hmm.. haven't played ffviii in quite a while, so i'm not really sure which part exactly are you talking about, but from the way you describe it, sounds like mayhe there's something wrong with the disc? not too sure, though. let's hear what others have to say... hope you'll be able to fix it, though. =)

Get some rubbing alcahol and a cotton ball. Rub the alcahol all over the back of your disk with the cotton ball, and then wipe it off with a clean, soft rag. This usually fixes all of my broken CD's. Failing that you should buy another copy.

Someone once told me to put toothpaste on the scratch of a cd then even it out completely, then white it all off except for the part where it fills the scratch. I don't remember if it worked. I have a feeling it didn't. My bro did it for me anyway, because that was YEARS ago.
I always had troubles like that with PC version. Otherwise... I don't know. Yeah, just try to find a new copy. You can try that toothpaste trick just for kicks.

Ooh...If tht's the case, then I think I've got another way as well. Well, make tht my sister's way. She told me tht if you put a little bit of lotion on the scratch, and slowly rub it off [probably with a cloth?], the scratch will disappear. BUT, I never tried it, so I don't really know if it'll work.. =)
