View Full Version : Subjob question+ help
I have just coompleted the subjob mission.
I am lvl 18 RDM, what is the best subjob to go with that?
I was thinking WHM or BLM, what are the good and bad points of both, I dont want to choose one then decide later that I wanted the other one.
Also, I need ways of making gil fast, lol I know theres no quick way, what I want to know is, are crystals the fastest way or is crafting worth taking up, does it actually pay? do the items you make actually sell in the AH. And is there a website or something with recipies so I know what to buy/collect.
And can someone tell me what beastman seasls are for, i have like 30+, can't sell through AH, but my linkshell keep telling me to save them, why?

The best subjob for a rdm early on is whm. You can cure status effects like poison which is invaluable, and you get divine seal and curaga. Later on, you'll want blm as an alternate sub. Whm is the best mage sub for every mage that's not a whm main early on, and often forever. It's not till mid to high levels that Rdm/Blm and Blm/Rdm become viable combos. Low level Rdm/Blms and Blm/Rdms fall into the same boat as level 3 Warrior/Ninjas - the mantra "what works at 75 doesn't necessarily work at low levels". You'll certainly see this, but know that your whm sub is much more beneficial early on. By the time blm is a beneficial sub you'll be experienced enough to know why.

You will eventually need both, but WHM will be the most useful early on.

Early in the game I personally don't think it's worth it to specifically level a craft though there are some early recipes that make good money. If you have some items as drops that will make something within a skill up range in a craft then they might be worth crafting. Some of the best ways to make crafting early on would be:
1) Make Bronze Ingots. You can buy or farm fire crystals and then buy Copper and Tin ore from the NPC. Make the ingots and then sell them on the AH. Higher level crafters won't bother because they can't HQ them and will buy them up for themselves. On my server it's about 7k/stack profit to make them if you bought the crystals.
2) Sheep Leather/Wool. If you farm for yourself in Konschtat and bring the materials to make either this can be big money early on. In the process of farming these you might run into Stray Mary and get a Mary's Horn which sells for about 600k on my server.
At the top of this forum is a list of site references, many of which have a list of all recipes.
If you want to be able to make money easily I'd highly suggest making a mule or two. Anything that you get as a drop in XP should be sent to your mules and you should wait until you get stacks of things and sell them on the AH. If you never throw away the drops you get in XP you will probably be able to keep up with spells and other things without putting in much effort.

Beastman Seals will let you do special fights later with small groups that can drop lots of expensive things that can make you quite a bit of money.
Thanks Yeargdribble, very helpful stuff.
When you say farm what do you mean? lol maybe be a stupid question but i'm new so I got to be allowed one or two.

To farm is to kill a spesific monster/monsters for the sole purpose of gettings a one or more of their drops, you usually solo when doing so, so it has to be weak monsters. You often have to kill a ton of them to get enough of a spesific item.
Thanks, thought it would be something like that.
One more thing, ok so I will be picking whm as my subjob.
so I am level 18 rdm and level 1 whm, will whm level up faster untill it reaches half of that of my first job?
If not is it wiser to level up whm as my fiirst job untill it reaches level 9?

I'm not sure I completely understand what you are saying so I'll try to just cover it all.
All jobs must be leveled individually. This means that for you to have your WHM sub you will have to switch it to your main job and leveled it from 1 up (eventually to 37) so that it can be a fully leveled sub for your RDM at 75.
Yes, thats what I meant or its anwsered my question anyway.
it works like this for example:
I'm level 18 RDM & level 1 WHM
when i'm level 20 RDM I will still be Level 1 WHM
To level my subjob (WHM) I need to select it as my main job.

I don't quite understand what you meant by "Will it level up faster", but you must level you're White Mage seperately from your Red Mage, SubJobs do not gain EXP whilst you have them set as you're SubJob.
SubJobs can be no higher than half of your main Job. If your White Mage is higher than half of you're Red Mage when you set it as a SubJob it will be reduced to a level that is exactly half of your main Job. If your White Mage is lower the half the level of your main, the level of your White Mage Remains the same while set as a SubJob.
It's a very good idea to keep up to date with the leveling of your SubJob because if you don't then you are what is known as a "Gimp", and from my experience some party members don't take too lightly to a fellow gimped member, So keep your SubJob up to date!

That's correct. But if you level WHM to more than half of your RDM, WHM will be capped to half of RDM if you put WHM as a sub for RDM. However, you will not lose those levels. You'll continue where you left off once you switch back to WHM.
-edit-
Posted while Scottnumbers did.
Well i'm no gimp lol, to say you didn't understand me you answered well.
So now I need gil and to level up my whm, so farming for crytals sounds good.
Thankyou all for the help.

A good strategy to minimize backtracking is to level your main job to 18 and get the subjob quest. Then you level your subjob to 37 in one go, since 37/18 is a capped subjob. Then you're set to level your main from 18-75 w/o interruption. Don't do what I did and level jobs piecemeal. It clutters your inventory with lots of extra gear, or you find yourself selling and rebuying equipment much more than necessary.

Nothing to worry about at these levels, but at 75 you'll eventually want/need ninja to 37(which would require 18 war as well) for the benefit of soloing, which RDM is very, very good at. RDM has alot of subs they need to level, one of the bad things about them in my opinion :P

You'll only need NIN sub for soloing but for endgame activities you'll need to level your DRK sub as well.
Well my plan for now is to level whm to 10, then rdm to 20, so I can get a chocobo and an airship pass, i want to explore abit first, go to Jeuno, Bastok and windhurst.

Hmmm... Sounds like a good idea for getting your choco. Getting up to Rank 5 will require some higher level help though. Also, don't dare waste the money to buy an airship pass.

No, don't do that :p. Rank 5 can be done rather easily anyway, with some higher level help. I don't remember too well, but I don't think you need more than level 30 and some slightly stronger friends to get there ;o.

A fast way to get money is to farm crawlers in west sarutabaruta (the noob area in Windrust) u get silk threads that sell from anywhere from 5k to 90 k per stak usually its around 40 k its a good thing also cuz theres an nm there that drops an expensive cape (200k) it is soloable around 20 i soloed it at lvl 21 rdm. You said you were going to explore, so when u go to windrust dont forget to farm the crawlers.
:D GO TARUS GO :D
Thanks, I will make windhurst my first stop, I need gil the most at the moment, I'm in need of new scrolls and armour, im still in level 9 stuff mostly.

I am also a rdm so i would know wer u could buy some scrolls there is a magic shop in windrust waters with usefull en spells(enhancing) and there is a good place to buy some other spells in port windrust another way to get money is to fish for moat carp on the bridges in windrust woods(a stack is about 7k) if u cant find any of these just post again and ill explain again. Also some people sell things really cheap like npcs and in bazaars u can buy them and sell at the AH for more.
O ya and you will see a lot of short and cute Tarus:D
