. I was expecting a big improvement over KH I, instead it wasnt nearly as good as the original. The battle system was better and more fun, but was mostly all button mashing. The enviornments were way smaller than the original, and no area, it seems, directly leads into another. Frankly, the story just didn't interest me nearly as much as the first, and the fact you revisited all these worlds, only for about 2 hrs a piece, just didn't give it the spark of the original. Good game? Yeah. Dissapointment? Definetly.
Venom

Final Fantasy X-2:...What can I say about this game that hasnt already been said.
Tekken 4: Not a particulary bad game, infact Lee came back which was great. But due to Jin not having the same style from Tekken 3 and the fact that the sound effects for punches and stuff sucked it made me sad.

I hated the junction system but I didn't mind the story. Some of it made me mad but I loved the world and ti was a fun game for me, LOTS of side quests compared to FFVII (which was my first)

I'll agree with this. Although I played less than you did. ;P I could still tell it was bad. I had been looking forward to it from a really long time too. :( The only thing I liked was how beautiful it is, and the battle system was all right. I'll try to give it another chance later, but I need to get over my disappointment first.
FFIX was also a huge disappointment for me. I had insisted on not playing it for years, because I wasnt interested, and then suddenly one day I WAS so I bought it. But it turned out to be not to my liking. There was only a few characters I liked, man.
Oh, The Bouncer too. And I wasn't even expecting very much from that game.

I prefer FFVIII to FFVII, why? because it's a better game. I'm sorry but VII was overhyped. I also find far more memorable quotes from VIII.
KH:CoM, another hated in this thread, I enjoyed a lot. I thought it was very creative and I didn't play it for the story. This is prolly the only game I have ever played and it wasn't for the story.
What was I dissapointed with? Star Fox Assault for 1. The mission/story mode was far too easy and way too short.

Metroid Prime 2 was a slight dissapointment to me. I didn't like how it strayed from the regular metroid style. But I still liked the game. However, a huge dissapointment was Saga Frontier. That game was awful. And my brother spent all my allowance on it. :mad2:

Most things on the GameCube. Except SSBM, that exceeded expectations. And Resident Evil 4.

Final Fantasy IX. I was expecting something at least half as amazing as VII and VIII. I did not get it.

Advance Wars 1, and 3
I like TBS, and my asian TBS buddy raved for hours about it. And it was so bad, it was ghey (h for emphasis). AW2:BHR fixed my problems. 3 Fucked it up again by adding teams, super tag makes it possible to one turn capture, taking anyt and all challenge out.
Megaman X8
Just, no. If I can beat a boss without moving, somethings wrong

Final Fantasy X-2
I know I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but I did judge this game's cover. I thought (by the look of the cover) that this was going to be not so good. And it turns out I was wrong. It wasn't just not so good it was that with a pile of garbage on top.
Fable
I was so excited. I thought this was going to be a groundbreaking rpg. And although I did have fun playing it I found it pretty repetitive after a while. The game was way to easy and the storyline was flawed. They also could have put in more character interaction.
Spider-man (the movie...the game)
This looked excellent on the xbox. I loved the movie so I thought the game would be pretty cool. I guess I haven't learned that most game movies suck.
Grand Theft Auto 3
Many people told me this was a fantastic game. Although it was original and much better in graphics than GTA 1 or 2. It wasn't that great at all. A character that doesn't talk? WTF.
Final Fantasy 8
I knew very little about what rpg even meant when I saw this game. So I was excited to see something like this. It looked futuristic and cool. I soon began to hate it when I realized all it was about was random love between characters that don't even know eachother.
OddWorld: Munch's Oddysee
Looked great (ofcourse it was on the xbox). I liked the characters and the setting. And I liked the other OddWorld's as well, but this seemed to be lacking slighltly for me. They could have created more enemies to spice it up a bit. It wasn't that bad just not what I anticipated.
Kingdom Hearts:
Characters cool. Storyline confusing. Setting amazing. Music alright. The only thing I wasn't antipating is that fact the controls were so horrid. It frustrated me to no end. Definanelty not what I expected from a Square game.
Resident Evil 2
Too easy. I expected the puzzles too be challenging like the ones in RE 1. But nothing was really challenging here at all. On all different modes the game could have been better. The only good thing about it...William.
Some I forgot.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The first new one for this generation consoles. I was pretty excited about the game. Some of my fondest childhood memories were playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game and The Manhatten Project with my little brother, so a new installment made me pretty excited. Oh, but I should've known, the fact it was based off the current animated series made it nearly inevitable that it'd be a cheap money-maker sponging off children without using any effort. It was boring, easy, bland, and the characters incessant catch phrases would make my ears bleed. Made me sad.
Megaman Legends II
I loved the first Legends title, so when playing this I expected an equally magical experience. Well not bad, it just wasn't nearly as fun as the original.
Magic Pengel: The Quest For Color
I was excited over this game back when it was Color Quest, I expected a wonderful monster creation system, battle system, and story. No, my friends, no. The art system was still great, but you had to draw 3D creatures in 2D, so things didn't always come out the way you wanted them too, the battle system was an awful rock-paper-scissors system, and the story was bad and short (beat it on my second day).
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
I loved Sands Of Time. It was a beautiful masterpiece. Warrior Within however, was irritating. It had out of place metal music and just felt awful and wrong. The combat still got tedious after a while, the story was dumb and the love interest was ridiculous, it was over-the-top dark, which made it feel stupid. Sands Of Time is vastly superior.

