FF1 - N/A as there's no real main character
FF2 - The three main characters are all orphans
FF3 - The Onion Kids are orphans, lol!
FF4 - The Great Light's still alive, I don't remember who Cecil's mom is
FF5 - Butz is an orphan :(
FF6 - Terra's an orphan, too.
FF7 - Cloud's mom might still be alive... dunno about his dad
FF8 - Living father, dead mom
FF9 - Hell if I know.
FF10 - Haven't played

FF9: Even though Baku functioned as a father figure to Zidane, I guess you could consider him to be an orphan. If you look aside Garland, and you don't consider him to be his father -- he is an orphan.

This isn't so much a trend in FF characters as it is Square abusing the cheapest way to add 'depth' to a protagonist.

Ramza's mother had died, but he was raised by his father, and his father really didn't die until he was near the age of adulthood. To a degree, I think that somewhat puts Ramza out of the line of being considered an orphan, as he was still raised by one of his real parents until adulthood.

That being said, in FFT, Delita was an orphan, as he and his sister had basically been adopted and looked after for by Ramza's family.

It gives you a sense of handicap for the main characters. They all have some kind of trouble to deal with in their life besides the plot, so it makes them seem tougher and stronger. Besides... What kind of kid with loving parents would go on an adventure? I'd sit home and have some burgers every once in awhile. Throw a BBQ.
