I have never read anywhere that height was a factor in being Aryan. It is always, Blue eyes(check), white skinned(check) and Blond hair(check). Cloud fits them all.

The whole FF7 being racist is nothing compared to some other games ( MGS Snake Eater has a big blond German guy bent on world war for one of the main bad guys). The game wouldent be the same with out Barret or any other of the charicters missing or changed around so that they dont seem racist to some people.

Its an ignorance. Like many whites who aren't around other races in America Square in Japan don't see many non-Asian people so their perception would be shaped by the media. With the case of Barret. Black people are what they see on T.V. so thats how they make the character. A friend of mine who went to Japan told me your're looked at as exotic because in all truth most foreigners probaly think of white people when they see Americans. Look at Dragonball. Adjudant Black was the leader of the Red Ribbon Army (after he shot General Red) and he was really dark with big lips minstrel style. Mr. PoPo too.

What I find interesting is that when I first played FF7 I was young enough that I never in a thousand years would've contemplated this. It was just a funny man who swore a lot and...just happened to be black. If the first thing that stood out to you was that "Oh Lordy, it's a black guy!!!" then perhaps there's something wrong with you.

What I find to be slightly racist, if not just stupid, is this attitude "Yeah, but the Japanese have probably never heard of being black before, so they'll assume that they're all like Fiddy Cent". Japanese people might have a strange pop culture, but they aren't stupid.

Besides, your missing my entire point. That point being that there are way wores racism/steriotypeing in the world than in FF7. The whole thing in about the cold war did not evan play a part in the main idea of the peice, or the discusion for that matter, so why bring it up? And, now that it is brought up, dose it change the fact that is still a blond Russian bent on provoking the Cold War? Oh my. How is this entire topic about racism when somebody stereotyped black people. It wasn't racist. It was stereotype. She said black people do it....not gangsters, or thugs,or some crap. Technically, Barret isn't even a stereotype. He is what he is. Stereotyping is when you make assumptions about other people based on what someone else does.

So, if you saw a black person walking down the street and make the assumption that he must have a gun arm, then you are stereotyping based on the Barret's character. Barret is not a stereotype, however, he may fall into the stereotype that you already have in your head about what a black person is or how they act.

Oh and by the way. If you looked at Barret's character and said "Oh he's a stereotypically black man", that my friends, is being racist.

From this comment I can guess that you probaly don't live around or know many black people and take everything you know from media with black people and stereotype it to all. How about I say all middle eastern people have trouble speaking english, whites are proper talking rich happy go lucky people, or that all asians talk in short detached statements. I'm pretty sure everybody in the race doesn't sound like that. Saying the n word isn't racists depending on the context in which you use the word, let me explain.

1. Nigger is the racists spelling of the word.

2. If I'm looking at someone acting stupid or ignorant one might say he or she is acting like a nigga as in stop acting ignorant especially in the wrong place (such as a place of business or in someones home).

3. Many blacks do use the word as a pronoun as in "That nigga". This is not racists, because well, for the most part see my anology below.Many older black people and some younger don't like younger generations using the word.

4. Many blacks don't like it when people of other races use the word an anology of why is let's say you have a family you hate it when your people in your do and acts like such and such so you might say some things about them but if anyone else says anything negative about the family you get offended. That happens with this volaitile word because of its past misuse. If you are black its like you are apart of the family like I said in my analogy so you use the word to say certain things but you wouldn't like other people to say the same thing.

5. Personally I don't care if someone of anothr race says the word as long as they don't mean it in an offensive context.

Lastly Duncan, Barret is a stereotype because he is a character based on the cliched viewpoint of how blacks are potrayed in the media. Thinking this does not make me racists. Its like if you see someone with glasses as a character and he's really smart. Thats a stereotype that appears in most movies. If you wear glasses you have to be somewhat nerdy and smart.
