I don't get it

I've been reading thru these forums a bit, and i still don't get it

Why does most people hate Rinoa that much? I found it one of the best characters around, followed by Squall and Selphie (they were my all-times party). She had a pretty great personallity, very well modelled (you have to assume she was cute, gotta love how they made her eyes get a little more closed then normal), and after all, she was the second most important character in the plot.

I haven't finished the game yet, though im at the last dungeon (God, if there's one thing i hate on FF8 is the stupid overwhelming ammount of common monsters in dungeons and in the world map... Makes me get annoyed, specially when im all anxious over some part of the story).

Other than that, im new here, so hello everyone. FFVIII its my favorite out of the FF games i played (VII, VIII, IX blargh , X and X-2). Kinda happy to find out a community that still posts around...

I thought Rinoa was horribly annoying. Along with almost every other character in the entire game.

Just stick Enc-None on somebody and that will elimate all random encounters. You'll be able to get through Ultimecia's Castle much more quickly then. You still have to fight her Guardians, but they aren't any trouble.


I like Rinoa. I didn't find anything about her to be negative. Her and Squall make a good pair.

Secondly, I didnt think Rinoa was annoying. I mean, she was just trying to get to be like the others in SeeD even though she didnt really get it. She, Squall and Zell are my most reliable characters. I thought the pairing was cute too. I think she makes up for the non-socialbleness (not a word I know) that is in Squall.
And yea she is pretty key to the plot :)

See i never liked aeris as a character coz she was too pure but there is something about Rinoa which I like. i think she is just really persistent (sp?) so she is a nice character to have around. i just think people like aeris and selphie were a little fake whereas Rinoa seemed real.

well she is a seventeen year old girl. rinoas one of my favourite characters on the game and they seem to have done her personality well and her and squalls romance make FF8 really good. and shes also one of the best characters in battle if you use her limit breaks right. she act slightly immature but thats not really a bad thing. rinoa is a good character and most of the hate seems unjustified.

my best part is squall, rinoa and zell (ive played throught the game using all of the character and ive found tis one is among the best if not the best.)its usually good to keep couples together as well E.G. in FF7 i nearly always keep cloud amd tifa in the same group.

people seem to look through all of her other good points and only focus on her slight annoyingness and make her seem loads more annoying than she actually is.

There was someone reviewing this game, saying that s/he felt nothing for the Squall/Rinoa relationship. His/her view did not change and he felt nothing as s/he was finishing the game and watching the ending FMV. Then, the reviewer said, the segment with Selphie's video camera came up. The reviewer then stated, "then I cried." Was it someone on here that said that? I found myself feeling the same way, and I've actually been searching around, trying to find that comment again.

I liked Rinoa, she was a very realistic character. She's young and idealistic, yet its her lack of experience that causes her to be so upbeat and positive. And despite being an overly optimistic character, she hurts too, and she has her share of pain.

her role with squall also plays into FFVIII's theme of the cyclical nature of existence, considering what happened with their parents, which i'm not going to spoil it for anybody.

Rinoa's Limit Breaks (well, just the one, Wishing Star) potentially do the most damage alongside Squall and Zell. Add the invincibility and you've got a bit of a winner there. Selphie's Limit Break is a bit unreliable, all of Quistis' only hit once, and Irvine's is all subject to availability.

All this despite her needing to be rescued seven frickin' times:

1) GeroGero assaults her and she cowers away
2) I don't personally count this as a rescue, but needing Squall to hide her somewhere after the Owls' base is destroyed...
3) Iguions! Quistis and Caraway told her not to get involved dammit!
3.5) Busting her out of the Iron Clad. This never happens with me though.
4) Falls down the side of the Garden during the Galbadia battle... Why didn't they just dangle Quisty's whip?
5) Has to be carried to Doc. Odine after falling into her coma and dragged into space, only to...
6) Get LOST in space
7) Then get busted outta the Sorceress Memorial

I like Rinoa a lot more now that I've seen her 'Angel Wing Trick' with the Meteor magic. Each Meteor hit was doing over 6000 to a Meltdown'd Ruby Dragon! Angel Wing is second only to Lion Heart!

IMO these sorts of "why don't people like {character}?" threads come up because those with a minority viewpoint tend to be more vociferous. That's why you'll tend to see more "{character} sucks!" threads than "let's all tell about how much we love {character}!!!" ones.

My guess is that the majority of FFVIII fans like Rinoa, and most of those also like the Rinoa-Squall relationship, since it was a primary plot point for the second half of the game.

I really like Rinoa's character--I think all of the party characters are fairly well-conceived--but I'm actually not hot on the Rinoa-Squall relationship...

Rinoa is like a ninth-grader with her little games to get Squall's attention, the "let's wear the same rings!" thing (I'm sure many have done that in RL...around ages 10-15), her high-school fundraider-type approach to political resistance (meaning that you can come up with a good plan to sell cookies at the football game, but that doesn't mean you can run a bakery), and the fact that with the responsibility of life and death of those he cared about, and of course the world at large, Rinoa could occaisionally be quite demanding of Squall's attention. Some people need to let loose because they are wound up over silly circumstances. But Squall had the responsibility of saving a world that had basically turned to him (as the leader of the group, I mean) to solve its problems. That is a tremendous burden--not just Squall being emo--and in that situation you let the man be until the job is done IMO.

I've also noticed that Rinoa seems to have the highest base stats, especially in the magic department, and that's before she becomes a sorceress on the third disc; I used to think she got a permanent boost.

Naw shut up. Rinoa is great. I like how she's willing to put up with Squall's attitude because I'm like Squall and I would love to meet a patient girl like Rinoa :D And what was wrong with saving her? It's only part of the story...It's not like it's in the gameplay like resident evil 4 or something where you have to protect her or the game is over...you're not racing against time or anything. She just has exceptionally bad luck is all lol.