Devil May Cry 2: Sucked because of the crappy story and too small levels. Also Dantes personality wasn't as cocky as it was in the first one.

I hate HALO. In my opinion, it is by far the worst game ever created by man. That game so overrated, it recieved "Game of the Year". It has a crappy storyline and game play. How typical is it that you have to kill aliens to save mankind or something that - basically is just a 'run and gun' game with a poor storyline to try and back it up. I was very dissapointed in this game, I was expecting a descent storyline.
Sorry to ruin your spirit HALO fans, but HALO is WAY overrated.

I was thinking about making a thread like this. Good job, saved me the trouble xD <3
Anyway. My list.
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age
I actually got to go to EA (thanks to Cid and EoFF! <3) and play this game in it's early stages, as well as give feedback. I was just amazed by the game at that stage. It was such a wonderful idea and everything they had so far was gold. So innovative! When EA sent me my advanced copy I was overjoyed and started playing immediatly and I was hooked... but the game soon got bad. My first disappointment came after Moria. I remember all through Moria being super excited that I'd soon get to Lothlorien... and then I left Moria and was transported all the way to Rohan. No in between. I was crushed. Then it got worse. There proved to be very limited NPC dialogue, and no time to just 'explore'. Always stuck in battle scenarios, never just usual RPG in-town time. When I couldnt enter any of the houses in Rohan, I was beginning to get pissed. THEN my game froze after a battle. Outright froze and wouldnt fix. I soon learned that the game was full of bugs and I was just horribly disappointed and pissed. Damn you, EA! You make me sad ;_;. Thanks for the free hotel tho <3
Final Fantasy IX
Let me say that I despised VIII. But I managed to play through it and have a fairly enjoyable time, despite the crappy characters. But IX... it just didnt catch me. It wasnt that the game was flawed, I just didnt get into it. I couldnt make myself continue, hard as I tried. It was quite a let down. I felt like the magic of FF was gone for me (thanks, X, for fixing that).
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
Yeah hey, crappy battle system? You make my life teh sux.
That's all I can think of offhand. I'm sure there's more to come.

Final Fantasy XI - Horrid Level-Grinding, it's an MMOG stuck in the dark ages. Add to that the fact that you can't even choose which server you go on means you're dropped into the deep end with no one to join you. And world passes? PLEASE!
Grand Theft Auto (all of them) - As long as I can remember people have been praising these games into the stratosphere. Well I've got news for you all - they're no where near as good as you think. Perhaps the most awful of the series is San Andreas. I'm not a huge fan of the whole Hip Hop culture, but having to watch even a second of it was like having my spleen removed. By a monkey with a spatula. Without anasthetic.
KOTOR2 - Now I did like this game, but compared to the first it was a real let down. The less said about the last part of the game the better.
Fable - Again a game I enjoyed, but expected a whole lot more from.

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly

Final Fantasy X-2- What a flamin piece of crap that game was. Yuna as Britney Spears, who were they targeting with that?
Resident Evil 4 - Everyone said it was the best thing since sliced bread, I thought it was eh.
Shadow Hearts : From the new World - I am such a fan of the first three games, and this game really let me down. I still like it but the series has lost the interesting dark edge to it in favor of the most fucked up things they can think off and just being odd.
Arc the Lad : End of Darkness - The series is fantastic, and moves smoothly to the ps2, but this game just blew donkey balls. Even more tedious then 3 which I didn't think was possible.
Dragon Quest VIII - A game that has a lot of potential from a reliable series and just loses it all in another boring typical story with great characters they never bother to develop.
The Xenosaga series - Now don't get me wrong I still enjoy the series, I don't even mind the long cutscenes, just comparing it in any way with Xenogears is an insult which the series is a prequel of. The second game was a dissapointment compared with the first too.
Katmari Damacy - What am I missing about this game, that so many people raved about. Are you required to be stoned to find any sort of enjoyment from this game, rolling around a ball picking up stuff, neato.
The Wild Arms series - Played all three, not sure why, they all have basically the exact same story.
Kingdom Hearts II - This is an affectionate dissapointment, cause I still enjoy a lot of this game. All of the Sora, roxas, namine, rika, organization story I enjoyed, the disney felt very chorish to me, and you had to do them twice, and with key voice actors not reprising the roles, that part really dragged the game down for me.

Shadow of the Colossus - This game had the worst controls and camera ive ever seen. At one point it took me like 40 minutes to find a colossus. Those were the boringest 40 minutes of my life and i sold the game soon after.
God of War - Can we say over hyped? There were like 2 boss battles and 5 different enemies in the whole game. Not to mention it was nothing other than a button masher...
FF X2 - Enough has been said about this turd.
Silent Hill 4 - It didnt have that special 'something' which makes you want to keep playing. I HATED HATED HATED the whole half of the game with your ugly, slow, crippled female friend.

Devil May Cry 1:
My oppinions are completely bias and all... but it sucked compared to DMC2 (I had played that first)... the battles werent that... awed out as I expected them to be.

Congratulations, you are the first person I've ever heard of who 1) liked DMC2 to any degree and 2) who didn't like DMC1.
As for me, I was disappointed with Star Fox Assault. I had watched it's development closely, and I knew that the game was going to suck but I was still hoping that it might be cool...and it wasn't. Damn you Namco! Starfox 64 is one of my favorite games of all time, so the announcement of a new and improved Starfox game excited me in ways you can only dream of. Nintendo technically didn't do any wrong, since they gave the rights to make the game to the Ace Combat team. If anyone could make a good Starfox, it would be them. They know what they're doing, right? Well, unfortunately, no they don't. Apparently Namco thought that the game that everyone likes because you fly a spaceship would be a lot better if it didn't have all those spaceships in it. Namco, you...I'll get you one of these days.
DMC2 was incredibly disappointing. I also watched the development of it very closely, and I was really looking forward to it. All the videos and reviews and previews I had read about it made it look ridiculously good, but the final product was terrible. You could literally stand still and hold down the fire button and shoot things and you'd win. It was ridiculous. Not to mention that you would go from fighting demon tanks in a ruined city, to a European village, to a burning offshore oil platform, with absolutely no explanation as to why you were in all these different places or what you were doing there. Dante went from being a cocky badass to acting like Two Face from Batman. Factor in a forgetable main villian (some guy who looked the Chinese guy from Virtua Fighter, except he wore a white suit), some girl who turned into a bird or something, some random old lady, the fact that swords were entirely useless, the fact that the enemies' AI was completely broken, horrible level and boss design, and most insultingly of all, the fact that the final boss was just a mini-version of all the bosses up to that point AND the fact that this game didn't really have a story and that it didn't connect to DMC1 in any way...and you have a horribly disappointing experience.
To be fair though, I really like the way Dante looked in DMC2. But that's about all it had going for it. DMC3 does everything that DMC2 does, but better. My only complaint is that it's hard, which is another disappointment, but not that big of one.
I was really disappointed with Xenosaga. I hated Xenogears, but I was willing to give Saga a shot. And unfortunately, I liked it. I liked it even though it was a horribly, horribly designed game. I never had fun while I was playing it, not even for a second, but I kept going back. It really disappoints me that I did, because WOW that game was terrible.
Knights of the Old Republic disappointed me a little bit. I love that game, so much so that I played through it twice to get the different ending. And upon doing so, I discovered that the two endings are both really boring. But overall that game was fantastic.
SaGa Frontier 2 was disappointing at first, but then I grew to love it so forget it. And fighting games in general were disappointing to me because I used to WANT to play them but I'm generally speaking bad at them. I had to practice really hard to get as good as I am now, which still isn't THAT great, but I do alright. I'm disappointed that I don't have enough patience for MMOs anymore. I guess that's enough for now.

I neglected to mention everything by rare besides Star Fox 64 and Perfect Dark.
Rare didn't make Starfox 64. They did however make Starfox Adventures for the Cube, and as of yet, the words to adequately express my utter hatred of this game don't exist in the english language.
I have to agree with you on Rare though, except that I also love Goldeneye. Everything else they've made has been average at best though as far as I'm concerned, and got progressively worse towards the end of their relationship with Nintendo. A lot of people made a big fuss about them being bought by Microsoft, but I just said good riddance.
Super Mario Sunshine: Basically Mario 64 with fewer levels, less variety in those levels, and some of the most frustrating hidden mini-game type levels I've ever seen. Not to mention the long jump is better than the hover nozzle. It was basically Mario 64 if they scaled back everything that made it fun for more than an hour. Next gen my tuckus.
Zelda: Wind Waker: Pretty much the same deal here. Fewer levels, although those levels have more variety than Mario Sunshine. The lack of an overworld to explore and all the sailing however got on my nerves. They essentially cut one of the best aspects of Zelda and replaced it with the most annoying thing possible. Let's not forget finding the triforce pieces either. Note to Nintendo; having to sail all over the world searching for stupid maps, spending ungodly amounts of rupees translating them, and then searching all over the world again for triforce pieces lost on the bottom of the ocean isn't fun. Fetch quests are generally annoying by their nature, but this earns the title of worst fetch quest ever. I'm still holding out hope for Twilight Princess, but if Nintendo manages to screw that up then I may just lose all faith in them.

People make too big a deal out of the Triforce quest. It's one part of the game. It doesn't make the rest of the game any less amazing.
And I absolutely loved the "secret" stages in Super Mario Sunshine. They were like classic mario stages, in 3D! :D I'd buy a game made exclusively of those stages.

I agree with you here, though I started on Halo 2, and yes, for all of the hype, Halo 1 and 2 are not that great.
Beyond Good and Evil
When Ron Gilbert, creator of Monkey Island (he's actually renowned of being very critical of games in general) said this game kept him interested through-out, I knew I needed to buy this soon. I got it for the great price of 15$ secondhand. Here I was, all ready for a great story and gameplay (didn't really care about graphics, I was waiting for a good game, not a good-looking game) and I sat down, played a bit, and, though somewhat pleased with the game, I was expecting something far better in terms of story and gameplay.

Don't get me wrong, I still loved the rest of the game, but that little quest was long and boring enough that I almost stopped playing the game right there. I did suffer through for the ending, but to be honest I doubt I'd ever do it again. When I really do hate it that much, I'd have a hard time not holding it against it. Quests like that are just lazy game design meant to artificially lengthen a game. They could have easily given us another dungeon or two instead, and that would have been infinitely preferable.
My main beef with the game has always been that when you get right down to it, there's less to do than in previous instalments. Considering it was a next gen Zelda title, I think we should have been getting more dungeons and places to explore, not less.

There may have been fewer dungeons, but they were longer than previous dungeons, and there's a hell of a lot more to do in the overworld. Pretty much every single one of the islands has at least one thing to do in it.

FF9 - I stopped playing it before I even passing Lindblum for the first time. I hated the battle and leveling up. I couldn't level up. It was too hard to get to new levels. It was taking me forever. I hated it. Plus the Medieval thing just didn't do it for me - seemed way too cheesy.

There were 2 dungeons being worked on, but Nintendo for one reason or another had to release the game before they could be finished. Notice how you get the bombs and the third jewel for free.
